Silverbolt 104 Posted February 26, 2009 (edited) hey EricJ and FC, here is some extra motivaton to keep the growler: Today was Electronic Awareness Appreciation Day at Andrews AFB. The base hosted a sort of petting zoo for high-tech jamming systems. I noticed a Boeing EA-18G parked on the side, and struck up a conversation with the pilot. As we chatted about interference cancellation systems, I couldn't help but notice an odd decal decorating the side of the fuselage. I asked the pilot: What's that aircraft decal on the fuselage? "That's an F-22," he said. Well, why is it there? "Because this is the EA-18G that killed an F-22," he explained. Um, really? Alas, after that bombshell, the conversation quickly dried up. I did learn the EA-18G kill was courtesy of a well-timed AIM-120 AMRAAM shot. And I learned the simulated combat exercise took place at Nellis AFB. How the EA-18G escort jammer got the shot, and whether its jamming system played a role in the incident were not questions the pilot was prepared to answer. +EricJ 3,931 Posted February 26, 2009 There was another exercise I heard about on Alert5.com that a VFA-11 pilot managed to get his gun pipper on a F-22 as well. More than likely the F-22 was OPFOR for the air to air exercise and the F-22 lost. Kinda how the Navy puts "GO NAVY BEAT ARMY" quite proudly on their aircraft. Next time that happens it's going to be "GO ARMY BEAT NAVY" on a Navy jet. But honestly, given the Army's record... +Typhoid 231 Posted February 26, 2009 the story that I heard on those (about fortyfifth hand....) was that the Raptor came down into a furball and simply didn't see that other guy coming up from behind. pretty much the rule from decades past that it is the guy you didn't see that bagged your @$$..... but since the exchange rate was somewhere in the hundred to one, I wouldn't put the Raptor out to pasteur just yet. Well it's about all the action the air to air guys are gonna get for the next few years so might as well make them feel special! As for kill marks, reminds me of the story of the EF-111 which was credited with a kill of a Mirage F1 during Desert Storm... quite a feat these days for an unarmed plane! Although I am one to talk, I got a freaking ARCOM in 1998 for after killing 7 T-80s, taking a hit on my tank, doing self aid and buddy and on my loader, dismounting and then with my loader working our way behind an 8th T-80 and destroying it with AT-4s then killing the crew of a BRDM AT-5 with our M-4s. Of course this was all at NTC using MILES gear. If you think I'm going to do that crap in a real situation, I'll sell you a beach house in Arizona.. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
