Conservatives vs. liberals

On one hand, you can expect blue states, or liberals, to spend more money on evenings out, vacations and entertainment. The states also spend more on electronics and books. Conservatives, or the red states, will invest 40 percent more on home improvements than the blue states might.

Billeo CEO Murali Subbarao said to DailyFinance:

"Based on the numbers we saw, consumers who live in red states are homebodies -- spending more money on things they can do around the house: home improvement, toys and video games to play at home. While consumers who live in blue states spend more on things that take them away from home and get them out and about, [like] travel and vacations, movies and event tickets."

How did you get there?

Billeo described its methodology to arrive at its findings:

"We looked at how much on average users spent on online bill pay and shopping purchases, which cities had the highest average bill pay and shopping annual spend, and what red and blue state users were shopping for."

All the Online bill paying

Red states settle payments more often than blue states do.

Subbarao explained:

"There are multiple factors at play here, but the largest seems to be that consumers that live in red states may be more comfortable with online banking and bill paying, and therefore are more likely to pay bills online."

The typical amount a user spends in Chandler, Arizona for on the internet bills is $16,448 annually, making it the highest place for online bills. Even $11,400 per customer is paid by Tacoma, Washington, which is the largest online bill-paying city for a blue state. The average red state consumer will spend $7,480 a year on bills while the blue state consumers spend $7,070, according to Billeo's inforgraphic .

People in the red states do more things from home, the difference shows.

Find out about Online shopping

The report implies that liberal’s trust and use technology and the internet more often though since blue states spend more on shopping on the internet usually. About $944 a year is spent on online purchases in blue states while $911 is spent in red states, which is not a huge difference.

According to Subbarao:

"Blue states seem more comfortable shopping online for higher priced items online."
