    TSR2...........The Alternative Story

6 April 1965 was set to be a sad day for the British aircraft industry, the cancellation of the TSR2 was imminent, the costs were spiralling and the project was slipping further backwards, the project had its supportures but its biggest enenmies were those in power.

But, on the morning of the 5th April something nobody saw coming happened, something that if it turned out to be true could save the entire project and thousands of jobs in the UK avation industry, indeed ministers in parliment were astonished to say the least, if the project was killed off now the British public would be furious , questions would be asked and answeres would be demanded, the government had some serious decisions to make, and quickly for the offer was for 24 hours only !

So what had happened ? Well at 9:45 GMT the British Aircraft Corporation were thrown a lifeline, an American company had stepped in with an offer to see the project through, they were willing to finance all that had been spent on the project so far, this would mean that all the British tax payers money was safe, they were willing to pay back to the British government what they had spent on development costs so far.

In return they wanted the British to basically start again with the project financially, they would work with BAC to carry out further development and testing on a 50/50 cost basis , supplying their own expertise as an aid to the programme.

So, essentially the TSR2 project could be saved, from now on the cost would only be half of the projected costs , somebody wanted in on this venture badly, but who and why ?

April 6th was the day the axe was supposed to fall on the TSR2, government ministers shuffled in their seats as the announcement was due to be made, silence fell , the announcement was short. "The TSR2 Project WILL Continue", there were gasps of amazement amid cheers of joy.

Over the next few hours many questions were asked, some answered, some not, but the main one was WHO ??

Enter onto the scene one of the worlds if not the worlds most famous aircraft manufactures,

    Boeing
Yes, Boeing, the company famous for its outstanding range of airliners and bomber aircraft.
Boeing saw the potential of the TSR2 programme and whilst traditionally being a manufacturer of large designs it wanted a smaller tactical bomber/attack aircraft than its previous offerings.
The war in Veitnam was looming and rather than starting from scratch the wise men at the company saw that the combined companies that make up the British Aircraft Corporation had the expertise to pull the project through , they just needed access to more money, money Boeing were willing to commit.
Boeing would not only help financially, they wanted to help solve the current issues and take development further, indeed they wanted to market the project world wide !

The flight testing carried on at quite a pace, problems were found and solved, with there not being as much red tape and politics to go through as previously progress was finally being made.

To get things moving and keep politicions quiet the first batch of the BAC/Boeing Thunderstrike GR1A as it was to be known entered service with the RAF on December 1st 1966 and the RCAF taking its aircraft the following year. Only 100 of this version were produced 60 for the RAF and 40 for the RCAF.

The GR1A was hurried into service so that the BAC/Boeing designers could address some of the types more seroius problems.
From day one the TSR2 had been dogged by the extremely tight fit of its engines, airframes were matched to engines and a single engine removal to take 60+ hours, obviously this could not continue, there was no way the airframe could be widened externally, the only sensible answer was to get rid of the bombay and move the engines slightly closer together, the airframe was strengthened for under fuselage pylons and a fixed 700 gallon tank in its place also doubling up as a heatsink for gearboxes and the like, this was a trade of in all directions but as the original design required a removeable 680 gallon tank in the bombay and an optional 1000 gallon panier tank it was considered the best way forward.

The next issue was with the main gear, right through the testing phase it had proved troublesome and prone to slapping when the first wheel made contact with the runway, numerous fixes had been tried but even now the in service GR1A's were still having issues.
Again Boeing's design team came up with the solution, it was stunningly simple ! They got rid of the tandem swivelling upon retraction complicated system for a more conventual single leg with a pair of wheels attached to it, the same alloys as used on the B52 main gears were used as it was considerably stronger the the British equivalent.

The improvements implemented over time were immense , just about every single part of the aircraft and its systems were changed in someway , only the basic shape of the original TSR2 remained the same.
Even while the original GR1A's were being delivered the next model was starting to enter the production phase, this time the aircraft had gained two 30mm Aden cannon under the nose, the original proposal for a side ways looking radar had been abandoned soon after Boeing got involved [this was now installed into the reconnaisance pod] so the cannons used up the space that had been gained by its removal.

