Blowing ships with guns

Recommended Posts

Guys, we sure all have memories from WW2 documentaries or thing like that of ships being straffed by war planes and subsequantly blewing up.

As straffing is one of my favorite sport, I've tried it a few times on ships without results.

Does TK games make the gun-sinking of ships possible? Did one of you managed it once?

I've sunk a ship by unloading much of 3 suu-23's into a cargo ship.

for my understanding?

you can´t sink a ship with guns,

or you cant sink it with crashing into it?

Gunfire works fine. But it depends on the firepower of your cannon

and your targeting skills...

20mm or higher I sink them all the time with my A-4.

Some do and some don't. 20mm gatling seems to work as does the Hunter's 30mm Aden.

Is it more the case of what type of ship?

depends on how well the ship is armored. Cargo ships and sampans go down pretty easily, although in a WWII sim using .50 cal, the ships tend to survive and most of them will shoot your, uh, south side out of the sky.

against a combattant - strafing generally doesn't do enough damage and will more often than not get you once again, shot out of the sky.

but against cargo ships, sampans, barges, etc, anything 20mm or heavier generally works pretty well.

With a MiG it is no problem to blow up a ship. With 30mm or bigger caliber its no matter where to hit. In real life you will have no chance to sink a ship, exaption liquid gas tankers.

Armour piercing rounds is the way to go. I will bet that a .50 cal with AP rounds will penetrate most Merchant vessels. It's a fact in world war 2 that a A-26 Invader litteraly could cut a cargo ship in half just with its 0.50's. But again it could just be a matter of the volume of fire alone that did the trick. 14 forward firing .50's is laying out a tremendous volume of AP AP incindiaires and lead.

Just my 2 cents

Once i tunned up my F-5 and changed my M39 20mm guns

for Mk.45 USN 127 mm guns. It was semiautomatic, and served as an airbrake,

but believe, it works

All right chaps, it works indeed.

Guess the fact that I last tried with the malvina mod where ships are not really ships influenced me.

hgbn, penetrating is one side, sinking the other. Somewhere i have a picture of a east german fish trawler who was accidently attacked by MiG's. (Stupid fisherman were sailing through a maritime shooting area)

The trawler was full of holes, but the ship does not sunk.

I'd look to rocket pods to give them that sinking feeling... Usually on a A-1H
