Realistic Shootdown

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone!

Is it possible a way to make more realistic the air and ground killings? i mean, is not realistic to shootdown a plane in one shot... anyone knows how to make to shootdown a normal plane with (20mm) 5 to 8 hits on wings... or 10 to 20 hits on fuselage... or 5 to 8 hits on engine? also to ground killings like Tanks, AAA's, Oil Tanks, etc...

Hello

in the data of the plane add armor like this

[AircraftData]

DestroyedModel=P-51D_Destroyed.LOD

DestroyedEffect=VehicleFireEffect

DefaultArmorType=STELL

DefaultArmorThickness=10

What are you going by to determine what should be "realistic" or not?

For a start if you are talking about cannons like the M61A1 you have probably never fired only 1 round - even the shortest burst you can muster is probably around 10 rounds - even if you only see 1 tracer.

MiGs blowing up after a short burst of cannon fire - very realistic if you go by actual Israeli pilot accounts.

btw one 20mm cannon shell in the right place like a spinning jet engine and its finished - any idea the damage they cause!

I agree with MigBuster. I mean just look at those things! Now imagine that big as bullet hitting a spinning turbine or something else inside the jet. Arent the rounds incendiary aswell?

Good points fellas, the 20MM is a cannon shell so it explodes on impact. That is why the Germans in WWII used them against bombers as a machine gun round wasn't cutting it.

yes you are right in most cases i think

but on the other hand a bunch of planes took 23mm direct hits over north vietnam and got back to home.

very impredictable.

One issue is ammo weight, namely, what fraction of that is the actual explosive charge. Taking, say, the GSH-301 into consideration, the manual says that the standard HE round for that weapon weighs in at .832 kg, with a .39 kg projectile weight, and a .25 kg explosive charge. Now, the SF2 game engine has two listings. Ammo weight (which probably the weight of the entire round), and warhead weight, which is the weight of the explosive charge. Projectile weight seems to be missing, and that effects both ballistics and damage modeling.

Another issue, is warhead type. The most commonly used A2A load for example, is an armor-piercing incendiary (API) round. The SF1 and SF2 engines all assume that one is using high-explosive rounds, and do not have provisions for anything else.

And finally, we have damage modeling. 99.9999 percent of the models out there, do not have the multiple hit boxes (and the damaged/destroyed parameters) defined to the degree necessary to give one the amount of realism that you may be seeking.

And don't forget that ALL the Red Air birds are designed for AI only usage. We've tweeked them to player flyable.

And they really don't have any armor whatsoever. Just look through their data inis, and compare them to their Western counterparts (like Fishbed/Fresco vs Phantom/Thunderchief). Translation: they're meant to be targets.

64mm of glass behind the pilot isnt' going to stop anything larger than 12.7. Whereas you have 12mm of steel bottom/left/right/rear on the F-4E. That JUST the cockpit armor -- not even talking about selfsealing tanks and the armor around them (which the Red Birds lack)

Most ammo, 20mm and above, has been 'explosive tiped' since WW2. Most ammo below that is just a "slug"

Admittidly, armor values on 90% of the AFV are way below consertive.

In the Giant Book of Modern Combat Aircraft (or something close to that, its from the early 80s) it had several sections on various aircraft. In the F-16 section, it talked about the M61 20mm cannon. Using a MiG-21 as the target, in a 90 degree plan view, the MiG would be hit 4 times, spread out over the length of the jet. Reading stats from the game, a aircraft can be downed from one hit. And it doesn't appear to be always in a critical area. IMO, this could use a slight tweak.