The next design change was probably the most ambitious , Boeing wanted something that was never on the cards for the TSR2 project, they wanted a navalised version , something to compete against the RA-5C Vigilante, the British design team were astounded by this, but Boeing who had several aircraft for evaluation and flight testing had now got their own production line running, with all this extra capacity anything could now be possible !
The modifications to the bombay area and fitting of under fuselage pylons had inherantly strengthened the whole underside of the aircraft, a "full strength" arrestor hook had been installed from day one instead of the original proposal for an "one time" emergency type, the fin was essentially cut in half to make it fold for carrier stowage.
Production of all the navalised versions was to take place at Boeings own plant, initally the US Navy were very reluctant to even trial the idea of a British jet on their carriers, but Boeing's persistance paid off and the Navy placed orders for two versions ; an all out attack variant and a dedicated reconnasiance platform.
For the Marines it was a no brainer, the aircraft was perfect for their "in country" mud moving roll.
It should be noted that all these US aircraft and indeed the Export version that followed all used US built Pratt and Whitney engines, US sourced ECM and countermeasure systems and carried either two Browning 20mm cannon or the 20mm Vulcan "gatling gun"

Export customers for these US built versions included Isreal and Austrailia among others.

Meanwhile back in the UK the RAF versions continued to flourish, changes were generally small and more inline with keeping up with current upgrades to software and such, the biggest problem was with there being so many versions in service at the same time, engines grew ever more powerful even though the design had never been short of power, a dog fighter it was not but down low at high speed nothing came close.
The terrain following radar was a world beater, the ride was stable down low and the wide angle HUD made sure "head down" time was virtually not needed.

South Africa, India, Saudi Arabia and Canada were among the UK spec exports.
Once the Royal Navy accurired its Malta Class carriers it too became users, these carriers and these aircraft being the biggest the Royal Navy had ever operated.
The one thing that did come about from the navalised versions was the fitting of cannards to the nose section , roughly in line with the pilots position. These were fitted to cure a nose down tendancy in certain circumstances when taking off from a carrier, infact several US Navy aircraft were lost and all remaining aircraft were only to be flown by senior pilots with 2000 hours or more.
Two small pitot tubes were positioned in front of each intake to limit the angle of the canard if the airflow became close to intake surge limits.
Pilots reported a general feeling of more stability under weapon launch conditions and the RAF's
GR7 version came with them as standard fitment........if only they had been discovered earlier.

The GR7 was basically the RAF's ultimate Thunderstrike, the original internal ECM fit was very limited in effectiveness and difficult to upgrade so after many years of trying different configurations of US built pods the design team at BAC eventually came up with two purpose built pods which could be installed onto the wingtips replacing the two IRM stations, the pods could be removed in less than one hour making upgrading easier and as a bonus they were more aerodynamic and didnt use up a valuable wing pylon.

The complete number of versions and operators as well as actual combat accounts would be the topic of several volumes, far too much for this brief account of an aircraft which was destined never to be if it was not for a last minute gamble from Boeing.

After a total production run from the two factories of 4500 aircraft I think it is safe to say the gamble paid off.

                                   TSR2_2017

As you've probably already realised the TSR2 is a bit of a favourite of mine,
So.....what's new this time you ask ? More versions, more stuff remapped, more model tweaks, new cockpits and still more to do. Half the fun is seeing if you can find what's changed from the previous releases [if you had them]
This is one aircraft I will probably never stop tweaking so I thought I'd better get what I have so far realeased.
For those of you that already have the older version I can't stress enough that you should move them somewhere safe in case you dont like these.
Just letting them overwrite is NOT a good idea as you will screw up both sets.
Installation is just a case of copying everything FROM the TO_MOD_FOLDER TO your modded game install.
Just remember this is a What If, I'm not really concerned about what would have been feasable and what would'nt, we will never know so I've just gone on what I would like to see.
    Enjoy

