  2. Swift Swett

Pacific Fighters Mission - Coop for 4/8 players

On 7 April 1943, Marine Lieutenant James E Swett in an F4F-4 Wildcat called "Melvin Massacre" took off from Henderson field leading an element of VMF-221.

28 ?Wildcats? of VMF-221, 8 F4U-1s of VMF-124 and 6 P-38Fs of the USAAF?s 12th FS mission that day were to protect the fleet from an estimated 195 Japanese "Zekes" and "Vals"

Upon approaching Tulagi Lt. Swett found 67 D3A2 "Vals" and about 110 "Zekes" starting their attack. Accelerating, he quickly outdistanced his wingmen who were then jumped by the "Zekes" so with no one to help him he waded into the fray.

When he came out the other end he was wounded, had no ammunition left, an engine shot up bad enough that it would eventually seize up on him, and 7 confirmed and 1 probable D3A2s downed by his guns

For this Lt James Elms Swett earned a Medal of Honor. Can you do the same? Let me know what you think?

  3. Raising Havoc

    Raising Havoc in the Ardennes

It is January 23rd, 1945, and it's cold. The German advance in the Ardennes is nearly over, but the Panzer Army is desperately throwing more troops into the breach who try to keep their momentum going in The Battle of the Bulge.

Tasked with preventing German reinforcements from reaching the battle front, the Ninth Air Force including A-20 Havocs of the 410th Bomb Group launched a series of low-level attacks on enemy ground forces as they wound their way through the Ardennes. Flying conditions were not easy, cloud bases were low, and snow was in the air.

Locating an enemy convoy in open space, the Havoc pilots make a swift attack diving from 8000 feet (2,400m), catching the German force by surprise: Hurtling down the line of vehicles at 320mph (515kph) they release their parafrag bombs from 300 feet (90m) then, dropping just above the roofs of the army trucks continue down the column blasting everything in sight with their forward-firing .50mm calibre machine guns. In the space of a few minutes the attack is completed and the convoy decimated.

With amuntion expended and fuel running low the A-20 Havocs climb out of the zone and head for base in France. they return through a blizzard, but all aircraft make it safely home - the lead aircraft, on landing, counting over 100 holes of various sizes. For their part in leading the successful attack the Lead Pilot Russell Fellers and Bombardier/Navigator Gordon G. Jones received the Silver Star.

    June 4th, 1942 0710 hrs
Flying from Midway, four B-26s of the 69th Bombardment Squadron are sent to attack the Japanese fleet. Each plane carries one fish, hanging from its belly.

Heading through the tracers, they spy the Akagi.

"The whole world was on fire, the only place that wasn't was across the deck of that carrier". At a height of only 15 feet, Muri flew down the deck of the Akagi. He feels too close to the enemy to be shot at. But Muri goggles at Akagi's battle flag, snapping from her mast. He has seen the blazing Rising Sun flag in newsreels, but never in real life. Now it?s the biggest thing he's ever seen.

Muri pulls out surrounded by Zeros. The Japanese tear up the B-26, Cpl. Mello staggers into the cockpit, and says "The plane's on fire and everybody's hit back there." Co-pilot Moore rushes back with a fire extinguisher to douse the blaze. Then he gives sulfa powder, and mans a gun.

  10. FeFiFoFum Gigant Killer v1a

22 April 1943, Holy Thursday, just before Easter, was the blackest day of all for the Me 323s and their crews

14 Me 323s of II./KG.z.b.V each carrying about 10 tons of fuel destined for Army Group Tunis was intercepted by the South African Fighters at Cape Bon.

10 Ju 52s of Kampfgruppe z.b.V. 106 took off at 0640 hours bound for Tunis. The Junkers and a group of 14 Me 323s were supposed to fly to Tunis with the maximum available fighter escort.

Each Gigant was carrying 10 tons of fuel destined for Army Group Tunis.

