Correcting Flight Mode

Recommended Posts

I am having a major problem getting the flight mode set. The aircraft is flying in arcade mode. In other flight sims I have you have to keep you hand on the stick making slight corrections all the time. What I have noticed in SF 2 is the aircraft is flying straight and true all the time. It could fly like this for ever it seems. In Il-2 the flight sim requires flight corrections all the time. I have hunted through the manual and can’t find the correction I’m looking for. Can this be done or did I buy the wrong flight sim? Thank you for any help. waddy

have you tried options ? options>gameplay>difficulty. there is easy, normal,hard or custom.

Yes I tried Options and still the same thing. Aircraft flies stright and true. I have to be doing something worng. I must have missed something.

So you using the wing leveler I take it? And you want to adjust the trim? Is that what you mean?

a truth-seeker deserves to know the truth.

the flight model of SF series is not arcade-like, it is above average, at least.

but because of the lack of wind effects on aircraft, and the *permanent* auto trimming of control surfaces make the aircraft fly straight, so no need for manual adjustments most of the time.

if the auto trimming can be turned off, you need to trim a lot.

when you know enough about how to edit aircraft performance, you can turn off 2 of the 3 axis trimming - roll and yaw, but trimming of pitch axis is permanent.

you can think of flying an F16 with advanced computer control system even if you are flying an old A-4 in SF series.

This is a Sim Lite...and does exactly what is said on the tin...as they say....it is FUN and thats it's biggest selling point for me.

. In Il-2 the flight sim requires flight corrections all the time.

Thats not really a useful comparison unless you are flying jets in IL-2?

With single engine props you often get a constant roll in one direction caused by the engine torque AFAIK - you wont see this in jets - unless you are carrying an asymmetric loadout. Wind force and thermals etc are not simulated in SF either that I know of.

I agree with you. Maybe the SF series doesn't model all the details, but it does a great job of presenting the big picture.

What MigBuster said, don't compare single engine early '40s props to '60s or '70s jets in regards to flight behaviour.

Wind force is simulated to a degree -even clouds move constantly due to wind but you have either speed sim up waay beyound standard acceletarion settings via flightengine.ini or set hurricane winds in custom mission via txt edits

Course drift due to wind is modeled in the series. As Stary pointed out, one must run at 8x time acceleration to really notice it.

Good to know - didnt think Id ever had to correct my landing due to crosswind!

That's because by default wind has BaseWindSpeed=5 set in environmentsztem.ini, so putting higher values should add more drift and fluctuations, variables are in [baseWindSection] tab in environmentszstem.ini, to be honest I never messed with them

Try this:

Set up a mission where you have a high wind, then fly at a right angle to it, using AP in altitude hold mode.

Next, speed up the sim (to 8X), while keeping note of your indicated heading. You'll begin to see the aircraft gradually weathervane due to the crosswind.

If you want to fight the stick to go straight and level in SF2, fly Mustang. Take off can be a real pain, I still follow drunk flying squirrel trajectory most of the time. For the most of the planes in the game you must struggle not to fly them straight, but to make them turn. Yes, I'm looking at you, Mystere, with your inefficient boosters.

BTW, jet turbines are rather heavy gyroscopes. I wonder, if it's modeled in SF2 in some way. Fishbed trainee's manual mentioned that gyro effect determines the more likely direction of stall.

I do notice in the P-51 a definite 'twist' if I 'goose' the throttle...weather that is because of the gyro effect, I couldn't tell ya. My experience in high power props is limited.

The 'twist' due to the torque effect of the engine is rarely noticable airborne and only slightly noticable on the ground. But in both cases, if the engine is powerful enough to produce it, you will be more concerned with the slipstream effect making you depart your heading/the runway.

If you want to try gyro effect fly with S-199 :-)

this plane isnt flying straight and level, trust me

By my opinion you can model a lot of things in this engine.

I wish I have knowledge of the NASA aerodynamics specialist

and enough free time :-)

i wanna know how your planes are flying straight. i have three children and sometimes have to step away from the computer while its loading. if it takes me awhile to get things sorted, i may very well see my bird in a smoking pile on the ground! no granted when your paying attn to it the aircraft maynot fight you as hard as other sims, but arcades dont just crash ya w/o input

you can pause the game (not sure on hard but you can on easy/normal

He's aware of that man just that when you have three kids as he said things get pretty distracting when it loads and when he's taking care of them :good:

Sorry for reliving this old threat, but is the only one I found talking about wind. In the missione ditor you can mess up with the wind, nut I never noticed anyhting, no effect on weapons or in the FM of the planes. Is there any way to make wind affect the planes and weapons? Simulating crosswind landings would be great.

Did you say crosswinds. Try this:

[BaseWindSection]
BaseWindSpeed=4.17
BaseWindDirection=280
WindChange[01].ChangeTime=3.5
WindChange[01].ChangeChance=80
WindChange[01].SpeedAmount=25.00
WindChange[01].SpeedRate=50.00
WindChange[01].DirectionAmount=70.0
WindChange[01].DirectionRate=40.0
WindChange[02].ChangeTime=6.2
WindChange[02].ChangeChance=60
WindChange[02].SpeedAmount=27.78
WindChange[02].SpeedRate=55.56
WindChange[02].DirectionAmount=50.0
WindChange[02].DirectionRate=30.0
WindChange[03].ChangeTime=12.3
WindChange[03].ChangeChance=40
WindChange[03].SpeedAmount=33.33
WindChange[03].SpeedRate=66.66
WindChange[03].DirectionAmount=35.0
WindChange[03].DirectionRate=20.0
WindChange[04].ChangeTime=21.1

Where? On the mission text? Or I need to extract a new file?