  4. SF2_MiG19SK

The MiG-19SK by CAF team, 3d work by Cocas, skins by Nyghtfall, other work by Coupi, testing by Stratos, Coupi, Wrench, Nyghtfall.
    Some Background:
After the success of the Soviet Union’s first carrier ship, the Moskva Class (Projekt 1123, also called „Кондор“/„Kondor“) cruisers in the mid 1960s, the country became more ambitious. This resulted in Project 1153 Orel (Russian: Орёл, Eagle), a planned 1970s-era Soviet program to give the Soviet Navy a true blue water aviation capability. Project Orel would have resulted in a program very similar to the aircraft carriers available to the U.S. Navy. The ship would have been about 75-80,000 tons displacement, with a nuclear power plant and carried about 70 aircraft launched via steam catapults – the first Soviet aircraft carrier that would be able to deploy fixed-wing aircraft.
Beyond this core capability, the Orel carrier was designed with a large offensive capability with the ship mounts including 24 vertical launch tubes for anti-ship cruise missiles. In the USSR it was actually classified as the "large cruiser with aircraft armament".

Anyway, the carrier needed appropriate aircraft, and in order to develop a the aircraft major design bureaus were asked to submit ideas and proposals in 1959. OKB Yakovlev and MiG responded. While Yakovlev concentrated on the Yak-36 VTOL design that could also be deployed aboard of smaller ships without catapult and arrester equipment, Mikoyan-Gurevich looked at navalized variants of existing or projected aircraft.

While land-based fighters went through a remarkable performance improvement during the 60ies, OKB MiG considered a robust aircraft with proven systems and – foremost – two engines to be the best start for the Soviet Union’s first naval fighter. “Learning by doing”, the gathered experience would then be used in a dedicated new design that would be ready in the mid 70ies when Project 1153 was ready for service, too.

Internally designated “I-SK” or “SK-01” (Samolyot Korabelniy = carrier-borne aircraft), the naval fighter was based on the MiG-19 (NATO: Farmer), which had been in production in the USSR since 1954.
Faster and more modern types like the MiG-21 were rejected for a naval conversion because of their poor take-off performance, uncertain aerodynamics in the naval environment and lack of ruggedness. The MiG-19 also offered the benefit of relatively compact dimensions, as well as a structure that would carry the desired two engines.

Several innovations had to be addresses:
    - A new wing for improved low speed handling
    - Improvement of the landing gear and internal structures for carrier operations
    - Development of a wing folding mechanism
    - Integration of arrester hook and catapult launch devices into the structure
    - Protection of structure, engine and equipment from the aggressive naval environment
    - Improvement of the pilot’s field of view for carrier landings
    - Improved avionics, esp. for navigation

Work on the SK-01 started in 1960, and by 1962 a heavily redesigned MiG-19 was ready as a mock-up for inspection and further approval. The “new” aircraft shared the outlines with the land-based MiG-19, but the nose section was completely new and shared a certain similarity to the experimental “Aircraft SN”, a MiG-17 derivative with side air intakes and a solid nose that carried a. Unlike the latter, the cockpit had been moved forward, which offered, together with an enlarged canopy and a short nose, an excellent field of view for the pilot.
On the SK-01 the air intakes with short splitter plates were re-located to the fuselage flanks underneath the cockpit. In order to avoid gun smoke ingestion problems (and the lack of space in the nose for any equipment except for a small SRD-3 Grad gun ranging radar, coupled with an ASP-5N computing gun-sight), the SK-01’s internal armament, a pair of NR-30 cannon, was placed in the wing roots.

The wing itself was another major modification, it featured a reduced sweep of only 33° at ¼ chord angle (compared to the MiG-19’s original 55°). Four wing hardpoints, outside of the landing gear wells, could carry a modest ordnance payload, including rocket and gun pods, unguided missiles, iron bombs and up to four Vympel K-13 AAMs.
Outside of these pylons, the wings featured a folding mechanism that allowed the wing span to be reduced from 10 m to 6.5 m for stowage. The fin remained unchanged, but the stabilizers had a reduced sweep, too.