The fighter escort of 39 Bf 109s assembled over Trapani. Another 65 fighters, including Macchi 202s, flew out from Tunis to meet the formation. West of Sicily the Kampfgruppe descended to a height of 20 to 50 meters above the sea. Halfway between Sicily and Tunisia the Me 323s separated from the Ju 52 formation and, contrary to orders, set course for Cape Bon. This splitting of the fighter escort meant that the Giganten had only 36 escorts instead of the planned 104.

At 0925 two large groups of South African fighters began attacking the Me 323s between Cape Bon and the island of Zembra. Conditions were hazy. The first group of enemy fighters engaged the Bf 109s of II./JG 27, which were flying at an altitude of about 2400 meters, and forced them away from the transports. This allowed the second formation, which was larger and made up mainly of P40 Kittyhawks of the South African Air Force, to attack the Giganten.

Once attacked, the Me 323s took evasive action and the wedge-shaped formation disintegrated. The huge, cumbersome transports had little chance of even reaching the African coast. Usually able to sustain a great deal of battle damage, on this day the Giganten were carrying volatile cargoes and most caught fire or exploded after a few hits. Though they put up stiff resistance, shooting down five to seven enemy fighters, the Me 323s were shot down one after another until the last Gigant crashed into the sea in flames.

  11. IL2FB Balaton Campaign

    From the readme...

This is a totally fictitious campaign involving the Balaton region map and the Player as a German pilot. You'll be flying first the B-239 Buffalo being used as a trainer, then the Bf-109E-4B Jabo fighter bomber. As you will quickly learn, this campaign came solely from my fertile imagination so if you are looking for history, you might try another campaign. Accurate history aside, if you are looking for a 37 mission campaign with varied missions and quick action, you've came to the right place. Ive tried to make each mission different and challenging without making the pilot fly 2 hours to get somewhere, or making the missions so tough you want to quit trying after doing the same mission 12 times.

This is a BETA release of this campaign. I would very much appreciate ANY feedback at all, positive, negative, contructive, destructive, or otherwise. Please let me know what you think. Thanks...

  12. September Mourn v1

    September Mourn v1
Soon available at www.combatace.com and at www.airwarefare.com

Only very courageous - or foolhardy - pilots would have dared to fly through the curtains of fog and mist that blanketed the undulating lands along the frontier between northeastern Germany and Poland at daybreak on September 1, 1939.

Luftwaffe 1st Lt. Bruno Dilley and his wing-men, 2nd Lieutenant Horst Schiller and Sgt Gerhard Grenzel, were all thoroughly trained fliers, and they would be piloting Junkers 87 dive bombers, called Stukas. Their mission was of vital tactical importance to the German Army, poised to plunge into Poland that very morning to strike the first blow of World War II.

Dilley's objective was a pair of huge steel railroad bridges that spanned the Vistula River on the edge of the town of Dirschau. The Stukas were not to demolish the bridges, however; the High Command of the German Army wanted the twin spans intact so that German troops and supplies could speed across the Vistula in their intended Blitzkrieg, or lightning war, against the Polish Army. Dilley's task was to prevent the Poles themselves from blowing the bridges as a defensive measure. Polish Army engineers had already affixed explosive charges to the bridge structures; the three Luftwaffe pilots were to destroy the wires that connected the explosives with remote electrical detonators located within the Dirschau railroad station.

Severing slender wires with bombs dropped from planes flying at high speed was a difficult undertaking, to say the least. To increase their chances of success, Dilley and his wingmen had scouted the area, changing into civilian clothes and boarding the Berlin-Konigsberg express, which ran through a slim corridor of Poland between Germany and East Prussia and across the vital Vistula bridges. From the train the German airmen had seen the detonator wires for themselves: They were strung along the riverbank. To hit so small a target, the Stukas? normally used as dive bombers?would have to be flown horizontally at treetop level. It was a risky business at best, and the fog and mist on the morning of September 1 made it many times more hazardous.

