September 18th 1965,

Well I'm here in the Hanoi Hilton now....

On an escort sortie babysitting a four ship of F-105D's no MiG's were sighted anywhere near us. I took AAA hits rupturing my fuel tank just as the F-105's dropped their payload. I tried to gain as much altitude as I can to make it over the water but to no aval. I ejected about 20 miles from the coast at around 3,000 feet. I can't help but sit here thinking, what if I waited longer? Could have I rode it out and made rescue?

Probably not. A lot of good pilots in real life are not around to tell their stories because they stayed with their a/c too long and went in with it when it crashed. You made the right choice, because according to the rules you're boy will be out of prison when the war is over, and he can fight another day in another, later campaign. At least you saved you pilot. Carter is right, you can do everything wrong and still come out alright.

And yes, Carter, thank you. The MiG killing boys from Kansas will be up again in the morning for a mission. Having learned about the capabilities of both the MiGs AND our own missiles I am sure they will be more careful or put more thought as to engaging when they can run.

New Pilot alert!! lol

2nd Lt. Ariel Keider is flying with the No. 110 squadron (Knights of the North) in 1967 Yom Kippur war. He flew his first mission this morning. I was going to start anotehr F-4 pilot, but let's get some variety eh?

Mission: Early morning strike on Cairo West A/B. Come in low and fast, hit the runway to keep fighters on the ground, clean the rest up after the runway is down.

Weather: CAVU

Flight time: approximately 1.5 hr

Flight: From Ramat A/B - Dodge flight, 8 Vantours loaded with six 500lb bombs and full load of cannons.

AAR: Take off and ingress normal. On reaching the target area I observed many fighters and bombers on the ground. I ordered my wingman to destroy the runway and the rest of the flight to strike ground targets while I went to work destroying bombers on the ground. I observed two MiG's taking off, one was destroyed by a bomb while taking off, the other made it into the air and flew away to the NW. There was a mix of TU-16's and MiG-21's in the two hanger areas. I scored multiple hits with both guns and bombs. I called for the second flight to RTB as they had expended their bombs and set my flight to strafing. When we were finished I called to RTB. Our egress took us ENE. I observed the MiG from early flying under us headed S. I called for my flight to attack it. After a swirling fight I was able to catch it in a shallow turn; it had set up behind one of my flight and was just turning slowly keeping pace with him so I was able to catch him and shoot him down with guns. The rest of the flight home was uneventful until we were 10 miles from our base. I observed around 8 tanks in a town W of the base, there was also a AAA gun site. I ordered my flight to attack. My #4 said "Roger" and then went and landed. He will be punished for his cowardice in the face of the enemy and will be recommended for grounding. My #3 made a pass with guns and took fire, then headed home. My wingman made one guns pass, he also took fire and I ordered him to RTB. While the gun was distracted by my wingman I came in low level over a hill and dropped bombs on two tanks ( I had 2 left for some reason). I observed no hits and landed without further incident.

Signed: 2nd LT Keider

Vantours are pretty cool huh? I had a good run, lucky not to get plugged by that gun though. The mission was not a success though, enemy forces were able to occupy the town there were after. Ariel will no doubt keep bombing the heck out the Arabs though!! Here are some screenies. Yeah, suck it Egypt!!! Not for real though, just for my campaign....

Cliff, I still can't get the brief / debriefs to show up for screen shots?

Another successful mission with Dramesi.

This time though, i almost screwd the pooch. coming off the target we were chased by a pair of MIG-19s. no problem there as we had the speed advantage and even we we zoomed to 20,000 we were still fine as i anticipated them burning a lot of fuel having to climb after us. The hairy part began when they turned away. I Sent Dramesi home and began stalking the MIGs so i could get into range for a missle shot. Well, as it turns out i seriously underestimated their speed and my fuel consumption.

By the time i decided to head for home, the fuel was getting pretty low so i climbed back up to 20,000 and went half throttle.

By the time i got the Weser river things were really getting critical. As it is, i barely made it.

Details to follow!

Nov/62

Didn't think it was much of a mission but someone was impressed. Went out with the CO again against a distant target. The ere MIGs in the area when we began our attacks but i figured that an easy drop and away we go. what actually happened is the i had it nice but the Major for some reason, didn't drop his bombs. Knowing the trouble we were in, i quickly ordered him to hit a radar that was on the base as i went fast and low to drag the enemy away and to allow me space to turn back.