The single ventral fin of the MiG-19 gave way to a fairing for a massive, semi-retractable arrester hook, flanked by a pair of smaller fins. The landing gear was beefed up, too, with a stronger suspension. Catapult launch from deck was to be realized through expandable cables that were attached onto massive hooks under the fuselage.

The SK-01 received a “thumbs up” in March 1962 and three prototypes, powered by special Sorokin R3M-28 engines, derivatives of the MiG-19's RB-9 that were adapted to the naval environment, were created and tested until 1964, when the type – now designated MiG-SK – went through State Acceptance Trials, including simulated landing tests on an “unsinkalble carrier” dummy, a modified part of the runway at Air Base at the Western coast of the Caspian Sea. Not only flight tests were conducted at Kaspiysk, but also different layouts for landing cables were tested and optimized as well. Furthermore, on a special platform at the coast, an experimental steam catapult went through trials, even though no aircraft starts were made from it – but weights hauled out into the sea.

Anyway, the flight tests and the landing performance on the simulated carrier deck were successful, and while the MiG-SK (the machine differed from the MiG-19 so much that it was not recognized as an official MiG-19 variant) was not an outstanding combat aircraft, rather a technology carrier with field use capabilities.
The MiG-SK’s performance was good enough to earn OKB MiG an initial production run of 20 aircraft, primarily intended for training and development units, since the whole infrastructure and procedures for naval aviation from a carrier had to be developed from scratch. These machines were built at slow pace until 1965 and trials were carried out in the vicinity of the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea.

FROM NOW ON IS MY WORK. STRATOS.

With the reception of the first new carrier in late 1965, the new aircraft began sea trials during the spring of 1966 and for summer the first planes were permanently deployed on board. The ship and it's planes began a cruise around the world doing good will port visits showing the flag and the new capabilities of the Soviet Navy. The carrier was permanently escorted by USN info gathering ships monitoring the capabilities of the new vessel and its air component.
The first real deployment with combat ocured in the Pacific Ocean in 1969, in a dare move, the carrier slipped into the Yellow Sea during the night and launched it's aircraft at first light, the planes strike several military facilities in China mainland, specially around Shangai, and the first A-A combat took place when a pair of SK's engaged intercepting J-6 of the PLAAF while escorting strike armed SK's. All the soviets returned to the carrier that was already steaming to get out of the South China sea trough Tsushima straits.
By early 1972, new models are being introduced into the fleet and the SK's started to show their age in the fast pace of aviation during Cold War, so as soon as the new models completed the air component the SK's were passed to train new naval pilots on the fleet training installations in Crimea, were it served with distinction until the last cells were too worn out to be safely operated beyond 1980.
So the SK's story came to an end with the honor of being the first real combat aircraft onboard soviet carriers, and the plane that first tasted the blood for carrier based pilots.

  7. DH Osprey B.II

De Havilland Osprey B.II by Cocas (what if...) 28/07/2017

Some time ago I requested some updates to the original Osprey by Cocas, a refuelling probe, airbrakes, antenna on the fuselage... cocas made the mod and I made a new skin for strategical use with the RAF in AntiFlash white. As the Osprey B.II does not differ wildly from the I, I retained the original readme and completed with some historical background. As the plane was never used on the desert being based only in UK and Germany, I not included the desert scheme, but the one in the original Osprey will work. For the Malvinas campaign, the green euro cammo should be used.

Model by cocas, new antiflash white skin by Stratos on cocas template, decals by Spinners. Thanks a lot guys!

    Background:

Following the exit of the first version of the new De Havilland bird, the RAF aproached De Havilland with a request for a improved variant with Strategic bombing as its designed mission. The requirements were clear, a better range, a refuelling probe and a long range communication radio.

