I'm not big on the squid stuff, ;) , but I am really diggin' this A-5b.

Darned beautiful model, and hella fun to drive through the sky!

The version I have doesn't even have a readme.txt, so I don't know who to thank.

It is an excellent bombing platform...

This is a great aircraft. Fist of the Fleet has skins for it.(http://skyhawks.combatace.com/)

Also there is the RA-5C avaliable at Check5 I believe. One issue with the A-5B though, no arresting hook that works. I can't use it on the carriers!

The plane was an invaluable recc bird in Vietnam. I would be surprised if YAP hasn't used it!

While not a perfect fix (probably lacks the visual for the tailhook), you can add a vitural one. btw, something similar was done for the FJ Fury as well.

in the MissonData section, at the top, add this:

CarrierBased=TRUE

in the Fuselage section, add:

SystemName[008]=Tailhook

in the LandingGear section, add:

[Tailhook]

SystemType=ARRESTER_HOOK

MaxDeflection=60.0

Retractable=TRUE

DeployTime=2.0

ModelNodeName=tailhook

HookArmLength=2.16

AttachmentPosition=0.0,-3.59,-0.79

again, this is an imperfect fix at best. The hook data was 'borrowed' from the F-4J. The arm 'might' be a little short, and defenitely too far forward. But if it works....

Try that and let us know

You know, I always wondered how much North American used the development knowledge gained in the XF-108 Rapier project to make the A-5. The planforms and general size would have been similar.

Anyone want to make a F-108? :)

It's not such a blasphemy, throughout the late 60's North American offered modified Vigilante to the Air Force as an interceptor, culminating in the early 70's with a version adding a third reactor and Phoenix missiles.

You know, I always wondered how much North American used the development knowledge gained in the XF-108 Rapier project to make the A-5. The planforms and general size would have been similar.

I'm planning to use A-5 model with some FM and avionics changes for F~108 escort fighter to take out from long range interceptors that might come high up to harm NGHENGO's upcoming B-70 model (why would somebody want to do that?). NO GUNS. Here I hung 3 missiles, AGM-78 3D models but they *look* like a decent long range pre~Phoenix Ussian air-air missile.

Using TK's F-105 cockpit -- its pretty dense -- with a kinda neat change, I cut and pasted the tape numbers, shifting to readings from 1.4 to 3.4 (it hardly turns at Mach3, excellent!!). 69,000 feet above Lake Baikal, a place where you dont' want to slow down in the weeds at 30,000 feet to play gun fight.

img00038-2.jpg

Also made these changes to F-105 cockpit file

[AMI_Mach]

Type=MACH_NUMBER_INDICATOR

NodeName=AMI_Mach

MovementType=TEXTURE_V

Set[01].Position=0.157

Set[01].Value=1.4

Set[02].Position=0.937

Set[02].Value=3.4

Another view, from 60km ... game paused while taking several camera positions...you see why I'm not too worried about having the right model. Nobody actually would see a F-108. The ultimate visual stealth is speed and altitude, Unfortunately, TK allows defining of altitude where contrails start, but not end, and there generally should be no contrails up at 70k feet. So to take out contrails for high aircraft, you have to take them out for all aircraft. It took about a year or two before the PVO brass accepted the pilot reports of U-2s -- about 1956 one MiG-19 pilot was punished for insisting on seeing an unreachable aircraft high above his own max altitude -- so I assume no contrails are generally found at very high altitudes. Otherwise many people on the ground would have seen the U-2s, while Gary Powers and other U-2 pilots spoke of looking through the belly periscope to see dozens of interceptor contrails far below. So I'd love for TK to allow setting both min and max heights for contrails.

Contrails may happen at high altitudes. The U-2 had a rear-view mirror expressly for that purpose--to see if one was being generated so the pilot could do something about it!