Well, it worked out fine.

The Major got the radar and i came back in and strafed a 100mm gun just on the perfect heading to get us out of there. The Migs tried but couldn't get us.

6NOV62

Will just give a bare bones report and will fill it out later as i misplaced my mission notes.

Had a CAS mission not to far away from our base. A flight of us set out and got there EXACTly at the same time that the Reds were. We dropped our ordnance then set out at high speed for home.

A pair of MIG-17s were right on us and when it became apparent that were going to stay around for a while, i turned back and called for everyone to go A2A. when it seemed the enemy were on to me, i sent everyone home and decided to give the MIGs a hard time.

Eventually, i got them both. The first was a real Honcho and we made multiple head on passes at each other. I finally got him with a burst at such a close range that my aircraft was damaged from his plane exploding by as he passed by.

The second tried to be slick once to often. It was obvious that he was trying to break for home but i had the fuel and speed advantage. He got really predictable and that spelt his doom. He had a trick until waiting until i roared into shooting range and then pull hard and stand on his tail.

It was a neat trick but i refused the bait and kept on going until i could set up for another approach. The third time, i anticipated the manuver and as he began to climb, i pulled up brutally and nailed the MIG.

Going home was easy enough as i got them within 15 miles of the base.

You CAN get kills with a Thud provided you fight to it's strengths and avoid the MIG's prefered style.

And that's the trick to the air war, always fight your strengths!!! Nice work Carter, you'll make something of yourself yet lol.

Kidding, nice work for real.

Just a lil' update.

My Thud was shot down by ground fire while strafing an airfield so that campign is done. Started a new one flying Harriers but was shot down by friendly fire.

Am currently doing a Non-DID campaign so i can try something new and avoid burnout.

Will be back in the skies soon!

Good luck everyone!

Carter, that's a heart breaker :( Sorry for your loss.

In news, Lt's Notheisen and Hogedon were up in the air for the first time since their close call a few weeks ago, and they came back with a vengeance!!!

27SEP79

Recon the airfield near Gross Dolln.

Callsign Tampa, flight of 2

T/O: 0909

Land: 1030

WX: CAVU

Normal take off from Spangdahlem. On approach flight was intercepted by MiG-23's. I shot one down and so did LT. Hogedon. On the way by an airfield SW of the recon target destroyed an SA-9 and a Bar Lock radar. Recon of target airfield complete. Egress was normal until 20 NM SW of Gross Dulln, when we were intercepted by a flight of 2 MiG-21's. they had not shown up on radar, as they never do, so went undetected until Red Crown called them to us. I visually tracked and shot down the first one, and directed LT Hogedon to attack the second one. He succeeded in downing this aircraft. Red Crown advised us of two more bogeys, but I heard Lt Hogedon call bingo fuel so we left the area low and fast. Total for the day was 2 MiG's and 3 ground targets destroyed by me, 2 MiG's and 2 ground targets destroyed by LT Hogedon. A great way to come back to the war!!!

LT. Notheisen "Jaybird"

Also, I discovered you can reef a WW Phantom around pretty well, but there is a trick. Use opposite rudder fro what you think you should use, she turns pretty well, although she does bleed energy like an SOB!!!!

So last night I was getting pretty tired but wanted to start another campaign.

I decided on an F-111D campaign, and started the mission, but even at the load out screen my heart wasn't in it. I spied with my little eye that the F-111 has nuke bombs on it's list of weaps selections, so I took two. I took off, flew to the target area at full cruise, then popped up from the target around 6 miles away in full burner. Man my panel just lit up like I had been caught by the cops stealing hubcaps (a Rasimus reference, just finished his first book). I decided right then and there to try to toss bomb for the first time, so at 4 miles away from the target and around 9,000FT I let her rip, two nukes headed towards a fuel farm and a city. I turned tail, hit my chaff and flares, headed for the deck, cranked up the ECM, and left in a hurry. I was watching my bomb from F9, and I couldn't believe what I was seeing: MY BOMBS HAD STOPPED CLIMBING AND WERE FALLING ALMOST RIGHT ON TOP OF MY TARGET!!!!! Unbelievable! I watched them all the way down and they both landed roughly half a mile away from the tank farm. I received a mission accomplished transmission from Red Crown and went home and landed.