De Havilland felt it was pretty easy to complete the task, as the requested features were already imagined for the Osprey, and added another one, big air brakes on the wings. the refuelling probe was a bit more complicated, as it was tested first on the starboard wing, but it was hard to use in flying, specially in bad weather conditions, so a reuleing probe over the cockpit was installed and tested. It came with the risk of spilling gas on the cockpit glass, but simplified the refueling maneuvers a lot, so it was finally selected as the choosen one. The new communication array was based on a dorsal antenna and new radio equipment to be controlled by the copilot, as the plane retained the three man crew.

Finally bigger fuel tanks were installed and the new brakes air tested, those brakes improved maneuvers and shortened the landing run quite a bit, and then the prototype was sent to the RAF for testing. Plane was well liked by its crews and the RAf operated 49 of the birs in the nuclear bomber role, both based on UK and in RAf stations in Germany. During the first years the Osprey B.II used the classic Anti Flash white scheme, before converting to a regular cammo scheme as it was seen in the Malvinas campaign before retirement.

On the following pics, we can see a recently delivered Osprey B.II in anti flash white belonging to the squadron flying low over the Mach Loop in Wales, training for low level nuclear attack runs on Warsaw Pact targets.

The is the release of a new "What If..." aircraft by Cocas. This represents the F-4X (VS) variable geometry (or swing wing) Phantom if it had been constructed as a supplimentry aircraft to the F-14 Tomcat, for use on smaller carriers.

The aircraft comes with the following skin/decal sets:
USN Grey 1 (standard Gull Grey/White
USMC Grey 1 (standard Gull Grey/White
USN Lo Viz (TPS grey, semi-subdued markings)
FAA Blue (standard Royal Navy Blue/White)

All markings are decals, and decal randomization is TRUE. Weapons used are all stock 3W items. Skins are in jpg format, and damage textures are DDS.

As all squadron markings, for the USN & USMC are decals, you may choose any Phantom squadron from the "squadron drop down" on the load out screen. Be Advised, however, some of the tail markings WILL fit better than others

From May began air starts counterpart aboard the Tu-4. Total participated in the testing of four aircraft "K", which Amet-Khan, S.Anohin, F.Burtsev, V. Pavlov and P.Kazmin completed 150 flights. With the transition to working out starts on the real target was adjusted guidance and control system "Comet" - an analog of relief after walking on the target, like a combat missile, and only in the final section of the pilot shut off homing, took it over and come back to the airfield. All flights went well, although the pilots consider them extremely difficult. In one such flight analogue Amet-Khan escaped suspension with an inoperative engine that could only run at the water, the other - at Burtsev turning off the autopilot and he hardly overpowering servos, barely able to turn away from the target ship...

  10. Fictional Romanian F-5E

This is my first mod, so excuse the mistakes!
Works in SF1&SF2 if you have the stock Mirage Factory F-5E installed, skins updated after Paulopanz Austrian skins.
The aircraft is a What if... plane, supposedly the USA agreed to the Romanian request to sell F-5E Tiger II to SRR (Socialist Republic of Romania, the official name then) back in 1974-1975.
At the time relations between Soviet Union and Romania were cold, the soviets were suspecting that SSR might jump in the PRC lap or even worse, defect to the USA sphere of influence.
This ”what if” is based on an official Romanian request made in June 1975, after the exposing of the F-5E in the hands of the soviets due to the fall of South Vietnam.
North Vietnam captured more than 50 such aircraft and 4 or 5 were shipped immediately to Soviet Union, the rest were used by VPAF.
This give the arguments to the Romanian delegation to request the aircraft, motivating that the plane is now no longer a secret to the communist world.
In the real life USA said no ...

  19. F-4T Phantom II Air Superiority Fighter - Ghost Grey Phantoms

F-4T Phantom II Air Superiority Fighter 1.0

The F-4T was a late 1970s proposal by McDonnell for a stripped F-4E optimized for the air superiority role. All air-to-ground capability was to be eliminated and associated equipment removed. The armament consisting solely of the built-in M61A1 cannon, the four belly-mounted AIM-7 Sparrow missiles, and the four wing-mounted AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles, or an alternative warload of six AIM-7. A digital computer was to have handled the weapons system.
By the late 1970s, the Phantom was clearly old technology, and no customers ever expressed any interest in the F-4T. The project was abandoned before anything could be built. It was never clear but it was suspected that the proposal had been aimed at a particular potential export customer.

