Has anyone been closer?

And can you say very specifically when its not coming out since you can't say when it is?

The return of the A-6A?

How can you have VOW2 without Flight of the Intruder....

TK canned the A-6 I believe because it was a pure bomber. You drop your bombs, and you're done. No gun, no AAMs, just get to the target without dying and then get out without dying. Sure, some people like that, but more people prefer either a pure fighter engaging air targets or, ideally, a fighter-bomber that can do both. Considering it takes just as much effort to make an A-6 as any other plane, he felt it was a better use of resources to make the more versatile planes as flyables instead. I can't fault his logic, just his lack of resources.

However it is in there an an AI plane and if you have the 1st Gen series, just grab the cockpit from that and you now have the A-6 flyable in SF2:Vietnam.

Lol. all true. I've become used to flying the Thud, when I rarely use the gun at all. A2A opportunities rarely arise, and if you hang around to go A2G with the gun its usually a short mission.

I also have a history of playing DID Tornado, and even F15 III, where like wise getting the bombs on target was your sole aim.

So the lack of a gun never bothered me.

In the VOW1 some of the A-6 missons are at night. A2G with a gun would be pretty hairy at night!

I remember installing (some time ago) the Flight Of The Intruder anniversary cockpit available here at CA. It was very nice and detailed. How does it compare to the stock WoV A-6 cockpit?

I've done some A2A with the Thud, and while it's risky it's very rewarding if you succeed! It's like the A-10 in that regard, where I've gotten several gun kills by luring MiGs low and slow.

I've actually got some 3rd party A-6 cockpit in my SF2 install, I forget which, and fly it from time to time, but I was just referring to the fact that TK decided not to invest in an SF2-updated cockpit for WOV2 and relegated it to the status of an escorted plane mostly.

Honestly, with a plane like that where all you can do is drop bombs I'm more inclined to want to go the study sim route since the avionics recreation becomes half of the fun. With TK's casual avionics implementation, I'll admit I never spend that much time flying the A-6 either. I've spent more time with mod F-111s, actually, since at least they have AB and go real fast.

Actually, with the correct implementation of avionics for precision bombing, flying strike missions in the A-6 becomes quite fun

Not sure on that - would put the Razbam pit as my fave over the old stock pit.

Pretty sure TK said the A-6A was ditched due to the investment required for DIANE.

Sorry for the rookie question but whats DIANE? and Sorry for dragging this topic off topic btw.

The avionics in games like Tornado, or F15III were great fun. Love to recreate those sims Gulf War missions, and in a F111.

From wikipedia:

The initial version of the Intruder was built around the complex and advanced DIANE (Digital Integrated Attack/Navigation Equipment), intended to provide a high degree of bombing accuracy even at night and in poor weather. DIANE consisted of multiple radar systems: the Norden Systems AN/APQ-92 search radar replacing the AN/APQ-88 on YA-6A, and a separate AN/APG-46 for tracking, AN/APN-141 radar altimeter, and AN/APN-122 Doppler navigational radar to provide position updates to the AN/ASN-31 inertial navigation system. An air-data computer and ballistics computer integrated the radar information for the bombardier/navigator (BN) in the right-hand seat. TACAN and ADF were also provided for navigational use. When it worked, DIANE was perhaps the most capable nav/attack system of its era, giving the Intruder the ability to fly and fight in even very poor conditions (particularly important over Vietnam and Thailand during the Vietnam War). It suffered numerous teething problems, though, and it was several years before its reliability was established.

FWIW - I'm sure a functioning DIANE or A/G targeting isn't the feature that will be included with this expansion pack. But it is on the top of my list for things I'd like to see. One of the things I enjoy the most in flight sims is using guided weapons that make use of visual targeting systems (Mavericks, LGB's, etc...). Simply pressing the "E" key to accomplish it just doesn't do it for me.

It "seems" (and I don't really know anything about programming) that the functionality and controls that are already in place for the A/A radar could be modified and utilized for A/G radar and simulating some sort of MFD/optical targeting...

But I'm sure if was that easy TK would have done it already.

What implementation are you talking about?

An implementation I made some time ago (already months) for the A-6 in the game. I achieved certain degree of success in recreating the funcionality of the DIANE system that allows for precision bombing in strike missions

The results are convincing and immersive (at least for me anyway) :dance2:

That sounds amazing! Are you planning on releasing it?
