Moxie is an old amaerican saying meaning to me: guts, courage, that "something special" or toughness. Today in our course lingo we my say "balls".

Well...I'm sorry guys..but the only reason I can see why these women took to flying is

a) They could'nt get laid

b) They were the 'butch' ones in a Lesbian Relationship

c) They were trying to get away from Sqdn Cmdr Lord Flasheart!

Well, at least none of them needed to fresh up their flavour with SPITFIRE beer,

like some people I know...

Hold on there Olham  , discussion (howsoever chauvinistic) about women is all very well but don't bring a fine bitter into the argument. Besides, after several pints of Spitfire even the first picture of Ms. Beinhorn (which really doesn't do her justice) would seem that of a goddess.

Okay, I never tried that beer - but if it's as good as the fighter of the same name,

it would be nice to continue our debate over a couple of pints of it.

Haha! Rickitycrate, I just noticed your new signature!

Pancho Barnes was probably one of the most interesting woman flyers to have ever lived.. a stunt pilot, flyer in the movie "Wings" friend of actors and actresses and astronauts, she lived a full and reckless life. One of the computers at Nasa even has her name on it. "The Happy Bottom Riding Club" her air field and Oasis in the desert was notorious for the parties given by her "stable" of girls and her own hosting of her guests.

Here's Hollyweird's version of Pancho:

And here is the most flattering photo I could find of her in real life:

Here's a good bio on her (click)

Stumbled across another bit of trivia regarding women pilots. Bit off topic, but only just...

You know in the film Tora, Tora, Tora, there's a female civilian instructor who finds her lesson interrupted by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour? Well, that was real. Her name was Cornelia Fort, and she returned to the mainland later to join the Women' Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron, as the name suggests ferrying military aircraft, and sadly becoming the first female service aviator to be killed when her plane collided with another. (The collision wasn't her fault).

Looks aside, the history of aviation is dotted with gutsy young women, often giving their lives as duty required, but rarely given a level playing field with us men.

Over Stalingrad in WW2, the Polikarpov Po2 biplanes flying harrassment bombing raids were often piloted by women. The Po2's top speed was less than 100mph, slower than many WW1 aircraft, and often they switched off the engine to approach in silence so there was no warning. The Germans had lots of names for the aircraft, sewing machines, the duty corporal, and such like. (Need to read Beevor's Stalingrad again...) but the women pilots were called Nachthexen, or night witches. The 588th Night Bomber Regiment was the most decorated unit in the Russian Air Force.

Olham, that sig came from a strange interaction in the Aerodrome Games/Sims forum. I was told I could not have an opinion about OFF because I had not tried some other sim. Yep, I'm out there pimpin' OFF.

Tom Cruise should have played Pancho IMHO.

Why do they all look like up and coming East End Boxers or Cage Fighters? (the Russian one looks like she would last at least six rounds with Mike Tyson....perhaps took time off from her Russian Olympic Powerlifting Career)

I am surprised that the Human Race continued to thrive during the 20's and 30's if this lot were the only skirt on offer!!

WOOF WOOF

This is my idea of a female pilot or two! (ok, so they are possibly posing Porn Stars in reality...but I can dream.......

If you type in "female pilots ww2" in Google picture search, you get these and many more.

And if they don't look like models - well, they weren't. They were pilots.

Joking aside!...I have the utmost respect for the Female Pilots of those early years!..In a sexist, male dominated workplace, they had to be twice as good than their Male counterparts to even get an opportunity to fly at all!

(and the 'Ferry pilots' who were female, delivered Spitfires and Hurricanes to RAF stations during the Battle of Britain, to free up Male pilots to fly in Combat, are of particular note...and my respect goes to them all.

Maybe not the prettiest, but possibly the most dangerous was Lidya "Lilya" Vladimirovna Litvak, the "White Rose of Stalingrad" who died in action with a final talley of 12 solo and 3 shared victories. So beware Widow.....some of these ladies have a real sting.

This search produced several good links with a lot of information: My link

Indeed, Widowmaker.

Okay, here is an Australian for checkSix, and a Kiwi lady to tease him.

(Jean Burns, Amy Johnson, Jean Batten).

And a (cute) Chinese jet fighter pilot.
