How Government Works(A Little Joke nothing serious)

Recommended Posts

I have a family member that works for the government and from time to time to I get these little emails. Now in no way am I trying to start something or say something about something or someone. Having said all of that please enjoy.

How Government Works

Once upon a time the government had a vast scrap yard in the middle of a

desert. Congress said someone may steal from it at night, so they

created a night watchman position (GS-4) and hired a person for the job.

Then Congress said, "How does the watchman do his job without

instruction?" So they created a planning position and hired two people:

one person to write the instructions (GS-12) and one person to do time

studies (GS-11).

Then Congress said, "How will we know the night watchman is doing the

tasks correctly?" So they created a Q.C. position and hired two people,

one GS-9 to do the studies and one GS-11 to write the reports.

Then Congress said, "How are these people going to get paid?" So they

created the following positions, a timekeeper (GS-09) and a payroll

officer (GS-11) and hired two people.

Then Congress said, "Who will be accountable for all of these people?"

So they created an administrative position and hired three people: an

Admin. Officer (GM-13), an Assistant Admin. Officer (GS-13) and a Legal

Secretary (GS-08).

Then Congress said, "We have had this command in operation for one year

and we are $18,000 over budget, we must cutback overall cost," so they

laid off the night watchman.

It was interesting. It's not a partisan comparison, and in my eyes it's a fair one.

Now in no way am I trying to start something or say something about something or someone.

In fact just the opposite. Its the required patriotic and civic duty to always question government, to always assume the worst about government regarding lies, fraud, and corruption, or a nation is destroyed. But be prepared to BACK IT UP, to paraquote Dave on another subject, or get eaten for lunch by free men and women. I like to think of Mr. Garibaldi's little speech to the new board of Edgar's Industries in season 5 Babylon~5.

Any organization of men can get like that e~mail...

I worked for a state transportation agency, and that pretty much sums up how they operated. They seemed to be more interested in perpetuating and protecting a bureaucracy, then in actually providing a service to the public.

Great comment and funny pic Lexx. I know politics is a really touchy subject for some people which is why I made previous statement. I've been to some sites where an innocent joke like the one I posted gets turned into a major flame war and things spiral out of control. Luckily we're all mature here (until someone posts a pic of a half naked hot chick  )

And I like Dave's comment "get eaten for lunch by free men and women"

I am proud to live a in a country where we can question things openly and your absolutely right. That's all I have to say about that....now I've got to go look up photos of chicks wearing strings...I meant bikinis.(What? I've been working all day and I can use a cold drink and hotties.)

Down here, we use to call such a critically inverted pyramid of responsibilities (50 generals to 10 corporals) "a Mexican army". Does this expression exist in English, or somewhere else?