At 4:26 a.m., Dilley, Schiller and Grenzel gunned their Stukas across a rough airfield near Elbing, East Prussia, and took off. Dirschau lay 24 miles away. If all went well, they would reach it in just eight minutes.

For six minutes the three pilots and the rear gunners sitting behind them in the Stukas' two-seat cockpits hurtled straight ahead through blinding scud, the planes' big 1,210-horsepower Jumo 21 ID engines roaring at full throttle. Even a small error in calculating altitude would have meant smashing into one of the borderland's rolling hills, and each Stuka carried a 550-pound bomb under its fuselage and four 110-pounders below the wings that would have made any contact with the ground instantly fatal.

Two minutes from the target, Dilley dimly perceived the silver gray water of the Vistula beneath his wings. He banked to turn downstream toward the bridges, his wingmen following in line-astern formation. All three skimmed along less than 100 feet above the river.

The moment he sighted the bridges glimmering through the mist, Dilley radioed his pilots, "target ahead," and eased his Stuka into line with the embankment to the left of the two spans. He pressed the bomb-release button on his control stick when his plane was barely 100 yards from the twin spans' girders, then jerked the stick back and to the left. The Stuka, relieved of its bombs, leaped over the bridges in a tight climbing turn to port. Schiller followed in carbon-copy style. So did Grenzel. As they swung away, they could see that their bombs had plastered the area where the wires were strung. The time was 4:34 a.m., 11 minutes before the Army's scheduled 4:45 attack.

  15. Espagne

Here it is!!! The much talked about (OK, somewhat talked about) Spanish campaign.

    It consists of:
-the campaign missions, edited as well for single mission play
    -12 missions adapted for multi-player co-ops
    -all neccessary skins!!!

To install, simply do the following:

-unzip everything into a temporary folder (TEMP, for example), open the folder "Espagne" then cut and paste the folders named "Missions", "Samples" and "Paintschemes" into the Il-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles main folder.

And...voila! That's all there is to it!!

After taking off it will not be easy to survive all the different missions in this campaign.
To fly it, go to Campaign and, under France, select "Spain 1938".

Do not forget to activate the "play music" option, so you will have some ambiance sounds during the briefings.

In the skin of a Republican pilot you will take on your Nationalist adversaries (Fascist or Franquistes).
You will have the chance to try many different things: ground attack, reconnaissance, fly a captured enemy plane, escort bombers or secret agents, intercept bombers or enemy reconnaisance planes...

You will also encounter different types of planes...you will even find the enemy flying the same type of plane as yours on occasion so be sure about what you are firing at!!!

The multiplayer missions are playable from one side for those which take place on small maps, and from two sides for those on large maps.

Of course, the game does not provide a map of Spain (sniffff....) so I had to improvise a bit, but if you use your imagination for the names on the map it'll all be fine!!!

So, welcome to Spain, and fly well, compañero!!!

Oops..almost forgot...the first mission of the Campaign (All or Nothing) is an adaptation from a mission created by Mad_Cat.

    Have fun!!!

    ===============================
    Special dedication:

This work is affectionately dedicated to the memory of my grandfather, Paul (nicknamed Popol), who died 5 years ago, and who, in his youth and as a militant syndicalist and avowed Communist, volunteered to go and fight fascism in Spain in the ranks of the International Brigades. I miss you Papy...but
    the struggle goes on!!!

Thanks in particular to the Spanish Civil War site webcindario (hello Tuckie!!!), in Spain. It had the brilliant idea of reuniting in one place, the skins of all the aircraft that fought in the war in Spain,
    a la www.il2skins.com

Finally, a big thank you to Jude Simmonds, aka FlatSpinMan, a New Zealander who washed ashore in Japan, and who did what needed to be done to translate this campaign into English for our Anglo-Saxon friends!!!
He also created the bases from which you will take off. Yes, I know... I am quite lazy on this aspect of things... THANKS, man !!! You're the BEST !!!

