TrackIR setup instructions

Recommended Posts

Homeboy,

Good chance you will, yes. As you see in my article, I had problems with a window directly behind me and solved it with a low cost pull-down shade. There are four other windows in that room (one right beside the one with the shade). It gets very bright in that room, especially in the summer time but only that one window causes a problem. Therefore, though TIR is quite sensitive to light, it seems to only be sensitive to light directly in its field of view. Pretty easy problem to solve I think.

Judging from your situation I have no window behind me only one to the right and another to the left against the same wall as the computer so there may not be a problem but the fix is simple nonetheless.

Thanks

Homeboy,

Here's the problem : the blue LED light ONLY comes on if I click on the 'mouse emulation 'icon on desktop.then it goes out . I have followed your TR4 guide to the letter & many thanks for such a detailed explanation of this 'box of tricks ' which so far has been totally idle & unresponsive ! I read somewhere that if the blue light does not show then TR4 will not be active !... too true!

I'm using the Saitek Aviator joystick & have the 3 TR4 keystrokes programmed in. The graphics card :Nvidia 8800Ultra ( 768 mbs) configured as per the faq's + 2GBS of RAM + 2.4GHZcpu. Maybe you can get me out of this hole ?

Thanks anyway , John Lay

The blue light indicates that the game is recognizing the TIR device. If the blue light never comes on then it is not and obviously the thing won't work. The only think I can think to tell you is to try unplugging TIR (without being in the game), wait a few seconds and plug it back in then start the game and see if it finds it. I found with TIR4 that it was necessary to do that once in a while. I assume it works properly from the TIR interface? You see the three "greens" from the camera view? Does the orange light come on when you turn TIR off using the appropriate hot key while in the game?

Sorry I don't have more thoughts right now.

If you are running Windows 7, make sure that both TrackIr and OFF .exe files are set to run as administrator. Else the blue light don't come on. BTDT.

Good Morning Homeboy and Others,

A couple of things I have noticed about the TrackIR 5 software:

1. As far as I can tell, the smoothing rate is not stored in the profile. (It is there in the TrackIR4 profile.) This means that the Smoothing rate has to be set each time the TrackIR 5 software is openned if you want to change the smoothing between profiles. Unsure, but likely.

2. I am unsure about the overall Speed slider either. Of course, this can be just multiplied within the profile as it is saved, but I do not think this happens.

3. Why, oh why, do TrackIR not have a "multiplier" for the graphs as well as, or instead of the curve up/down buttons. That way, if you want to tame down ONE axis, then you just multiply it by 0.8, say, rather than having to manually edit the profile in Notepad, or re-plot each point.

4. I have discovered you can add manually extra graph "points" in the profile file for the Track IR 5 version of the software. This increases the resolution of the graphs around the "dead zone".

Otherwise the TrackIR 5 software appears quite sensible, and I especially like the "first person" view grids to get the profiles right. And if you have a TrackIR 4 profile you like, TrackIR5 translates it easily across.

Regards,

George.

Homeboy and other TrackIR (new) users,

I have a couple of suggestions regarding setup which might help setting up:

I think I have worked TrackIR out so it works for me. It only took about 12 hours of mucking around !!

1. I do not use the Track Clip Pro (the LED frame on a stalk on the headphones) any more. Instead I just use the Track Clip Vanilla on the cap. "Why?" might you ask (or perhaps you might not).

  • The NON-Pro version allows more reliable and greater movement of my head. With the Pro version, I found that in extreme head positions, or if my headsets sit differently on my nonce, then the bottom two LED images interfere with one another and I get a "no tracking" error - everything just stops.
  • The placement of the Clip (non-pro) with respect to the sensor is much more reliable than the wobbly fitting on wobbly headsets on my wobbly head. My Sennheiser headsets do not have a "normal" position on my skull, (and the Track Clip Pro wriggles on the headset band if knocked) so the whole of that setup is physically much less reliable than just using a cap. By having a reliable position on my nonce, I do not have to check the position of the LED's on the Track Clip Pro on the software each time I use it.
  • In my room I get no infrared reflections off anything, even with sunlight being filtered through a light curtain directly behind my sensor. In fact, I get more a reflection artefact with the Track Clip Pro.

2. The "Limit" function on the Pitch axis works (as promised) at 180 degrees. However, looking straight up is 90 degrees, so to work around that I reduced the pitch axis sensitivity a LOT once my head reached 90 degrees. This means I get "lost" while looking up a lot less than before. I then did the same thing with the Pitch axis so that, yes I could over-rotate my head to about 110 degrees, but only very, very slowly, so that I did not get lost checking my six.

3. And just for fun, in an Albatross, if you sit high/sort of stand up in your cockpit, you can see over the top wing and get a better view of the enemy instead of looking dumbly at your top wing, so I have the Y axis set quite high. Suddenly, flying an aeroplane is a very active thing, nearly standing up as you are flying while trying to keep an eye on the enemy, and then plopping down into your seat to check between the wings. LOTS of fun.

4. And, just finally, I have a little bit of Roll still active (unlike Homeboy's guide) as it means you can look around the engine a bit more normally when taking off and landing.

All of this has worked with my setup. And I am not getting sick any more. I think it is the trick in 2. which helped me.

My current OFF profile is attached. Of course, it is still a work in progress.

Regards,

George.

P.S. Has anybody else noticed that in OFF, with padlock ON, the X,Y, and Z axes still work! I quite enjoy that effect too.

Great information in this thread. Thanks Homeboy for the detailed information and George for the TrackIR5 info and profile. I will try the profile tonight.

This is actually the first time I will be tweaking TrackIR profiles and software. It has actually worked well the last few months just using the standard out of the box settings. But, I am sure tweaking the settings will increase it's effectiveness.

Since I help a lot of people with their TrackIR4 devices, I have been developing this document that details all the elements of setup.

Thought it might be helpful to share it here.

Hope you find it useful.

I nearly went mad trying to get my TrackIr setup to work last night. It worked perfectly fine the previous time, but all I could get was a view of the ground underneath the aircraft when in OFF. The tracking in TrackIR seemed to work ok.

After just about throwing the whole lot out of the window I switched off Skype and everything worked fine. So now I know. Skype and OFF don't mix. :this:

Make sure you use latest TrackiR software and update game support and skype latest maybe.

I have a TrackiR 3 (thanks Winder :good:) and am using version 4 software - I don't think the v5 software will work. The Skype is latest version. OS is W7 64.

It's not a problem to not have Skype working when I am using OFF but I just have to remember to switch it off before starting TrackiR and OFF

Now I am back to not getting Trackir to work at all.  I feel like throwing the whole lot out of the window.  Sometimes I get a blue led, and even then it dont work.  Most annoying.  There must be some way of getting this thing to work with WOFF every time.  Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

Now with WOFF I never get a blue led.  And TrackIR doesn't work at all.  Any ideas anyone.  I am getting a bit pissed off because apart from buying WOFF itself I have also bought 4Gb of memory and an expensive graphics card.  Helluva waste of money so far.

Jim, WOFF only recognises TrackIR 5 software (the latest version). I have TrackIR 3 as well and the latest 5 software works fine for me. Indeed, WOFF seems far better than OFF in this regard.

Yes, my TrackIR 3 with version 5 software is still working ok.  The only problem is that no matter what I do it starts up when the computer is booted anew, even when that option is not ticked.   Just a bit of a pain to have to wait for it to start up properly and then close it down.

And if I try to close it before it is running properly it hangs the machine and I have to reboot again by switching off the power.
