This is just s few things i've thought about when flying fighter missions in WOE DiD. Seeing as we've had more than a few here that are new to the sim, i thought i'd make a list of things that might help. I can elaborate on them, but this ought to get things going.

1-The number one goal is survival

2-Your wingman is of more value than you are

3-Never enter a fight unless you're sure about how to get out of it.

4-Speed is life only if you have enough fuel.

5-All things considered, forget about turning with MIGs

6-A minimum of two flights should be used whenever possible.

7-Go high and let the enemy climb up after you.

8-Do your best to keep the fight at altitude

9-Maximum range for guns should be no more than 400 meters.

10-For the most part, ignore given waypoints, altitudes and timings.

11-Be aware of the frontline.

12-Egress should be plotted as carefully as the ingress.

13-Point blank + short burst = sure kill.

14-If at all possible, seek to escape from enemy fighters at high altitude.

15-The best use of AIM9 Bs are for breaking up bomber formations.

16-Every aircraft has certain traits that can keep you alive. Learn them.

17-Look for nearby fights to get some surprise kills.

18-Think offensively even if you are at a disadvantage.

19-When in doubt, go home.

20-In a big fight, the most important thing in the cockpit is the fuel gauge.

Can you explain no. 2 for me? Are you talking in a general sense, or a specific WOX one? Because if it's the latter, I only seem to have very niche roles for my 2-man...

It's mainly due to wingmen being something of an afterthought to many people.

I value mine and it really bothers me when i lose one. I'm a big believer in building up their scores and if they make ace, i make them element or flight leads. The usual thing i do in the initial stages of a fight is get them onto the whatever enemy i choose and make it a 2V1 fight. I can't count how many times a target was downed because either i or my wingman got the enemy so defensive that one of us got a good setup for a point blank kill. Once the fight develops i give them their own enemy to fight.

So far my best wingman scored 38 kills (WOE-F15-79 campaign)He was a permanent wingman in a lead flight where every single member was a double ace!

About 7) , 8) and 14) : I very much prefer to stay low down in the weeds, shoot missiles into a clear sky and get out, because 1): let the missile do the cimbing and 2) get out of the way of SAM's and AAM's , which have one dimension less to manoeuvre and with terrain masking trouble to keep locked on.

But it's a great guide on how to fly and fight !!! :good: :good:

If you do a good micromanagement of your wingman he can be very useful. I discovered it flying the Panther over Korea. With careful use of break, cover my tail and attack my target commands I could not only keep him alive but have him save me more than a dozen times. It also allowed me to get easy kills on pursuing Mig-15s.

Off course its hard to keep an eye on him when you have boggies all over you and the AAA is after your blood, but it pays off.

Anyway, if you have a faster (F8/F4 vs Mig-17) and/or a better airplane (F-15 vs Mig-23) it doesnt matter that much. But still, caring for him and having him care for you adds some realism to those DiDs.

Hey Derk,

I've been doing some of the early campaigns so often that they are primarily what i had in mind when i was making the list.

If you don't have to worry about SARMs or SAM, going in high is the way to go. Ideally you want the the enemy climbing up to you and getting low on energy. Once they are about 2-4 thousand feet below your altitude feel free to order everyone to engage. While you have the speed from the dive, they are basically wallowing about just trying to manuever.

Your guys will get a lot of kills in that scenario.

Keeping the fight high is to simply stay away from having to deal with orientation loss in clouds and losing sight of the bogey in clouds as well as having the ground to deal with as an extra added hazard. If you go and read back through my DiD reports over the past few months, you can see just how many losses my guys have suffered from going in.

The high escape is something that is perfect in the 62 and 68 campaigns.

My number one escape method for most aircraft(Yes, it depends on the situation)is to point it towards the front, do a shallow dive to build up speed, and stand it on it's tail in full burner. Burner off at about 20-25,000ft and keep climbing until 30-40,000ft where you level off at full throttle. F-102s and MirageIIIs for example, will handily outrun the enemy at altitude. Being high up also helps with fuel consumption as well as causing the enemy to burn theirs trying to catch you. I call it "Climbing the mountain"

I even advise a climb to 20,000ft on egress for F-105s and a few other attack birds not only to ease fuel expenditure, but to give them the perch to dive back down to the deck if a MIG is closing in.

Hey Lt,

Thanks, sound advise for indeed the earlier campaigns with less worries about the missiles.

I am mostly flying missions in F 16's and that sort of stuff i.e. rather later than what you are doing. Low flying was very much the thing in Europe, reason for semi permanent deployments to (for instance) Goose Bay.

In Bosnia, Kosovo and Iraq things were more at medium altitude but under full and maximum electronic escort and protection, which afaik is not available in that form in the game.

For earlier missions in F 104's or Hunters I guess you're dead right !!:good:
