Downed a MiG-21 in Vietnam: The Experience

Recommended Posts

After reading some SimHQ posts, I was curious about the Vietnam: The Experience mod for Operation Flashpoint/Resistance.

It is an awesome mod complete with jets.

So I made a simple mission: F-4E vs MiG-21.

Of course the flight physics, avionics, and graphics suffer the usual OFP limitations.

But overall, I was very impressed.

It was fun and somewhat immersive.

It would be great for online play compared to the SFP1 series: climb into your aircraft, take-off, land, custom missions.

You can eject and fight on the ground: imagine finishing up your mission by trying to evade capture on the ground and getting picked up by a SAR helo with a Spad escort?

If Bohemia Interactive could ever get their support for aircraft up to the level of SFP1, it could easily become the ultimate flight sim ever made.

Have you played it on ArmA???

All they have done to VTE on ArmA is port it over from OFP. It doesn't ahve everythign ported yet (Still some things missing) but when it is done... WOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!! :haha::clapping:

I didn't realize it had been ported over to Armed Assault... I should have looked closer at the PMC website.

The 3d model for the F-4 could be a lot better, but from the cockpit perspective, it was adequate for OFP style gameplay.

Of course, unlike any other combat sim that has ever modeled the F-4, you can actuactually carry another player in the back seat.

But with little to no avionics modeled, the backseater is mainly just another set of eyes.

The planes for OFP straight suck. Due to the flight model and physics. But there are a lot of mods out there that have the tandem crew concept (limited by the game engine.)

There is an F-18E/F mod where the WSO functions like a tank commander

There is a Tornado mod where the WSO is strictly a gunner for the larger A/g weapons, bombs, JP dispenser, etc. I think the pilot has control of the gun and the A/A stuff and the ability to track targets.

The F-15E mod functions in much of the same way.

There use to be a night interdiction B-57 that was tandem crew and the back seater had a bomb sight for the iron bombs.

Let it be known the engine on OPF and Arma for flight is very limited. The AI sucks at ground attack and especially dropping bombs. You will heavy B-2s or B-52 diving in on a target like an A-10. Ai (unless there is laser spot on the ground) will never put the bombs were you want them. Ai almost always attacks moving vehicles only (MTBs are the main target). Bombs function just like missiles (with no booster) and have a very compact blast radius almost like a grenade (they rest is usually visual effects or scripts.)

With human flight it is still very hard to control, most jets zip across the little maps at 700 kts, and flying them is like balancing a bottle cap on a pin point.

I love OFP to death and it is my favorite game, but I believe that aircraft are only good for scenery and immersion, I let the gunships and armed slicks do the A/G work.

The best ground attack platforms I have found that were modded for the game are

The A-1 (easiest to control, you can handle low without worrying about trees, and its payload is a beast)

The A-26 for its guns

The F-18F for its payload and heavy amount of scripts the plane has

The Tornado GR for its payload and its ability to lay down mass destruction

The A-10 although in dives and at high speed you can loose control.

the home for "VTE" is here:

I found the F-4E fairly controllable in OFP, I don't know about Armed Assault.

I do no that the AH-1 in Armed Assault (including the latest patches) seems harder to control than the AH-1 in OFP.

Zipping across the maps remains an issue, though the MiG-21 and me stayed close with a tight turning circle/vertical loop fight.

The MiG-21 flew into the ground once.

It would be interesting to see how an online MP mission involving 8 or more aircraft for each side would turn out.

It is not very realistic in any way shape or form... yet if fun and immersive.

<<If Bohemia Interactive could ever get their support for aircraft up to the level of SFP1, it could easily become the ultimate flight sim ever made.>>

Once again, I couldn't agree with you more...and it makes me want to put all my modding and editing efforts into this series of games, just because it is so immersive.

OFP really is the best helicopter sim ever made.

I hope the OFP/ARMA community keeps expanding, and that the software remains open source along the same lines.
