Is there a way?

Hey guys,

I was just wondering if there was an easy .ini way to make your AI flight fly at a lower altitude? I'm flying the F-111, so I want my boys to fly in, pickle, and get the hell out the target area as low and fast as possible!

Instead some just loiter around at 4,000 feet getting their arses shot.

Obviously they will follow your general altitude, but will not go below around 1,000 feet. We just need a way to tell the AI, follow my exact altitude even if it's 100 feet.

Well, the altitude information is not in the Formation.ini file; I just checked. The problem with running not-terribly-nimble AI-driven aircraft at extremely low altitude is that they could crash pretty easily.

Thnks for checking, I din't even know there was a Formation.ini! Yeah I was guessing that the AI might smack into the ground if they flew at 100 feet. We would 'just' need to tell the program never let AI planes go below 50 feet.

Unfortunately this is probably getting into the hardcode? :dntknw:

I believe (though I could be wrong) that the altitude control is in the Mission Data ini, which is found in the Flight folder. You may need to use the extractor if it hasn't already been extracted.

I took the liberty of doing some investigating (thanks Tank). In the MissionControl.ini within the MissionData bundle, there are [Altitude] settings that can be altered. To keep any modified settings, you'd just store the edited MissionControl.ini file in your Flight folder, overriding the bundled default MissionControl.ini file.

 

I have never tried this mod myself.

Another option would be to use one of the mission editors and script a mission yourself. In the way you have complete control over all parameters of the mission.

There are various altitude settings under the many AI skill sections (these paragraphs start about 1/3 of the way down the ini), ie :

except that the mission altitudes appear to be msl and don't take terrain into account. They just plow into the mountainsides......

OK, I'm going to give the MissionControl.ini thing a go and see what happens.

 

Update: Scratch that idea; it didn't work. Planes flew at their default altitudes.

Yes, it goes in the Flight folder after you alter the altitudes. I've altered mine to higher atitudes and it works. Generally the AI flys the Normal or High altitude setting in mine, and rarely the Low or VeryLow. Maybe it's aircraft type or mission dependent. Try setting your Normal to 152.4 (meters) and see if the AI flys around 500 ft.

 

My settings:

By the way a text search of that .ini file shows no result for 'VeryHigh'. So I either extracted the wrong thing or I'm missing something. :huh:

The file you want in the MissionControl file found in the Flight folder. I think it's in the Flight Data cat or maybe the Flight Engine Cat. Either way it's definitely a mission file you are looking for and not an Aircraftdata file.

It is the MISSIONCONTROL.ini

The section you want is this:

 

[Altitude]

Normal=3000

Low=1000

VeryLow=500

High=5000

VeryHigh=8000

 

 

I believe the altitudes are in meters. :good:

 

If you put the altitudes too low ,you will run into cumulous granite in hilly or mountainous areas.

That's it!

Very quick testing with these settings:

 

[Altitude]

Normal=150

Low=100

VeryLow=50

High=5000

VeryHigh=8000

 

Made my flight follow me down low! :clapping:  

I guess around hilly terrain I can pull up a bit and avoid AI crashes, since they follow my altitude. Thanks guys, I learned alot!

Ahhh! I didn't change the 'Normal' setting at all; that's why my mod didn't yield anything. Thanks for pressing on!
