Recommended Posts

First known picture of upgraded Indian AF MiG-29B. It has been upgraded upto SMT standards with that big fat dorsal spine.

Earlier Serial No : KB3301.

New serial no. after upgrade : KBU3301.

Upgrades include new RD-33 series 3 engines, A2A refuelling probe, true multi-role capability, new ejection seat, central digital computer, Zhuk-ME radar, helmet-mounted targeting system and upgraded navigation and radio systems.

The IAF MiG-21bis too underwent a change in serial numbers after being upgraded to Bison standards. MiG-21bis had CXXXX series serial numbers, the MiG-21 Bison had CUXXXX series serial numbers.

Nope thats the new desert scheme. Usefull in Woodland and Desert aswell. The point of view matters ;)

The MF Mig`s could be updated as well. I know that`s more complex process but possible.

That is one big hump.

Yeah, no joke. I think it's even larger than the standard Russian-built SMT spine.

What is really evident in this pic, is the lack of visibility the pilot has. His head is just above the canopy rails.

Yes, in the Fulcrum you sit "in" the plane while the F-16 you feel like you sit "on" it.

Yes they do. All IAF aircraft now have a dull grey scheme. The retrofitted spine and some other parts have the yellow primer painted on it.

These upgraded MiG-29s( 3 squadrons) would have( and will undergo) undergone airframe strengthening to make it serve in the IAF for another 10-15 years. It would be interesting too see how they upgrade those old MiG-29UBs.

I thought the MiG-35 was the competitor in that with the Zhuk-AE - Oh whatever the above is then - probably just some useless figures on a pretty pink piece of paper!!

Perhaps they made 2 submissions originally, and later pulled the 35/AE as not yet mature enough.

What i have heared is, that the indian side was not satisfied with the ability of the russians to fullfill the timetable of arms sales. Various programs had serious time delays. The MiG-21UPG (BISON) was years behind the scedule, the carrier for India (ex Baka ex Goshkov)is delayed for more then 2 years, the delivery of T-90S tanks .... and and and.

I was wondering what language the cockpit controls are in? Are all Indian planes done in the same language, or do they vary?

English. The HAL built MiGs & Sukhois had/have english letterings. The early MiG-21s, I believe, had russian letterings in the cockpit.