BUT what if the F-4T had entered production, either in foreign service, or to supplement the F-15A, or even as a potential alternative to the F-16A ADF?

And so I give you the F-4T Phantom II Air Superiority Fighter:

    - Base aircraft is the 'F-4E_79 TISEO & ARN-101' from Ravenclaw and co’s awesome F-4E USAF pack.
    - Deleted all air to ground weapons capability.
    - Each inner wing weapon station can carry either 2x AIM-9 or 1x AIM-7 or an ECM pod.
    - Empty weight, empty inertia and stall speed lowered to that of the stripped out Third Wire F-4F. This makes it probably the most maneuverable and best dogfighting F-4 Phantom models, other than the IAF Super Kurnass 2000 prototype.
    - Retained AN/ARN-101 antenna for long range navigation.
    - Retained TISEO for target identification.
    - Higher 'G' HPC center drop tank.
    - Cleaned up the ‘noises’ and shadows on the radar display to better represent the digital filtering of the Digital Scan Converter Group (DSCG) radar display later model F-4E were equipped with.
    - Added Pulse Doppler look-down function to the AN/APG-120 radar, as later model F-4E Phantom’s upgraded with the AN/AWG-10A digital fire control computer had this feature.
    - Changed the gunsight reticle to the green and red colored AN/ASG-26A which was also used on the F-4G Wild Weasel.
    - Ghost Grey Air Superiority camouflage scheme.
    - Changed the fiscal year component of the serial numbers to the late 70's: 77, 78 or 79.

    Included in this mod are:

    - F-4T Phantom II
    - 9 different USAF, ANG and AFRES skins.
    - 7 different USAF, ANG and AFRES squadrons.
    - High resolution Ghost Grey camo F-4E PSD templates
    - F-4T hanger & loading screens

To Install simply un pack and drop into your mods folder.

    - Canopy

  21. F-16XL for SF2 – F-16E Blk 62 Fighting Falcon

    F-16XL for SF2 – F-16E Blk 62 Fighting Falcon 2.1

In March 1981, the USAF announced the Enhanced Tactical Fighter (ETF) program to procure a replacement for the F-111. The program was later renamed the Dual-Role Fighter (DRF) competition. The concept envisioned an aircraft capable of launching deep air interdiction missions without requiring additional support by fighter escort or jamming. General Dynamics submitted the F-16XL, while McDonnell Douglas submitted the F-15E.
As we all know the F-15E was chosen... BUT what if the F-16XL had been chosen instead?
And so I give you the F-16E/F Block 62 Fighting Falcon.
The designation F-16E/F Block 60/62 would have been used had the XL been selected (The F-16E/F Desert Falcon as we know it today wasn't even on the drawing board in the late 80's).

    Included in this mod are:
    - F-16E (XL) Blk 62 Fighting Falcon
    - F-16EM (XL) Blk 62 Fighting Falcon (CUPID mods)
    - F-16EV (XL) Blk 62 Fighting Falcon (AN/APG-83 AESA radar upgrade)
    - 8 different USAF squadrons.

To Install simply un pack and drop into your mods folder.

