this was weird.

I got the Heinkel He-111H-2 from capun's site, in the 3rd party mods section. I believe it was modified by Charles. Anyway, I went off after one in my La-7 (wonderful plane), and I managed to dodge the tail gunner fire long enough to put some shells in the left engine and fuselage. It was kinda fun watching the thing go down, it actually sorta glided down to it's demise, unlike the TW planes which spin like crazy into a firey ball of oblivion. However, when it hit the ground, a bunch of pieces fell off,

but it just slid along the ground, and I got no "You gat 'im!" or "Nice Shooting!" over the radio. Furthermore, I could still select it by pressing F6.

After I stopped laughing ("I'm not dead yet!" ), I decided to put it on the cart for good by blowing the bajeebers out of it with my three 23mm cannon. However, no matter how many passes I made and how many more parts fell off and how many hits and explosion sounds I got, It still stood there, sliding at about one knot with one foot (or, in this case, the whole foreward fuselage) in the grave. I ran out of ammo and sidled up beside it for a photo ("man, the guys are never gonna believe this!") , and went home.

My question is: Is there a .ini tweak to make this thing blow up once it hits the ground? I thought of getting rid of all the armor or making the fuel tanks non-self-sealing. I could just go get a different He-111, but the H-2 is my favorite to shoot at (closest to production form, but not totally helpless).

Capun recently updated the He-111H6, on which all of the other Heinkels are based. I've not used it yet, but it's supposed to make that one more destroyable. If someone lets me know what he changed I'll update the other versions here and at his site.

I think that there was some discussion on this in the BoB campaign thread a few months ago.

Hmm... Isn't game He-111 made in such a way that to kill it you need to hit the cockpit?

well, the cockpit was kinda underground, so I couldn't strafe it, and I suck at head-on attacks.

Oh, and sorry jb42, I didn't see that you were this thing's creator in the readme, but I guess I sorta followed proper bug report protocall...

Ok - I asked Capun on his forum to advise what needs changing on He-111H2 (and the other versions) to bring them in line with the H5, H6 and P versions he's got out.

I took the H6 and P out for a run in my BoB install. Just a two ship test flight, although the game gave us an escort of 109s. While they were partying with a load of Spitfires a flight of Hurricanes engaged us. I kept us straight and level so we would take the maximum damage.

They were just Mk1s but they blew the cr*p out of us! There were chunks flying off both planes. My wingie in the He-111P went down in a graceful glide and exploded on impact. I tried to belly land because my undercarraige had been shot away. I bumped for a bit and then blew up too.

ok, well maybe I'll download one of those models and see how wellI fare againt them. I'll also try using some faster firing 50 cals rather then those 23mm cannon.

I've updated the He-111H2, H3, H4 and H8 to bring them up to the same standard as Capun's versions (P, H5 and H6) in terms of packaging, FM and damage modelling. They're a lot easier to shoot down, and to be shot down in if you're flying them!

They'll also explode when they hit the ground from a steep angle, and if they come in at a shallow angle they will belly flop, skid along the ground, and then will usually explode.

I've also sent Capun a He-111H1, based on his He-111P. It's virtually the same aircraft, except the H1 had Junkers Jumo 211 engines, as opposed to the P's Daimler-Benz DB601 engines. Defensive armament is pretty light too, with just nose, dorsal and ventral machine guns.

The included skin is for an aircraft from Stab. KG26, based in Germany in 1939. This particualr aircraft was shot down near Edinburgh during the last week of October that year.

There lots more He-111 skins to come, covering Europe, the Med. and the Eastern Front.

all right! I can't wait to take on some of these guys now that they'll blow up! great work, and thank you!

Also, why not make a red and white bull's eye texture? It'll just speed up the inevitable!

No problem.

There will be a delay in getting these updates and the He-111H1 version posted at Capun's site because he's laid up with broken ribs. There's a get well soon thread over at the site if anyone wants to pop over there to wish him a speedy recovery.
