The belligerent Latin American leftist warned last week that his recent build-up of sophisticated Russian and Iranian weapons would be used to destroy the British fleet if it attempted to return to the South Atlantic.

 

Speaking on his weekly television show Alo Presidente (Hello, Mr President), Chavez denounced what he described as Britain’s “illegal occupation” of the Falklands and repeated his call for a regional military alliance against Britain and the United States.

 

“If we had been united in the last war, we could have stopped the old empire,” Chavez said, as he gesticulated to maps showing how Venezuelan aircraft and submarines would intercept British warships. “Today we could sink the British fleet.”

 

Chavez has often expressed support for Argentina’s claim to the Falklands, but his latest broadside was notable for both its antiBritish vitriol and its unprecedented threats. He declared that British history was “stained with the blood of South America’s indigenous people” and demanded revenge for the “cowardly” sinking of the General Belgrano, the Argentine cruiser.

 

Western diplomats have long grown used to harangues from Chavez, who announced this weekend that he would negotiate with guerrillas holding dozens of hostages in Colombia, including three US contractors and Ingrid Betancourt, a French-Colombian abducted as she campaigned for president in 2002. But US and British officials have recently become more concerned by his willingness to lavish billions of dollars from Venezuela’s soaring oil income on military capabilities.

 

On his TV programme, Chavez introduced a group of 30 Venezuelan pilots who were trained in Russia to fly a squadron of 24 Sukhoi SU-30 multi-role fighters. The aircraft were part of a $3 billion armaments deal with Moscow.

 

Chavez has also bought 100,000 AK-47 assault rifles and negotiated to set up a Kalashnikov factory in Venezuela. He has reportedly ordered nine Russian diesel submarines, including the cruise missile-carrying 677E Amur-class vessel.

 

The Venezuelan pilots told him they would soon be training with medium-range BrahMos missiles, a supersonic antiship cruise missile jointly developed by India and Russia.

 

US officials also fear that Chavez may be seeking nuclear technology from his contacts with Iran and North Korea. He is discussing a possible joint programme with Tehran to build an unmanned drone aircraft similar to the American Predator and has long been engaged in a regional attempt to promote military cooperation against the US.

 

So far most of his neighbours have shied away from confrontation with Washington, but Chavez is continuing to press for the creation of a “single South American army”.

 

His outspoken attacks on Britain and his support for Buenos Aires have gone down well in Argentina, where President Nestor Kirchner’s wife, Cristina, is the favourite to succeed her husband in elections next month.

 

While there is no indication that either of the Kirchners wants to precipitate a new crisis over the Falklands, military analysts say Venezuela’s lengthening military reach might seriously impede any British attempt to dispatch a new task force.

Like Marc said, Venezuela isn't by itself an issue...but the idea of building an 'anti-Northern' alliance could be a concern.

 

However, I also think some are starting to figure out Venezuela's democracy is being turned into a dictatorship...one that isn't looking so benevolent. Witness the shutting down of an opposition radio station, and now pushing a 'no term limits' change to their constitution... After all the various dictatorships that used to exist in Latin America, I would hope people would be leery of such a change to reoccur.

I don't know what the pentagon thinks, but he is nuts. I've heard some things that seem to conflict with his outspoken publicity, like sending a loaded oil tanker to the US for free heating oil for seniors who can't afford it to heat their homes during the winter on their own, which IMO isn't so terrible. But then he keeps trying to stir up hostilities with the US and Europe like if he was the leader of some South American Soviet Union.

 

Some say it's just political manuevering, trying to gain support and influence. That may be true, but he's certainly crazy and I have a very good sense for what kind of person someone is.

it seems to me the problem here is not a confrontation, war is not an option anymore, not in the era of communication, the big issue we have here in the south America is that historicaly everybody came here looking for gold, silver, and now for oil, trees(amazonas) and cocaine,... and in the process to many people died, entire populations, cities, were burnt to ashes just by lust, and nobody was (or better) nobody is judged for doing that; I do not know if Mister Chavez is crazy, but Evo Morales is in a place that no one without his skin colour should be, minding bussiness of his own people country nd resources, without gringos; i think what happened in Malvinas was wrong, but like James Monroe (1890s US president) said "Americas for the americans", even when US goverment itself looks away when it comes to this Falkland story....I don't think Hugo Chavez looks for a retalition (just a little affair with US i guess) but the world to turn sights to this site of the map, and stop thinking we are a bunch of monkeys that cannot run our countries without F.M.I. foot over, and stop believing what they want you to, showing manipulated news, it is a cuestion of not listening everything they gives you to,..... but lookout, original owners of this lands (the Chavez or Evos and other thousand aborigen people like them) still have some hardfeelings about this issues....

 

I repeat, war is not an option, don't forget that here we all have parents with Spanish last names, italians, frenchies and even so British, you only have to read the names of Argentine Air Force pilots during the conflict to realize....Salute

IMHO it's just another version of the same story Chavez has been playing since he has come into power. In fact it's the same story every dictator is using to rally the people to support him. You attempt to create unity within your group (or society) by identifying an enemy outside your group (usually that's the US).

 

It seems to me that Venezuela isn't big enough for him as seems to consider himself to be the spokesperson for entire South America. Maybe I'm wrong about this but I don't think that the inhabitants were all to pleased in 1982 when the Argentian troops appeared on their island. But perhaps this was English propaganda, too. Who knows?

I learned in college that America had always practiced a policy of control over its neighbouring countries (well, they must think Canada of being harmless) and in the past imposed and supported dictatorships which were friendly to the US, in central and south America. This whole Chavez thing is really a retribution for that policy of domination, and finds supporters amongst countries whose rulers are disappointed with lack of support from the US to promote their development. Chavez apparently saw how Castro managed to run a country under Fidel's view of a social state, and seems to try to outdo him with Venezuela, and that "power to the people" slogan always sounded attractive in the countries in South America where most of the wealth is held by a very small minority of the population, so Chavez's call for socialism seems appealing to others as well. Who knows, maybe we'll see a Socialist South American Union? But the notion that they would be able to sink the british fleet just like that... Well, the british fleet is somewhat ageing, due to the lack of funds for replacement ships, but if faced with war, I bet the british will push their weight around and do whatever it would take to hold their ground, in defence of the Falklands or whatever... In terms of naval capabilities I think the british submarines alone could rule the waters... Whereas admittedly the Harriers are no match for Flankers... The RN really would need the F-35s as soon as possible I guess if they would want to stand a chance in the air...

Usually with socialist dictatorships, power to the people means power to el jeffe and nothing but continued poverty for the people. The way Chavez acts though, would make south americans look like monkeys instead of civilized people.

The dog being the armed forces of the United Kingdom, I from England that’s my home (I live in the US because of work) he has his troops set one foot on the Falklands and he is going to have one pissed of Island nation who will be out for his blood. The days of the British Empire may have ended long ago, but the fire that enable the Brit's to build an empire still burns very hot and we will fight for what’s right and ours! He's a wind bag and likes to shoot his trap off about this and that, but still I can't help but get red faced mad when he makes threats toward my home forces.

I think chavez is not the problem, but hes the leading man....im just worriyng about his "backup".

A single CVBG would clean his military's clock in a single day. They may have the toys but can't use them worth a damn.

 

However Piloto his back is a HUGE worry too.
