Remember though, there are over a billion people there and much of the nation was as outraged as you that 18 people could just walk by unfazed. Weibo (akin to Chinese Twitter) was awash with outrage at these people and the seeming dip in ethical practise recently in China. You don't need a bible to understand morale, I think the nationwide angry is evidence of this.

I don't even think that it's because it's China.

I've had first hand experience here in the UK...I was crossing a street, and misjudged the timing of an approaching car...so 'stepped it up' a bit to cross the road.

 

I did something my body didnt like, and a tendon in the heel of my foot was torn...which sent me to the deck, in spasms of acute pain...I was lying on the road..unable to get up (bearing in mind, this was in the city centre, in broad daylight)

 

As I lay their in tears of pain....several cars just drove round me....pedestrians looked at me..and carried on.

It was that experience that led me to prefer to spend my time with my Dogs, rather than the Human Race....something I have never regretted!

Sorry but the bible may be the wrong place to look for morality. I've lived in the southern USA, if you know what I'm getting at.

 

Stopping being a bunch of robotic bastards would do much more then a bible ever could. Maybe they have something in common with the northern Koreans, and don't value themselves, much less other people, and children, so it doesn't even bother them.

 

I don't know how many of them would care if they themselves died.

 

Is life so mundane over there?

 

Is it the government control? Is it the facelessness? Is it living where there are already too many? Is is fanaticism?

 

It's cruel, and it's a sign of a deteriorating PRC.

That's rough. Found a Chinese news clip, they show the whole thing. The interesting thing, the official "party" news organs are making lots of hay over this.

 

Apparently, there was another similar event with a boy (moderately injured), but with Yeu Yeu in the news, everybody rushed to stop the truck.

 

If you have a system that treats men and women, boys and girls, as if they were all disposable servants -- persons rather than souls -- you get stuff like this. Here in USSA, there is an attempt by local yahoos to pass "laws" that if you call emergency, you have to pay for it. Result: ignore an emergency when it happens. I suspect something similar here. You see stories of souls helping, and then they get sued or charged with causing the event they tried to help out with.

that with the bible was just a phrase. i was trying to say that they should rather learn morale and that an individuals life is something worth, even in this Borg-like community.

that there is an outcry now among own people is normal, since that case, which happens weekly, this time is caught on tape an the world has seen it. they are confronted with it because it's not something they have read in the (censored) paper or heared about, but seen on tape. so they are forced now to question themselves. to see something like that has a completey different impact than just knowing it's happening somewhere on a regurlar basis.

just two days ago was a similar incident. a 5 year old boy was killed by a truck (also with pics) . the driver deliberately went back again over the boys body to make sure he's dead. because treatment in hospital is by far more expensive than a single reparation of causing death. the driver jumped out to of the truck to the shocked mother, simply asking how much does she want him to pay. another source said that while the truckdriver tried to neagotiate with the mother other people run to him and yelled at him that he has to compensate for the damage he has done. only person really shocked was the mother, sitting next to the mincemeated body of her 5 year old son. that happened just 2 days or so ago. as i said, the people who live there say it is happening often and it's rather normal (and sick).

it may happen in other places too of course, although not helping a 2 year old child in agony, and just dumb looking when somebody falls from the bike or something like that is a different ballgame.

 

personally this is not a community i want to become the "worlds biggest economy blah" that's simply sick. they won't definitely get a single penny for anything from me anymore, at least as far as i can control it, since every single crap nowadays is produced there.

Lexx, there is actually a legal precedent in China, 2006, when some man was condemned to pay for the care of a dying person he had led to the hospital. The court considered that the man performed that charitable deed because feeling guilty, so was probably responsible in the accident. Besides such stupidity from the institutions, I don't think that this shameful general behaviour of ignoring dying people around has much to do with communism. On the contrary, I would consider a disturbing inadaptability of the Chinese ancient holistic mentality to our own Western individualistic, materialistic mentality. Zombis passing by fallen people feel dependant on their pods, mobiles and new gadgets rather than on an intimate code of living, dependant on their own private agendas and careers rather than on what happens around them. Bible wouldn't change that much in these people's behaviour: they would probably keep on driving fast and ignoring fallen people around, if they are late for the Mass. Still their damned own private agendas above everything else.

 

Unfortunately, I think that such a thing could happen in my damned shabby district, with somebody on the ground and 18 zombis passing by - because all of them walking drunk.

 

Creaghorn, I believe it's too late now to think about a boycott on Chinese products, which would let all of us Westerners naked assholes with bare hands, living in empty houses (damn, I couldn't say if even the cement for our houses also comes from China!). of course that i will do it, won't change anything. this video won't have an impact to the world like the tunesian student who burnt himself, and which ignited the revolutions in the arabic countries, or the asassination of the archduke 1914, although i wish it would. that everybody who produces anything there immediately moves the production to another country, or at least future productions are not going to be made there anymore. simply with knowing that people who don't value a life, not even a childs one, shouldn't get contracts to produce my product i want to sell.

that's utopic of course. i'll do it for my own concience

I think it's due to urbanization. I grew up in the boonies, and used to reside in a small town, and people would say hello and chitchat and offer help if someone was in need, but as soon as I moved to the big city I was just another stranger among strangers.

You're right of course..I know that too...but, as you get older, and tend to lose that naive optimism of youth..it gets harder and harder...especially when you see things like this story.

 

I'm moving to the Country soon anyhow...people seem to have more time to help others there.

Several reasons, but Antal Fekete has some interesting thoughts on this that are new, related to floating currency interest rates damaging businesses (excepting banks which feed on the floats). Its no coincidence that China makes most of our (USA) consumer products AND holds so much of our debt. I'll see if I can roundup ready something he wrote.

that with big cities is for sure a factor, but not as big as one might think. of course it's not that everybody greets everybody, that's normal. personally i like living in a big city. seeing new faces every day, going out for a drink or go eat and trying everytime something else. going to theaters, museums etc. but this case with YueYue is simply not imaginable for the human species. no matter how big the city is.

 

i'm croatian and my wive is turkish. we went to her hometown in turkey Izmir twice this year with our son Raphael who just turned 1 this september. Izmir has about 8 million people, that's about as twice as whole croatia has. it is really amazing how much the people there love children. everytime we went downtown or so, there came people to hug him, play with him, hold him etc. even at the airport the workers there forgot their duty and were completely focused on him. and that in a city of this size. once, when we walked home from the beach we got even escorted by 12 people, where everybody wanted to play with him etc. the little brat always had his fanclubs with him. and that was really amazing. you can imagine that in a town, although having so many million people, something like with YueYue never would have happened.

so yes, big cities are unpersonal, often unfriendly, but YueYue's case is still unimaginable and simply unhuman. she was not a victim of a cruel war. there were simply bunch of poeple of a sick community where one has no relation to the other, and that shows that it is a communitything.

City or country, maybe its a top down effect -- men and women see every day the corrupt government and Party. Communism and the new foreign debt based corporate feudalism have always treated Chinese men and women like toys. If toys get run over by the system, the system walks on by.

It is foolish to blame Chinese sweatshops for the plight of American producers using American labor. You should blame our unconstitutional monetary system that allows the rate of interest to shoot up to 20 percent and then to plunge to 1 percent.

 

He's saying...ie...overseas labour has *always* been cheaper, but not until the wild swings in intersest rates after the 1971 US gold default were businesses forced to take advantage of overseas sweatshops. Its an interesting take. Perhaps even more so than currency debasement, wild swings in interest rates cause problems for businesses' finances...while the banks profit, as Fekete notes.
