Afghanistan (Modern - 2003 & Later) Terrain

 

== For SF2, Full-4 Merged -ONLY- (and/or SF2:I) ==

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS are SF2 and SF2:I, as it uses the IsraelME tileset -- the

tiles are NOT included. However, during the rebuild process I did test it with

Stary's enhanced IME tile set. Several new tiles have been added for his specific

tile set. They ARE included. But DO NOT USE THEM if using the STOCK IME tiles --

there are 'matching tiles' for the stock set, already set up to be used. See the

"To Install" for more information. (meaning: right now, it's pointing to the IsraelME.cat)

 

This is a small update/upgrade of Gepard's Afghanistan terrain, bringing it more

up-to-date "Modernish", with regards to Allied Operations against the Taliban and

other various Bad Guys ™. All airfields have been replaced with 'stock', more

Western/NATO looking, as (re)constructed by Western Forces after their arrival in-theatre.

(unfortunately, when matching the airfiled types to 'real world' types, you now

lose the ability to base aircraft needing the LARGE Runway 4 - B-52s, B-1s, etc)

 

You =MUST= have the Gepard's original terrain to install this to. You can

 

download it from the following URL:

It will be needed for the various theatre-specific GroundObjects, and Nation.ini

modifications.

 

It should also be noted, that EricJ's 'enhanced targets' ini is NOT incorporated

into this mod. Due to changes in the types of runways used now, that mod is,

unfortunately, NO LONGER COMPATIBLE with this one.

 

The "LimitedNations" and "AllowedMissonTypes" statements have been edited to more

reflect the 2003 and later timeframe (I'm sure a left out a NATO component or 2;

please feel free to add whichever country I've missed! And let me know which

ones!)

 

Remember -- this is just a small, minor overhauling. No real major changes.

Belgium, Denmark, France, Netherlands and Norway are, or were, providing air delivery service in Afghanistan, all, but France, with F-16AM, France with Mirage 2000, F-1CR and Rafale.

 

Eventually, Afghan National Army Air corp may be added if you consider Mi-35 being a worthwhile support platform in the game.

And looking at the targets in KMD it looked like an earlier build so I was able to include more (which is nice as it saved me some work). So I can still update it just now it'll be on this "side" now.

I think I put mine near 2001 or 03 but good enough for government work lol And realistically they should be at NORMAL or EXCELLENT. They're "backwards" for sure but they do know how to fight.

I test run it in merged (meaning: no fancy stuff beyond 80s) and it's nice! Tried with both stock tiles and mine, both of set have disadventages, stock pink mountains, but better overall tone, mine too green and vivid. Already tweaking my Israel tiles :wink:

The nations I mentioned actually have flown CAS, not all mentioned by EricJ, nor Poland neither Canada, did as far as I know. Germany performed RECON missions, as Italy.

 

Now, if you want an exhaustive list that include all nations that have soldiers there, the list is longer than mentioned by anyone.

Afghanistan may be set as Friendly nation, or as Neutral if you add the ANA (Afghan National Army) as Friendly, especially if you add the Taliban as Enemy.

A question. Should be no problem in using in series one, provided the changes form unicode to ansi right?

And secondary, to Wrench. In which way this is "modern"?. I mean, what forbids the use of the terrain for russian ops in the 70s? Adding a russa as "friendly nation" (or soviet, actually) should be enough.

Another thing. Taliban AAA should be.. hm well maybe Zu-23, a few toyota with guns, but no flaks and heavy sams of course. and defintely stingers and strelas. Which should be way more lethal. I tried to tweak them, specifically for this install, but I can't really make them a "threat" Any idea?. This is important for Afghan I think

(Actually I flew (VERY LOW altitude) over israel in december, from Ramat David) and I was so surprised to see how your "tiles" matched reality. Don't forget people -- this is Gepard's Terrain; he built it -- I just made some very minor tiling changes, and targets tweeks.

 

All my terrain inis are in ansi -- SF2 don't give a rats ass what format they're in. Of course, you'll have to edit/change/add the stone-age shader effects, and a few other items I removed from the terrain's data ini.

 

As stated in the readme, "modern" is defined as post-2003, and not Soviet Occupied

The use of Western/NATO style airbase. So, you'll have to rebuild the target's ini by replacing ALL of them with Soviet-style, like Gepard's WarPac bases. (also, stated in the readme. I don't know why I even bother writing them anymore....)

 

The soviet union canNOT be added as a friendly nation, as it's classed as enemy in the games nations.ini. That don't means you can't fly for them...as we all have flyable RedAir. The (puppet) Afghan AF at the time, would also be enemy, due to it's use of Soviet equipment. And as the Mujha's didn't have an air force ...well, the game needs BOTH sides to be operational, otherwise CTDs may result.

then you'll need to add them to the _types.ini, and replace every single one of the Taliwaker AD units with those. Have fun with that! If you'll look through the _targets & types ini I supplied, you'll find there are NO 'standard or garden variety' Soviet AD bases. As to EricJ's newly released targets mod, I cannot speak too, not having d/led it yet. (I'm busy dividing my time between the American Midwest and Central America)

I do read your read me. Actually this time the read me was shorter than usual.. are you getting lazy? Hence the questiosn to you. :drinks::salute:

Wrench I already have a full functional Afghan install, as I described in my post.

The only problem I am left unsolved is a more lethal stinger.

And I do always read yuor read me, and I am quite aware of how to put terrains in SF1, including the shader replacement :) . My question about the "modernisaion" was about your design choices, if there was anthigh other than the base design. In fact, I did the same and use gepard warpac base in my install. So I can have yours as "modern" perfect. Actually you are right.. most of the questions I asked are not really relevant or significatant.. :drinks::heat: , I apologise.

As for friendly soviet, it is actually possible with limited nations and nations terrain ini specific. You just need an afghan enemy nation of any kind, and not necessarily with an operational airforce. I have no CTD in this case, and in some cases I have also mixed operations with russian airplanes escorting or being escorted by western airplanes, in a very modern post-cold war style. I can't remeber if in the main nations.ini of thei dedicated isntall I have soviet=friendly . Sure it is friendly in the terrain nations ini specific and in the limited nations statements. I will check later.