Well, you would not believe my surprise when I looked at my stats page and there it was, two bombs hit 4 targets directly, but there were 25 kills lol. I took out everything over there, which isn't all that surprising after you think about it. Now, the surprise of surprises: I exited the debrief screen and it went to the awards page and there it was,2nd Lt. James Link had won the Medal of Honor!!!!!!!

:drinks:

Not sure how much actual honor there is in destroying a small town and poisoning their land for 50 years, but hey, C'est La Guerre!!

It has been brought to my attention that nukes were illegal in DID, so 2nd Lt. Link will be receive a courts martial as such for his infraction on the rules of war concerning DID.

I would like to apologize for my mistake, however, it was pretty dern cool lol. I will restart the campaign without further delay. Sorry!!!

Even knowing that, I was disapointed when I saw that there wasn't the aerial nuke effect for the AIR-2 Genie nuclear rocket. It would have been cool to fly with it in the weapon bay.

Illegal stuffs are always tempting...

15th mission

Capt Sean Rosewood

87th FIS, Wiesbaden-Erbenheim – F-106A Delta Dart

11/15/68

Take off : 15.12 – Landing : 15.30

Target : Rhein-Main, Intercept

1 Su-7, 1 Yak-28

Ramrod 11 : Capt Sean Rosewood

Ramrod 12 : 2Lt Jerry Watson

Report :

Bad day!

We took off for an intercept over Rhein. Jerry Watson and I were on alert.

It was a short range flight, near from the base, so we had to be quick and we didn’t have to climb in altitude. There were too many calls at the same time so I waited for asking intercept azimuth and altitude. In fact, it was a well organized raid with bombers and fighters and we were tasked to engage the bombers from the North. We crossed the path of a lonely Il-28 and let him behind. We quickly encountered our targets, 2 Su-7, a simple turn and I was in the tail of the first. I launched my SuperFalcon, it hit the ground. I chose to launch the AIM-4Gs while Jerry was behind, both of them went wide. Then I launched the AIM-4Fs, and the second shot the Sukhoi down. I ordered Jerry to take out the second one and he answered roger. As he was flying in his 6 and wasn’t launching anything I repeated the call and he answered “two’s engaged offensive, 1 mile, low”. But he wasn’t shooting yet. I repeated once again and didn’t have any answer… I checked all around and was warned that there was a MiG behind me. I cranked the AB up and reached 700 knots. I made a large turn and went on a direct approach. There was a MiG on port (maybe the same?) but it didn’t engage me while I made the approach.

The mission wasn’t really successfull. The second Su-7 dropped his bombs over Rhein and 2Lt Jerry Watson was reported KIA. I feel responsible but don’t know what went wrong. Later, I was told that one of my AIM-4G did shot down a Yak-28 Brewer. This guy was flying ahead of us and was hit by one of my missed shots. That’s good news, but what if it had not been a Yak?

Looks like i'm back in action!

The Squadron was moved up to the front after spending time doing air defense in the UK. I seem to think that the higher powers are overly optimistic but orders are orders.

In this first scrap we got an intercept not too far away from base. However, the weather was horrible and we eneded up in a swirling dogfight from ground level to 12,000ft. Personally i am disapointed even though we accomplished our mission. Considering the odds, we can't be going tit for tat with the enemy. They will bury us if we countinue to at such an exchange rate. I'm really sorry about LT Boyer crashing during the fight. He was a fine Interceptor pilot but obviously was found short when he had to dogfight.

I managed to get two of the kills. Came up on a MIG-17 so fast that i could only just switch to the gunpod before i overran it. Also got a MIG-21 with an AIM-7 that was totally occupied by chasing someone who was running for it. That made him predictable and an easy set up.

All other missles missed. Damned if the AIM9s can't keep on a hard breaking target.

Better luck next time i guess.

16th mission

Capt Sean Rosewood

87th FIS, Wiesbaden-Erbenheim – F-106A Delta Dart

11/16/68

Take off : 15.30 – Landing : 16.36

Target : Alt-Lönnewitz, Sweep

1 MiG-17

Ford 11 : Capt Sean Rosewood

Ford 12 : 2Lt Kelly Wells

Report :

Major Howerton told me to follow the orders from tactical control because when Jerry Watson was shot down yesterday, I’ve already received the RTB call and have decided myself to carry on with the pursuit. It doesn’t make me the culprit about the loss of the pilot and his jet fighter but I was the flight chief. 2Lt Kelly Wells is my number two and I know that it is some kind of test, I must bring back that guy with me safely.

