Hi Ravenclaw.

 

I mentioned in your other thread when you posted this skin that my dad flew this Phantom, and I'd post some pics when I found them.

 

Well, I found them finally and scanned them in.

 

The first picture is of four of the Shamrocks flying in formation. My dad had this on his wall for as long as I can remember- at least 25 years.

 

 

 

When my I took the above picture off the wall and out of the frame, I found this picture underneath. if you closely, dash-2 is the same buno as the skin you made and, although it is hard to read in this picture, the ship name on the Phantoms is "USS America"; this is the exact jet you skinned, shot in formation by my dad in, probably, 1975 or 1976, before their Nimitz cruise. Like I said, the amazing thing is that this picture was sitting behind the other one all these years, and I never knew it was there.

 

 

I found this picture in a photo album with a handful of other pictures.

 

 

I know my dad took this picture, but the Phantom escorting the Bear is from a different squadron. I don't know if it was standard procedure to launch Phantoms from different squadrons on intercepts, or if my dad was backseating with another squadron or what. Even though it's not a VMFA-333 Phantom, I thought you'd enjoy the picture of the Bear intercept.

 

 

Finally, this is a pic of my dad who, sadly, passed away about 10 days after I earned my own wings in the Navy, almost 12 year ago now. There is no way I can describe the influence he had on me, and how much I still miss him everyday. Somehow, I think he would have gotten an absolute joy out of flying around with me in your skin.

He looks familiar......I transferred to VMFA-333 from 235. I got to Beaufort late in 74'. Left there early 77' to VMA-331 in A-4M's. I more than likely have a Picture of Him somewhere. Surely in a Squadron Picture I have.....I'll look for it.

No worries on the PM, my dad's name is "Iron Mike" Loomis. He did a cruise with 333 from 76-77 with the Nimitz. I'm not sure the exact dates he reported or left.

 

If you were there in early '77, chances are you two crossed paths.

Yep.....Sure did. Damn, Small World. I used to like his Callsign. That's how I remember Him.....Loaded Ordnance on some of His Ops....I remember Him being a "Cool" Officer to talk to. I had to talk to many of them on their Ordnance Debrief's while signing any MAF's for Gripes they may have encountered. I say "Cool", because Us Enlisted used to keep a running Tab on the Officers that One could approch and talk to.....And of course, There was those that looked at You as another "Life Form". Your Dad wasn't one of them. Man, this is a small World.

 

Sorry to hear of His Passing. I was a 22-23 Year Old Corpral at the Time. A long time ago. He was a real good Man and Officer. I'm glad to have known Your dad for what short Time I did....

 

Me and the Ole' Lady will go through My Pictures Tonight. I'm sure I'll dig up one for You...

Wow, that is so touching to hear. There are so few people with which I can chat about my dad, and...well, I sort of thought I'd have forever to chat him up about all his experiences, you know? Anyway, I don't want to get too emotional and stuff, so I'll just stop there.

 

You may or may not have realized it, but my dad was prior enlisted. He enlisted as a Private, went to Parris Island, and was a radar tech. He had two years of college before he enlisted and I guess they had a program back then that allowed enlisted guys with some college to go to OCS and get commissioned. He was a Marine through and through, and a seriously motivated fighter RIO.

 

I had several relatives that were enlisted in the Marines, although they were probably too young to have run across you- I'll PM you about them.

 

Anyway, I'll shoot you a PM with my email address and if you come up with any pics, you can post them here if you'd like.

 

I am 95% positive that I have a model of that exact jet hanging on my son's ceiling now- built when I was a kid myself.

Our dad's flew together in VMFA-333. In fact, in the '76-'77 cruise book, our dads are in a photo together. My dad was Clayton "Nub" Stillings. 331Killerbee may remember him as well since my dad flew with both 235 and 333. Hopefully you guys are still active on this forum. I'd like to chat with both of you.

 

My dad passed away in '95 from Cancer when I was 13. I guess because I feel like there are many unanswered questions (and a constant desire to remember exactly who my dad was), I often do searches on google for my dad, or keywords like VMFA-235, 333, Death Angels, Shamrocks, etc.

 

 

I actually found this forum when the picture of your dad popped up on Google images. The man in the photo bears a striking resemblance to my own dad so I immediately clicked on it. I recognized the name "Mike Loomis" immediately. Hope to get in touch with you and Killerbee.

Sorry for the extremely long delay replying to this thread- I don't frequent these forums all that often. 

 

Very cool seeing that picture.  My dad also has/had that picture on his wall.  Like I said earlier, he passed away as well in 1998.  All of his memorabilia is still hanging up on our basement wall downstairs in my mom's house and that picture is still hanging up.  That is just too cool.

Apparently I'm just as delayed as you are, toonces. Thank you for the response. It is definitely cool that our dads flew together.

On a side note, I FINALLY started working on my pilot's license a few weeks ago. Getting married in July, probably have kids within a couple years. I figured I better do this now or I'll have to wait until I'm 50-60.

I now serve on the board of directors of VMFA-333 Inc.  A non-profit organization. I'm also the webmaster for the organiztion website. Toonces I have all the images that you scanned and shared here. In fact your fathers image is a part of the sites header. CStillings82, I have that picture of your father as well. To go along with that image I have many aircrew pictures such as you shared of 333 during that period. Some of those men are active members of the organization now. We are a very social group and welcome family of past 333 members.

 

LtGen Keith Tadler who is in one of those pictures as a lieutenant is actually our organization president. I'm sure there are others there that knew your fathers. We have a reunion every 2 years. Next one is June of 2015 and will be in Charleston, South Carolina. Only 50 miles from MCAS Beaufort, 333's home, which we will be visiting.

 

I invite you to visit the organization website at http://vmfa-333.com. I just published the first information concerning next years reunion. Registration is not required to view the site but I just added some forums and they do require registration (trying to stop the spammers).

Mr. Lailik, I'm sorry that I did not get this until now. I would have loved to join you all at the reunion in June. You mentioned Lt Gen Stalder...Keith was one of my dad's best friends! I thought he was living back in Hawaii?

 

I'm going to have to set some time aside to get involved with the group. I'm sure I'll do that before you see this message!