    Notes:
    - The weapon stations are quite complicated due to the set up on the real aircraft itself and the limitations in SF2 with the maximum amount of hard-points etc. As such it is best to use the default load out from the loadout.ini. That being said if you do want to change it at the loadout screen you need to follow these rules: If the default loadout uses rail launched weapons (Aim-9/120, AGM-65/88) under the inner wings, only change it for another rail launched weapon and vice-versa. This is because the weapon rails are loaded as an EP class weapon that doesn't show up at the loadout screen.
    - The default 'Attack' loadout is designed for the mass anti-armour mission as that is the kind of CAS mission SF2 generates. However in the loadout.ini file under each 'attack' loadout entry is a CAS loadout option with LGB etc.
    - There are a ton of different loadout options in the loadout.ini file so check them out with the single mission editor.
    - Loadouts are based on the F-16C Blk 40/42 but with an F-15E Strike Eagle flavor e.g. AGM-130
    - Shadows are deactivated as 'tractor beams' are an issue as it is an older .lod
    2.1 Changes:
    - Added missing 20mm M61A1 Vulcan (PGU-28) to 'Guns' folder. PGU-28 loads generally don't have tracers.
    2.0 Changes:
    - F-16EV (XL) Blk 62 Fighting Falcon added.
    - Loadout.ini and weapon station fixes.
    - Cockpits changed to Block 42 type with WAR hud as LANTIRN would have been fully integrated on the jet.
    - Ferris test skin added for F-16E (XL) Blk 62 Fighting Falcon.
    - Canopy RCS reducing tinting added as per F-16C/CM Block 40/42.
    - Semi- conformal AIM-120 station position and angles corrected.
    - Internal ECM changed to AN/ALQ-165 Airborne Self-Protection Jammer (ASPJ) as was planned for production aircraft.

Released under the CA fair use agreement.

SF2 DH Osprey B.1 Pack (What If...) 4/15/2016

    = For SF2 (Full-4/5 Merged Reccomended) =

*Note: you =MUST= have, as stated above have, at minimum, a Full-4 merged install, as this mod makes use of many items, most importantly, a (heavily) modified version of the stock F-4B cockpit. Therefore, it's vitally important that your game version has access to this cockpit.*

The is the release of a new "What If..." bomber by Cocas, the DH Osprey B.1 for RAF usage. This is 4 jet engined medium bomber for use in the strike, interdiction and recon roles.
The aircraft comes with 2 skins:

    RAF Euro
    RAF Desert

All markings are decals, and decal randomization is TRUE. Weapons used are all stock 3W items. Skins are in jpg format, and damage textures are DDS. All other parts (pilots, seats) are supplied.

As always, fairly easy to follow, detailed install instructions are included. So, please read them. One can find more fun reading all the Notes section as well!

  23. SF2 Vought TF-8 Crusader Pack (What If...)

    SF2 Vought TF-8 Crusader Pack 4/8/2016

    = For SF2 (Full-4/5 Merged Reccomended) =

*Note: you =MUST= have, as stated above have, at minimum, a Full-4 merged install, as this mod makes use of many items, from several versions of the games. A Full 5 with NA is reccomended. There are many "bits" required, most notably the cockpit referenced is from the A-7E Corsair II.*

This package contains a (somwhat) fictional outgrowth of the Vought F-8 Crusader. In the Real World ™, only ONE TF-8 Crusader was built (it's on display in the Naval Aviation Museum at Pensocla, FL). This assumes that Vought and the Navy chose to expand the production/refurbishment of early model Crusaders into the 2 seat variant seen here. The aircraft has expanded capabilites in both Air-to-Air and Air-to-Ground mission tasking (see Notes for more details on the factory modifications, and squadron decals used.)

This package contains the following skin sets:

    USN, early (Gull Grey/White
    USMC, early (Gull Grey/White
USN, Late (TPS low visibility grey)
    French Navy, early (Gull Grey/White)
French Navy, late (Overall Blue) - both tagged for Flotille 12

The SF2 "date switch" is used for the USN and French Skins. The USMC skin stays in Grey/white for it's service life. All skins are in jpg format. Damage textures are in DDS format.
All markings are decals, and with few exceptions, reference stock 3W Modex and Squadron tail markings. Decal randomization for all skins is TRUE. All weapons used are also stock items (note: the WalleyeIIIER -may- be an SF2NA only weapon; this has not been confirmed)

As always, fairly easy to follow, detailed install instructions are included. So, please read them. Indeed, one would be well served by reading all the Notes section as well.

