Hi guys

I am writing this message in a time of great sorrow... I have just returned from a strike mission in northern vietnam (in WOV OCT 08 patch) and after succesfully hitting the pt dock we were tasked with, my flight and myself managed to egress succesfully. As I was rather pushed for time I decided to skip from waypoint 6 to my approach at Udorn RTAFB . As I did this I appeared near my final and there was a big mountain in between, so I went ahead and cleared it rather effortlessly then looked on in utter disbelief as my wingman and flight 2 attempted to fly straight through. I knew that the thud is a very robust aircraft but even I expected this a bit much to ask of it. And sure enough the three aircraft simply disintegrated before my eyes. RIP Capt Blake, 1stLt Tax, 2ndLt Tibbett!!!!

As an afterthought I had a look round and found the UberAI mod which im thinking about installing. I was just wondering whether it will fix this problem with the friendly AI aswell?

Thanks in advance

Mike

I have had the auto pilot fly me into the ground on several occasions. Any terrain that is mountainous or is at a high altitude I always fly home manually. The two big ones are coming home over the mountains in VietnamSEA and flying anywhere in AmericaNW. It's difficult to fly at 2,000 feet when the terrain is 3,000 feet above sea level.

Do not use the uber AI Mod with the latest patches.

At the bottom it says.

WARNING: DO NOT INSTALL THIS FILE INTO FE, WoI, or any Other Third Wire title that's been updated with any patch dated 2008 or later!

If really pressed for time and you are on your way home, just ESC and that's it. If anything, i NEVER use autopilot unless i'm close to base and need a break.

One question about Uber AI (for WOE)...Does it dumb down the enemy or does it improve the guys in your squadron?

see, that's what I've been wondering...

as far as I've seen, apparenty they don't do too well in a dogfight unless the aircraft is superb.

That mod was for when the AI (enemy) was really really bad. Before the Oct patches. So do not use them in the new stuff. It doesnt work.

I'm wondering more about my Squadronmates. I remember scrambling 12 Huns to defend against an incoming Soviet strike on our base and 10 of them got shot down with only 3 getting kills.

Or one pilot in an F4 unit who not only killed one of our own during a CAS with a cluster bomb, but crashed during another CAS, and managed to pull the trifecta by killing me with an AIM9 on another mission.

LOL The wingman AI has always sucked. Its better than it was. The UBER AI mod does nothing for them.

Damn, thats what i feared!

It's to the point that i'm so worried about my wingmen that the temptation is strong to send them home sometimes rather than see them get shot down.

I'm of the same opinion as SidDogg. Unless they are in top notch aircraft they are pretty much doomed.

There is an aspect of AI that I had never thought of until TK and I were chatting about it while answering someone elses post at the Third Wire forums:

If you set the difficulty to HARD for AI, the enemy is smarter and your friendlies are dumber.

I have always played on all HARD settings, so I was crippling my own forces!

What it does is make enemy pilots more likely to be veterans and aces and make friendly pilots more likely to be novices and dead meat.

Since the last patch, the enemy AI is much smarter and friendly AI, even dumbed down a bit by HARD settings, seem more likely to get their fair share of kills.

But I bet if I use normal, my wingmen would do as well or better than enemy AI, especially since nationality also plays a part in pilot quality and the US generally has equal or better pilots than most nations it opposed.

Excellent info, Streak. Thanks!

Ps: How old is the little guy now? The one in your sig pic.

One thing that gets me with the new AI is when the flight of F-4Es im escorting get locked up by SAMs - no surprise flying at 5000ft  they then jettison their bombs - then they all fly off in different directions after any surrounding Migs lol - come back!!!

and yes have noticed that my AI wingmen on Hard level get blow out of the sky unless they have good missiles - even then an F-16A wingman got outturned by a MiG-21! then preceded to fly in a straight line with it sitting on his A

Apart from that the AI is now much better - wish they could terrain mask properly though!

on the topic of autopilot. I find that I use wing leveler more often than full autopilot. Gives me more control while at the same time prevent me from going off course or crashing while I am looking away.
