Echoes of Cold War as RAF jets scrambled to see off Russian spy planes

Recommended Posts

I know it's no longer routine, but I understood this still happens on occasion and during major exercises. It's always sound policy to watch everyone.

We still have a standing QRA with my "local" RAF base (Leuchars where these scrambled from) providing the northern 1.

They're supposed to start transitioning to Typhoons from Tornado F3s at the end of this year.

As it happens I spent a few days last week taking photos at a couple of othe RAF bases which were launching strikes & ASW aircraft involved in the exercise (Neptune Warrior). An RAF E-3 AWACS was also permanently on station drawing circles in the sky.

Check out the figures on that page, the Tonado F3 can fly way further then that. The Bear too!

Bears would regularly fly unrefueled from somewhere around Murmansk, down Scandinavia, past the UK, across the Atlantic, down the eastern seaboard and land in Cuba.