Also special thanks to Jeanba with which I had so many mails about this campaign. Hope his PC is still OK... ;-)

Do not forget : switch off the "no instant success" option !!!

  18. The Battle of Malta 1940-42 (IT) 1.1

THE BATTLE OF MALTA 1940-1942 (IT) 1.0

    for Il2/AEP/Pf 4.03m+

A 62 mission Scripted fighter Campaign for an Italian fighter pilot based in Sicily.

This campaign is based on a lot of historical research, no real pilot would have had the opportunity to experience
all that is contained although I have constructed what I hope is a believable fiction.

Almost all the missions within this campaign are directly based upon real missions.

The variety and type of missions are varied but the focus is upon escort type missions and their evolution throughout
the period covered. There are also patrols, fighter sweeps, ground attacks, interceptions and a variety of 'specials' as the Regia Aeronautica struggle to win air superiority and prevent convoys and supplies from getting to Malta.

Convoys are central to this whole campaign so ships of all types and their attack and defence feature very heavily
    throughout.

    OR
in 'the Italian campaign pack' available at Ubi Pacific fighters under user campaigns,
many thanks to Gaston and everyone else involved.

ii) This campaign was constructed using the excellent il2 MATmanager and it is recommended that people install this
utility in order to be able to choose accurate plane markings.
(the campaign should still work without it but will not look as good as intended.)

Thanks to all the skinners that created the skins contained within, I have tried my best to agnowledge their excellent
    work. (see read me).

Unzip to your desktop and look at the enclosed Read Me(IT)

Hopefully there should be an Italian language version of this campaign to follow soon.

1.1 corrects some spelling and typos in the briefs.

  19. Khalkin Gol 1939 (co-op)

    For game version 4.70+

    6 Semi-Historical co-op missions for up to 24 players.

These missions are loosely based on the AARs that I could find, or they are linked to the ground action which is far better documented.

    Players fly Ki27's, I153's and I16's.

All missions should be complete within about 30 minutes.

There are Escort, Intercept and Ground attack missions designed to be played in sequential order to create a kind of mini campaign.

Special thanks to NHawk for his brilliant map template upon which this is based.

I originally designed these missions for the 102nd co-op server. You can find and play them there by typing DSC MAP 01 after joining.

  20. Raids over Managua

    Hi, old chaps!!

My new Campaign is available now:

"You are Buck Danny, back from Korea. You are invited to be a part of the Fuerza Aerea del Managua restructuration. Managua is a small but rich country of Central America, and also a young and strong ally of the USA.

Your action will be double. First, you will an observer sent by the American government to evaluate the material and training needs of the Managuaian Air Force. Then, you will become a flight instructor. You have returned to civilian life before being incorporated to the Managuaian Force with your former rank. Indeed, during this 1952 summer, USA have been at war in Korea for the last 2 years, and American opinion has become fed up with those murderer combats. For this purpose, your intervention must be the more discrete as possible. Of course, you won't be alone in Central America, and your faithful friends Captain Jerry "Tumb" Tumbler and he mighty Texan red haired Second Lieutenant Sonny Tuckson will come along. Some other pilots and technicians will of course be with you.

Your evaluation mission seems to go easy till the sworn enemy of Managua, Costa Verde, makes his move.

Only one philosophy must guide you : pilots are rare, and you must not hesitate to send them back to home base one you estimate the mission accomplished.

    Enjoy your flight!"

Coming with new skins, new medals, read me (french and english), 32 missions (in two versions, french and english).

  21. German Channelfront 1941-44

The german channelfront campaign, is a highly immersive dynamic campaign for german fighter pilots. It is a set from five subcampaigns from 1941 till the invasion in 1944.

To run the campaign you need IL2 Sturmovik 1946 (version 4.08) and the addon "battle over europe". Without battle over europe, you can´t start the campaign.

The package contains the campaign files and a skinpack. Please unzip the files into a temp-folder and read the README bevor you start to install the campaign.

