Found a really cheesy Chinese video about aerial combat over China circa 1937-1941.  It makes a John Wayne movie seem tastefully restrained, but - for the most part - has first rate aircraft mockups and computer animations.  Lots of fun over a couple of beers.

As a Chinese, we never forget the help of American pilots and Soviet pilots. 

In my hometown, a US pilot's monument, he drove a P-40 fighter to intercept Japanese bombers,after shot down a Japanese plane, he was hit, in order to prevent the plane crashed in the city, he was late parachuting. Although the people quickly found him, and try to rescue him, but he unfortunately died.

Now, every year, our local secondary schools organize students to visit the monument to commemorate his outstanding contribution and sacrifices for the Chinese people's war of resistance against Japan.

The Chinese people will never forget every foreign friend who sacrificed to support the Chinese people's anti-fascist war.

Those are Northrop 2EC attack bombers, one of the first variants of the revolutionary Northrop Gamma.

 

The last shot is a 2EC bought by the RAF for evaluation.

I am back modding after some Real World interruptions - I'm upgrading my old China war models (see below) and also thinking about making a small map for the aerial campaign over the Shanghai - Nanjing region.  Because of the language barrier, I am having trouble finding accurate 1937-38 maps of that region.  Would you be willing to assist me?

i have 2 maps of the Shanghai region (east and west), dated 1954, but based on Japanese 1942 data, and some earlier surveys dating to 1917.

They're yours if you want 'em.

I can't find any of my other maps, that I used for the WW2 China terrain remod. But I'll keep searching the archives.

Yes!  I would very much like to "borrow" your maps.  The only detailed maps I've been able to find are modern, so they show too many roads and too much habitation.

Thanks.  This aerial campaign was my first mod interest when I discovered First Eagles back in 2006/7.  I have always loved the subject matter - high adventure and aerial combat with sophisticated biplanes.  Chennault was involved from the very beginning of the campaign as an advisor, and eventually resulted in the American Volunteer Group, popularly known as the Flying Tigers.

The American pilot I mentioned above is the pilot of the Flying Tigers, whose name is Robert H. Moni, a lieutenant.

This is a memorial to my hometown to commemorate his contribution to the Chinese people:

 

Lieutenant Moni came from Kansas, north of Kansas City, where the people of his hometown built a monument after learning of his deeds:

 

In 1999, Lieutenant Moni's sister, Anna L. Davis, came to my hometown:

 

Now, on April 5 every year,  people will go to the monument to commemorate Moni Lieutenant:

Progress shots of the Curtiss Hawk III.  Its ready to UVW map, then make skin artwork. 

 

Been reading up on CAF aces, and discovered some technical details about the Hawk III.  They were armed with a .30 Browning and a .50 Browning, which gave them very effective firepower by the standards of the mid-1930s.  Also, the Japanese Mitsubishi A5M had superior performance to the standard Hawks, so the CAF stripped bomb racks, drop tank gear, airflow ring, and sliding canopy to improve performance.  That explains why there is so much variation in the old photographs of CAF Hawk III aircraft.
