How much do you really play?

Recommended Posts

I was fiddling around with some ini files when I realized that I spend most of my precious little free time tinkering with the game and experimenting with mods, rather than actually playing. To my amazment I think I enjoy puttering around and trying this and that more than I like the actual game play.

Does anyone find this to be true, or am I just foolish?

Usually I think "Oh, I'll just install this mod or make this little tweak before playing," and before I know it, all my free time is gone! I am begining to think I like it...

A little.

LOL i just wanted to be cheap so I copied and modified some aircraft to carry weapons of all sides...

And usually only carry-all nuke weapons.. air and ground.

For some reason I get a kick out of my screen turning completely white... of course the "Check you fire!!!" always gets in my way... so I try to be RAMBO on most occasions..

Know what you mean. Skinning takes up most of my time, and then some modelling.

Yeah, I'm, the same. That's probably why I suck at it multi

It does require a bit of investment, but it's a great pay off! I was completely stoked when I was finally able to launch a Royal Australian Navy ex-IRIAF Tomcat off of a RAN Forrestal Class carrier to go bomb the hell out of Brisbane with some Kiwis flying top cover! How many sims let you do that with bugger-all knowledge of modding??

pff.. I loaded the missions only "Tomcats over Libya" where you take off from Carriers to your missions (this is being used under WoE mind you).. I put all the carrier files in the correct folder, in fact I put them in both the GroundObject and Objects folder.. added the correct info to the Groundobjectdata.ini file..

and Guess what I get to do everytime i do those missions..

I TAKE OFF FROM WATER!!>. I bet you wish you could do that eh?....

of course it would be nice if the water actually reacted to the engines thrusting all that air right over it.

Not foolish at all. For me two games come immediately to mind: Raven Shield - Spent three times more in the Unreal Editor than actually playing SP or clan matches and the King Daddy of them all, Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis. I spent about three years in the mission editor and about six months actually playing the game. Still have installed and still haven't completed the campaign from owning it since 2001!!!

I can definitely relate to this topic. Seems like I've spent the last three years tinkering...now it's time for some serious playing. Lately, I've been doing just that and having a stone blast!

Hooray im back to playing again - still even half way through campaigns im still changing ini's sometimes.

I felt sorry for the Migs and their useless missiles so I upgraded their missile parameters a bit and gave the Mig23's some flares - just to spice things up!

Saying that would F-4M's and Mig 23's not have flares in 1979 anyway!

For my, modelling carry the most of time 1 or 2 hours by day (In good days), and then testing.. just 10 or 15 mins.! until crash...

If I can take a different approach here, I'd like to address the learning aspect involved with playing the game. I do find myself tinkering more with the mods than playing the game istelf. And it has been highly educational, since I had no prior knowledge of "extracting" a file, or using notepad, or reading/manipulating an ini file to find out why the A-4EL was invisible on the tarmac and had the gun pod on top (LOL).

Again, I'd like to say thank to all the modders and forum members for their efforts in making this game what it is. To provide a wonderful product and advice, all for the cost of a simple "thank you" or "job well done" still boggles my mind, but is appreciated nonetheless. You've got a "customer" for life!

Best Regards,

It's the exact same situation with me re: Flight Simulator 2004. I have literally hundreds of aircraft/scenery/addons; yet I spend most of my time modifying them all.

But I love it just the same!

Same deal here. I have really got into making and tweaking missions. I am looking for a super-real feeling, so it is an endless task. Have also got into playing for making movies lately. I am currently working on a 'Ride of the Valkyries' film in WoV. But it is still great to load up a Thud and swing North...

Ergo, Yankee Air Pirate. We've tried to be accurate and do all the tweaking for you, so you can just fly. Granted its era specific but thats the beauty of it.

in the end of things some people just feel more comfortable tweaking themselves.

I've been playing Strike Fighters for a few months now. I didn't realize when I bought it all the mods available, it just looked like a good game!

I haven't done any modding of my own, but I might have to try now that I've got loads of aircraft and weapons to play with. Sure is fun using a nuclear AAM and slaughtering whole squadrons of enemy bombers at once!