Sweep over Alt-Lönnewitz, we’re going to hunt them over their lines.

I was climbing just after take off when I noticed an Hercules flying low. It’s not the first time, I have to pay attention to them to avoid a collision.

We reached way point 2 and were tasked to engage some bandits 50 miles ahead. Set a course, had a lock on the scope, and then “SAM launch! SAM launch!” Told Wells to break up and made a vertical dive from level 20 to the deck, full AB!

After I’ve leveled at 500 ft, I tried to re-lock on the bandits and I made a big mistake! I got a lock, told Wells to join up and pushed hard to catch up the bandits. Something was wrong, we were heading to South-West, while the bandits were 50 miles to the North before we broke up… I asked to control who were they? They were Dagger flight, Air Force F-4 Phantoms. F…!

We made a u turn and started once again a research. Hopefully, I located a bandit, had a lock, and launched an AIM-4F (no heat seekers in the weapon bay today). As the bandit was hit by the missile, I saw that the pilot ejected successfully. I thought “Winner but not killer”, if the guy survived…

Guided by the control, we pushed a bit further to the North but I gave up because of fuel consumption. We headed back to the base, knowing that my mistake had surely made the mission failed. We landed without problem, and I must recognize that 2Lt Kelly Wells had a very professional behavior on this mission, obeying the orders with a total mastering of his plane and a strong sens of responsibility about his duty. He was a perfect wingman today and deserves to be chosen as number 2 for combat missions over enemy territory. That wasn’t what I was thinking 3 days ago!

I failed to post for a while since my F-4 pilot was shot down and killed by a MIG-17 and so to avoid burnout i started another campaign flying F-86s, but it didn't hold my interest for more than two missions.

Looking back on the past, the most enjoyment i ever had was flying Spads in WOV. So here i am again. The goal is to fly two complete tours and break Jonathan Sykes' records and stats.

I will begin tommorrow after i get home from work.

PS- Go get em' Cliff! Show those Migs what you can do in a 106!

Nice!! I am pullin' for you then Carter!! You have motivated me to start a WOV campaign too, just not sure which one yet. I have been reading a few books about the F-105 guys, so maybe that one. I have new skins for the F-4C and I want to use them, and I am in love with the A-6 still lol, too many planes it seems, but you know we complain when there is not enough. Oh well!!

He's the ThirdWire DID champion.

What about holding in aircraft G limits ? For example Mirage IIIC normal level is 5, when it's 6 in reality plane would suffered unrecoverable structural damage, and MiG-21 normally can operate at 8. I'm always truing to be in those parameters - adds a challenge

Well, I just had a great mission.

2nd LT. Dave Skelton is another of my new DID campaign characters. I was just running a mission this morning and not thinking too much about the details when I went on it. We were bombing an oil storage facility, and it turned out to be fairly clean as far as AAA goes, one auto gun and two small caliber machine guns. We leveled the facility and headed home. On egress I shot a MiG down with a fast cannon pass; I was surprised to have hit it and thought an F-100 had actually finished him off, but I got credit for it in the debrief. As we passed another airfield I heard the report of bandits in the area, so I started looking.

Sure as, well, sure lol, there was a MiG 17 following us at 2 miles. I called for my wingman, 2nd LT Hewes, to attack. As he broke, the MiG followed him so I rolled opposite to bring myself on his 6. I fired a Sidewinder within parameters, but my wingman broke to avoid the attack, as the MiG had pulled onto his 6. I lined up for the 2nd Sidewinder and let it rip from around .9NM's, and it apparently locked onto my wingman (it said so in the debrief, I fired at an F-105). The missile flew formation with the MiG, then overtook him and went after my boy, but fortunately they can't turn even with a Thud lol. I got close and pulled the trigger to gun him down......nothing!!!! So here I was, sitting on this guy's 6, pretty as can be, no friggin' ammo?!?!?!

