Survival In the Air - Realistic Survival Settings (RSS)

Welcome, to all the OFF enthusiasts, who look to enhance their flying skills or insight into OFF Aircraft and Settings for the game. This series of aircraft flight instruction notes are geared from a pilotperspective, and are prepared totally with OFF as the predicating factor. OBD has endeavored to provide us with the most realistic Flight Model characteristics, and we look create the accompanying flight guide for various aircraft. We will also look to provide ideas on what settings that are in the OFF Workshop, or available as a download, that may enhance the realism of OFF.

Thanks British-eh.

A few (possibly stupid) questions...

I understand about skipping 'exception' missions, but 'scouting' and 'full participation' missions have me a bit confused and I could use a bit more explaination.

The weather settings (clouds, lightning, sea state etc) have me lost...I don't know were in the game settings to find any of this.

I didn't see any explaination of the 'user choice' settings given for for bullet loadout, so don't really understand if I should use 100% or the lower 'user-choice' value.

Hi there 77S,

All good questions and something I will soon address in the Sticky SIA-RSS.

It is a bit complicated, so here is the explanation. The ideal thing would be to print the SIA- RSS as reference.

Next, when you load a Mission, and are flying a Scout, the Mission that comes up is Railyard attack. Load the Mission and instead of flying to strafe that Railyard, follow the Waypoints till you get to the Front, and then Patrol along the Front looking for enemy aircraft. Do not follow the Waypoints to your target. If the Mission is given to you as approximately 75 miles, which may translate to 50 minutes in total, take enough fuel for a patrol for that long a period.

To make it even more complicated, when the OFF Manager comes on the screen and tells you the Battle of the Somme is going on , then a Push is on in your Sector, which then means that some of the Scouting Missions become Full Participation Missions. So, the OFF Manager tells you that the Battle of the Somme is on. When you load your Mission, and see that is listed in the Scouting, see if there is reference attached to that Mission, that directs you to to see the note in the Full Participation Missions (FPM) which you will then take on as a FPM, and not a Scouting Mission. Make sense? When there is a Push on, or active Offensive, then some of the Scouting Missions become FPM. Some missions will always be Scouting, such as the Scout Railyard attack.

With regards to the Weather, if you select Persistent Weather Stats (PWS) in the Workshop Settings, you will see, as the Mission loads, the PWS page come up. It will tell you what you are likely to experience in the Mission weather. If you see the Heavy Clouds, Lighting- Heavy, etc, as per the note in the SIA - RSS then you may elect to skip the mission, or be aware that the mission might be a no - go if it's raining. It's a heads up to let you know what's coming. From October until April, in most of the War years, the weather was crap and more than 35 % of their missions were scrubbed.

The Bullet Loadout offers two settings, the first one is what the aircraft were listed as being capable of carrying, and we think that that bullet load is reasonable. If you look to make it a bit more challenging, then load the lesser of the settings for that aircrafts bullet loadout. There is still controversy about actual Bullet loadout flown with, and we are trying to get more definitive answers. It seems a full load was carried for aircraft such as the Sopwith Camel doing Ground Attacks, but about 1/2 that load when doing "Contact Patrols".

Hope this sorts it out a bit?

If I am still lacking in explaining it properly, list where you actually get hung up, and we'll sort it out from there.

Cheers,

British_eh

Thanks British_eh. Very well explained. I hadn't understood that the Scout missions become FPM during a 'push'...got it now.
