Oy there mates! Air Mechanic Allen Bunter 'ere, but me friends calls me Buntie, (I'm the one on the right in the tin type, I am). Our good old Wing Cap'n Daddy Elder said it might be nice ef you fine gents what was to be flyin' with the Number 3 'ad yer own little personal what-not painted on the fusies of yer kites, and bein the arteests what we are, we'd consider it an 'onor ef you'd allow us to work that up for you. You just gives us the picture of what you want inscribed and me an my mates 'ere, we'll take care a that right and proper. Oh cor! Where's me manners! This 'ere is Mutton off me starboard, and that's Smilin' Billy aft. We been servin together since the Dardanelles we 'as. Best blokes you'll find anywhere, pulled me arse from the fire on more than one occasion I can assure you. Anyways, you Sirs lets us know 'bout them pictures and emblems.

I think it might be a good idea for Olham and RAF Louvert to maintain seperate non-flying personas for the purposes of command (have seperate ones for your flying pilots), to safeguard the RPG continuity?

Siggi is right on the above point. Olham the skin is very good. I too like the orange and black band. No you cannot get the wingmen to drop ordnance without commanding via TAC. Me, I'm a cabbage man. White, green or red. Pickled, fried, boiled or sour. Herr Olham in Paris they have the skirts, no? I'm just catching up to you excited young fella's.

For what it's worth, I like the orange/black stripes on the DFW also. It's a nice skin, and not too Bavarian-looking...yes, highly reminiscent of turnips.

Hi all,

 

Just came across this thread today as I've been away from OFF for awhile. I lost interest mainly due to the lousy view system but I just ordered my Trackir 5 and it shipped today, should have in a few days. Anyway I was wondering if I could still get in on this sounds fun.

Nice team of artistic mechanics, Lou - they look really friendly guys

you will have many a beer with, I'm sure.

 

The idea of having two RPG characters for the Squadron leader and the Staffelführer

sounds good and reasonable to me. Those two alter egos can have their flaming war,

while we both could fly as normal Leutnant like everybody else, Lou.

Just got back from an extended work week and spotted this thread. LOVE the idea siggi. Wish I could transfer my entire Virtual-sqn over to the excellent site you've created, but I'll settle for enlisting just one. grin.gif

 

I haven't had a chance to read up on the entire topic (again out the door for work) but it looks like a winner! Sign me up for the British!

Oh yes, Buntie, Mutton, and Smilin' Billy are true Rembrandts when it comes to aeroplanes. In fact, they've been working on my personal bird just this afternoon.

I say olde Boy, yes Commander RAF, I finally was able to get out of the office for a bit, and now want to do a bit of flying. This instruction at the Farm has been a little dreary. So, I hear the Hun are up to no good, well, Captain Dick Richards reporting for duty Sa! Give me my post and I will surely be there on time. Oh, and is it the Strutter we're flying? Haven't been in one for a few months, no matter though, we'll sort it out.

meine herren,

 

first of all i'm proud to have the possibility to join our new formed aquadron.

the time in the air is going to be tough. a living pilot, doing his duty is 100 times more precious than a dead hero.

 

DICTA BOELCKE

 

1.Try to secure the upper hand before attacking. If possible, keep the sun behind you.

you can only secure upper hand when you avoid getting surprised by the enemy at any costs. so keep your eyes open all the time. don't only look for AA but look for specks. AA is a good aid, but not everywhere everytime.

 

2.Always continue with an attack you have begun.

in my experience it works better to hunt down one enemy at a time (while always keeping your eyes everywhere. very important. no fixation!!!), than spraying bullets around, trying to wound as many enemies as possible. sound unlogical maybe, but this will result in rule 8. you are one part doing your job, not the part who wins the war alone.

 

3.Only fire at close range, and then only when the opponent is properly in your sights.

nothing more to add

 

4.You should always try to keep your eye on your opponent, and never let yourself be deceived by ruses.

ruses in BHAH are for instance the prey, evading your attacks, while other enemies, or even whole flights have time to attack you while you are distracted.

eyes everywhere! no fixation!!!

ruses are over battlefields or enemy territory when the enemy goes down to low altitude. never follow them. it will only lead you to a hell of bullets from the ground. see the enemy another day. no fixation!!!

 

5.In any type of attack, it is essential to assail your opponent from behind.

when hunting two seaters. try to dance form one side to the other all them time while shooting. if possible, try to kill the gunner first. the enemy gunner has to slowly adjust to your position. works also against bristols.

 

6.If your opponent dives on you, do not try to get around his attack, but fly to meet it.

never ever try to dive away an opponent. if you want to lose altitude to escape, then make hammerheads, immelmanns, let you spin down, do any manouver you can perform. you will eventually lose altitude, but never dive straight, no matter what your instinct says.

 

7.When over the enemy's lines, never forget your own line of retreat.

in small words, know when and where to run when disadvantage. it's better to leave 5 minutes too early than 5 seconds too late! don't wait to the moment you are in disadvantage but try to sense the moment before. listen to your guts.

 

8.Tip for Squadrons: In principle, it is better to attack in groups of four or six.

Avoid two aircraft attacking the same opponent.

similar to rule 2. your wingmen will do their job as you will do yours. don't act as protector of everybody. let them do their work, otherwise you will lose. everybody has one opponent. you don't need to assign targets. AI is smart enough to take on the enemy equally.

 

for two seaters. two seaters are for other purposes than for fighting. let your escorte do the fighting. your job is more important. don't get seduced to follow an enemy or to shoot one down. only protect yourself, but don't hunt. if you see your escorte in a furball with enemies, continue your mission. it's their job to keep your back free for you. your job is a different one. don't try to help them.

Lou, you may find it hard to compete, when you only fly twice on saturdays.

And believe me: we won't drop turnips on you - the Kaiser has some fine bombs in his repertoire.

 

INSTRUCTION FOR FORWARD SHOOTING IN THE DFW

The sight is pretty bad with the engine block in front of you.

But I managed to shoot down a Nieuport 16 yesterday, don't be afraid to try that.

 

Therefor, it is quite helpful to switch to the gunsight by pressing F6.

 

That will stop TrackIR and give you a good target view over your gunsight.

To get back to TrackIR view, click F6 twice (it will switch through some instruments then

and get you back).

We may have an equal number of fliers for each side but more are welcome. One point for my german brothers is to select "always lead" in workshp. In my experience after the initial attack by scouts they fall in behind your flight of 2-seaters. The rearmost plane/crew will be most likely to be in range for the attack of the E/A. The short distance in your plane positions does make a difference. Now if you want to be the observer and exercise your guns, good for training, do the opposite of this. When you lead you are being defended by all of the observers in the rest of your flight. Hold your flight and you will maintain this advantage.