My wingman is getting shot at, so I need to do something. I did what Jack Ilfry did in Africa when a BF-109 was plugging his best friend and he had no ammo: I rammed him. My plane immediately went to pieces, and you couldn't tell who owned which part of the flaming mess except for the hulls of two broken birdies. I bailed out and was hospitalized for my troubles. I was amazed that I had not been captured as it was more or less over their airfield lol.

Doesn't that deserve an MOH?

G´day Bruces and Sheilas,

Well its a new campaign now that I have retrograded back to SFG/WOE as my laptop has some problems with SF2 e.g. not enough room on the hard drive... So I have decided on a Campaign with a Difference I am using the rather interesting but nevertheless excellent Timor Mod from A-Team Skunkworks...

Pilot is Bruce "Bush" Arnold

RAN flying A-4Gs of HMAS Melbourne 805 Squadron 1975.

Midshipman Bruce has been welcomed aboard the old Girl. After my first Carrier Quals we had been at see about a week when we where advised that Timor had been invaded and that we along with others of course where to go to her aid. The enemy was Indonesia who had a formidable array of weapons to throw at us from Badger bombers to Mig-21 fighters along with SAM´s. Anyway the Admiral advised that from this date on we would have a 4 ship cap above us at all times. I drew the lunch time slot and dutifully took off about 45 minutes into the flight we where advised that we had 2 inbounds at 25000ft doing 320knots... We where directed to intercept and as you could imagine 100 miles to intercept wondering what you may come up against. Our targets turned out to be a pair of Badger bombers who as soon as we came within one mile opened fire on us which could have ruined my day as I was the unlucky one to do the close inspection and I was just reaching down for my camera to photo them for the int boys!!! Instead I switched the Master Arm on and fired my guns as the 2 sidewinders would have taken too much time to heat up so to speak... I got lucky hitting the lead Badger with 20mm and watching it then tumble from the sky... the other Badger was lucky we all fired at it from long range with Sidewinders as the Badger was spewing out 23mm everywhere... not safe to get within a mile I was thinking... Anyway after the Sidewinders where fired we where ordered back to base as all of us where near bingo fuel. So here I am a shiny thing and I am the only one with a kill!! Turns out the other Badger was intercepted by the RAAF in their go faster jets Mirage III to everyone else...

So looks like its going to get warm out here East of Timor...

G´day again...

2 A-4G Rockets Rockeyes and 2 Aim-9B´s the last ones why dont ask me...

Well after that taster... straight in to do some ground work... me and my wingie where tasked with Flak Suppression... Not my favourite I will admit but hey someone has to do it might as well get on with it and enjoy it...

Anyways take off and form up which was nice and smooth nice clear skies with not a lot to worry about. The advantage on the roll in was we had a hill to cover our approach... Climb up and dive over 3 miles downstream hit the guns and out... Oh the best laid plans and all that... coasted in at 500ft staying out of the way of Mr SAM... this was followed by some screaming round the mountains... with my wingie singing "She´ll be coming round the mountains when she comes Yeeehaaaa..." Anyway shortly after this we realised we where now a 4 ship!!! Now how did that happen??? The glint of silver gave them away they where Mig-21s... They where looking good I will say with the red flash down the fuselage... The second of the pair dropped back and fired an Atoll at me which I evaded easily and my wingman took exception by dropping his air to ground ordnance and taking off after the Mig-21 still singing his head off... Thus the Migs distracted allowed me to get back to job in hand and I screamed over the last mountain 500knots 500ft and prepared to drop my rockeyes followed by a follow up with rockets and guns... rockeyes came off silencing a twin 23mm and a large calibre gun all the while there was smaller tracers flying about... away I screamed round another mountain and to attack from a different direction only one problem I was up against 3 multi barrelled guns and a couple of large calibre guns hey ho... in we go... Went in firing my rockets hitting a everything else but the guns who hit me a few times but the jet was still flying no red lights up and over and unleash the last of my rockets killing a big gun and got hit again by the small guns as I silenced one of the smaller guns... My wingman was on his way home so I decided to follow out of ammo and with a shot up bird... when one of the earlier Migs came to play only one thing for it take him on a tour of the mountains at low level and high speed. He got the message and went home, I couldnt turn fast enough to fire a Sidewinder so I brought them back to the boat...

20 holes in my Jet!!! from 14.5mm and 23mm :yikes:

Oh and the boss thought it might be a good idea to get me a medal... One times Distingushed Service Cross and they pay me to do this I am trying to work out who gets the better deal!!!