  22. german channelfront campaign update to Vers. 1.1

In Version 1.1 i put in an additional subcampaign:

Channelfront end of 1942: Fortresses ahead

In this subcampaign, there is shown the first encounter of the B17 fortresses of france, since they flew their first missions over france from august of 1942 on. The fighter escort is done by Spitfires cause the first P47 fighters appeard at the beginning of the year 1943 (as far as I know).

I fixed some bugs and made some changes:

In the 1941 subcampaign i assigned the Hurricane IIb as Jabo only.
Changed some skin assignments in the 1943 subcampaign for JG2.
Changed the campaignsDe&.dat to show even the 41 subcampaign in the campaign menu (thx to vtrelut)
Made some changes in the opsnormandy44h.dat, to avoid possible crashes (thx to vtrelut)

  23. DGenbriefingsfixed2.zip

DGen campaigns briefings - All languages except Russian.
    --------------------------------------------------------

    Version 2.0 - July 8th, 2007

As you probably have realized if you play DGen dynamic campaigns, there are many mistakes in current DGen briefings files:

    1) Missing campaign briefings and/or debriefings, which result in strange words displayed on the screen, such as "LeningradSummer44DeBr" or "Africa42tGbDb" for instance.
    2) Mistakes in briefings, which can make it sometimes impossible to display them in the game, especially when DGen syntax is not properly respected.
    3) Wrong or missing aircraft descriptions or city names
    4) Spelling and grammar errors

There are countless errors in the files, which is unavoidable given the hundreds of possible campaigns and probably thousands of various combinations of missions and campaigns which are available.

So I checked each briefing file, in all languages except the Russian language, and compared the contents with each related campaignsXXY.dat file, for all DGen campaigns.

Basically all files have had to be corrected, except the Polish briefings and a couple of the RAF briefings over Murmansk. All others are corrected.
For spelling and grammar, I corrected only the French briefings. For all languages, I tried to correct as many DGen errors as possible, such as missing briefings or debriefings.

There are probably still many mistakes, but at least with these files now the user should be able to start a campaign without seeing something like "Lvov41SkBr", and finish campaigns without seeing something like "KurlandAug44DeDb".

Some of the briefings will appear in English even if you use another language in the game, some will be blank, but I added new ones for most campaigns which had no briefings.

Thanks a lot to Ljekio ULMAR who provided me with a translation of his Africa campaigns briefings made by Gagarin, which I adapted slightly.

Some mission briefings for the Luftwaffe over Africa may look strange, because they refer to Soviets as enemies: this is due to the fact that these files are common with Eastern Front campaigns.

TO INSTALL, simply unzip the DGen folder contained in the zip, into the game's main directory, for all versions of installations/add-ons/patches.

By default the game's main directory is C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946, or C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles.
You can also use these files if you have Pacific Fighters only.

Allow Windows to overwrite older files.

I intend to update these files whenever necessary.
If you find mistakes, please let me know what campaign/mission briefing is wrong, and I will do my best to correct further: e-mail to me at vtrelut@yahoo.fr

    Happy Flying!

  25. FrenchWings4345v1Part1.zip

French Wings 1943-1945: they were there too! PART 1

Fly with pilots from the French Air Force over North Africa, North-East France and Germany.

Between 1943 and 1945, the French Air Force was rearmed and reequipped with American and British combat aircraft of many types. They took part in fierce air battles, from the Tunisia 1943 campaign to the last push into Western Germany.

Through a series of 5 dynamic campaigns, you will fly with Antoine de Saint-Exupéry if you wish, or famous French aces like Edmond Marin la Meslée.

    Flyable planes include P-38s, P-39s, P-40s, P-47s, P-51s, Spitfires, A-20s, B-25J.

This package includes skins and all files for the campaigns, plus a bonus for the users of the add-on BOE (Battle Over Europe): an upgrade of the RAF bomber campaign which adds the A-20C as a flyable aircraft, with a Free French touch as well, added to both the RAF bomber and fighter campaigns.