    MARTINSYDE G102 (D)

    History

Whilst the Great War was raging in Europe, the Balkans, and Mesopotamia, Countries not involved in the conflict, started breaking away from the powers that had previously held dominion over their countries, One of these countries was part of the joint occupation by Britain and France since the days of Napoleon, the area of Sharnak in the Middle East. in 1917 , whilst the French and British were other wise occupied, the populace rose up, and wrested power from the foreign administration, in a bloodless coup, as the French and British were heavily occupied with more pressing concerns, this was mostly ignored.
A government was duly and hastily formed, drawing members from the 2 main tribes of Sharnak. unfortunately, these 2 tribes of mainly nomadic people, were usually more interested in murdering each other, than actually getting along and running the new Nation state, in late 1918, a skirmish brewed up, over the rights to a sand dune mine in central Sharnak ( Sand being the main industry of the country, and as the war was going on sand for sandbags was in great demand, and Sharnak sand was the best sand bag sand in the world) The unrest turned into full scale and very bloody civil war, with the East of the country seceding and claiming sovereignty for the Eastern half of the country. The new country, named themselves Paran, and was ruled by a single and powerful clan of fierce Bedouin. the west of the country then named themselves Dhimar, and was a kingdom as the Shah was in that side and was loved by his people. and a kingdom was kept as the political rulers of the country.

The civil war continued sparodically for 18 months, during which time, both sides had managed to procure aircraft form various sources, There was a core of seasoned pilots, who had learned to fly whilst flying for the British, French, Russians and the Turks..

The Dhimari Army was in dire need of a ground attack and reconnaissance aircraft, much mooting, pondering, and attempts to buy either DH9's or Bristol Fighters from the British, were met with derision, from the British Air Ministry ( also probable annoyance over the coup ! ) So as these excellent aircraft were not available for purchase, they acquired the next best thing........or not, they managed to procure some clapped out Martinsydes which were war weary and rather tatty ( to say the very least ) however, with much time and sterling effort, they restored and refurbished the aircraft to a flying, and operational standard. the Aircraft though outdated, and very slow, dis have some very big teeth, it could carry a very healthy bomb load, was fitted with cameras, and was well armed (One fixed Lewis, and one on a mount behind the cockpit ) although the pilots found the workload to be rather high, as the aircraft was so slow and ponderous, operating 2 different gun groups, the bombs and the cameras all together required the dexterity of a 4 armed sword juggler. However, the aeroplane performed its duties with great fortitude, was reliable, and tough. one of the first true multi role aircraft on the battlefield !

    INSTALLATION

all files are included in the download, decals, guns weapons are all there, also the updated Nations.ini, and SquadronList.ini to allow the aircraft to show up, this aircraft has been converted from First Eagles , so the guns are new, and will not be in any SF2 weapons packs , so make sure you do install these guns, or else you wont be able to shoot anything !! I have also included a sound file for the Lewis gun as that needs to be installed to give the guns the correct sounds, all other sounds are also included for engines etc. I strongly advise you update your soundlist.ini with new entries ( if you are unsure how to do this, take a quick look at the forums, and there are detailed instructions for this there ) Other than that, just treat this aircraft as you would any other upload to SF2 .
The aircraft has a very nice bomb load ,but be aware, your wingman and or flight mates may use these at very random intervals, if they use them at all !! BE WARNED !! . The AI does seem to sometimes have a wobbler, and do its own thing, just ignore it, and get on with flying, and rack up some kills. I recommend letting the AI fly this aircraft as you will find your wingman bobbing about all over the sky quite annoying, also the thing is no fighter !! so prepare to be killed....lots.....and repeatedly.....over and over.......many many times.......no, really, trust me !! hahahaha

Originally the R.D.N.A.S. was looking into the purchase of the Hanriot HD2 as a naval fighter, but the Head of the Marine Aviation division was a firm Francophile, and vetoed the purchase of Hanriots, instead, purchasing a number of N27's from the French , Why this was allowed is not clear, as the N27 wasn't by any means an outstanding aircraft, however it was light and nimble, and with the Vickers/Lewis gun armament, quite effective as an interceptor, however in combad against the Parani DVII's it fared rather badly, but it also gave out punishment , particularly against the AEG's of Parani Forward Aviation.