Been 3 weeks since any decent flying that I seem to be on fire tonight 2 more sorties...

G´day again...

Cap

4 A-4G 4 Sidewinders G Models

Okay now it gets fun... Those pesky Migs which I had problems with earlier well we got the chance for some payback... we where sent to patrol over some friendly shipping and 4 Mig-21s come cruising out at 5000ft and where up at 15000ft when the Radar guys give us the steers perfect, right onto them. The Migs came up and we went down he went that way I went this way oops no hand signals on the text... Anyway Mig 1 went down in a face to face shoot out he was trying to gun me and me him and I got lucky took his port wing off and out he pops to get a view of the dogfight around him. Number 3 shouts out hes got one... and I clear number 4´s tail so thats 3 the fourth though took some time to take down but he died as I put the last of my gun rounds into his cockpit game over we checked out the ships and headed for home... After we land the boss drags me in again oh sh!t what did I do this time... Turns out I get the Distingushed Service Cross... 3 Sorties in and I have all the medals I will ever need...

Sortie 2...

Strike

2 A-4Gs Mk-82 Aim-9B

Our orders are to hit a runway so off we go again. This time our major threat was ground fire as we had no suppression guys with us... You know the USN sends 60 jets of 1 Carrier and all we have is 18 for everything!!! Anyway I go in to drop and nothing comes off the bird but number 2 drops his bombs across the runway. So I turn back for another run diagonal though and overshoot but I take out a whole bunch of helo´s on the pan so at least they didn´t go to waste... Then it was time to head home for a few cold ones before tomorrow...

G´day Bruces and Sheilas

Well another 2 sorties...

First sortie Airfield Strike to take out the control tower.

2 A-4G load with Mk-82 Snakeyes (1 Jet) Mk-20 Rockeyes (1 Jet) 2 AGM-45 (1 Jet) Rocket Pods

Briefed that we would be covered by a Flak Suppression flight and they give me a pair of Shrikes do the upper ups know more than they are saying anyway we are 60 miles off shore for this task so fuel will not be a major issue. Both jets are heavy on ordnance. Take off into the clear blue sky was easy enough headed in over land to attack from a different direction from the flak suppressors. Popped of a mountain ridge and was painted by a Radar so I fired a Shrike and got a hit out of it turned out to be a Bar-lock radar. Ordered my wingman to take out the ZSU-57 protecting the tower while I bomb the tower. Wingie takes out the gun with rockets while I place 2 Snakeyes into the building and join the demolition club with some style... we then both go to town on the Airbase as the Flak suppressors turn up and start subduing the guns I fire my last shrike at a ZSU-23 dont want to tangle with a shilka if I can help it. After rocketing, bombing and a strafing we both head for home undamaged... The base was burning fiercly even what looked like a Museum setup of 3 P-51´s...

Successful sortie all round. Oh looks like I am now a Member of the British Empire... bloody pommies

Sortie 2 for the day... Lt Smithson was shot down ...

4 A-4G 2 Sidewinders each

Ordered to intercept a flight of bombers turns out the bombers where 8 T-33´s I managed to bag one with a Sidewinder when 8 Sabres come down out of the Sun no warning but their first pass was a bad one and turns out they lost their leader as one of the Sabres pancaked into the sea at about 700 knots or so!!! Anyway after that it was shoot at anything our advantage was that the T-33 wanted to try and kill us as well !!! Now its getting dangerousmy wingie cleared my tail with a good Sidewinder shot taking a Sabre out of the fight. I latch on and get a quick burst off and hit a T-33 knocking him out of the sky as the fight drags over land and the local Army chaps get in on the act which made it interesting as they fired 2 Bloodhound missiles and each one bagged a T-33!!! The fight went back out to see where I fired my remaining sidewinder which decided it didnt want to explode so it went for a trip elsewhere... My wingie then nailed another Sabre with guns... While I was dealing with another Sabre which dutifully died... It was about this time 3 Sabres had ganged up on Smithson and shot him down... I went after one Sabre got him dead to rights pulled the trigger and all I heard was the dead mans click... I was out of ammo and missiles we forced the Sabres and T-33´s after us over the army base again to give them some more target practice... but they declined and turned for home... So we did the same minus one Lt Smithson ...
