UK_Widowmaker 571 Posted December 20, 2011 Lincolnshire....I was there on Holiday about 3 yrs ago!...very flat, with appalling mobile phone coverage!...But superb Fishing, and lots of wonderful Airfields!....and indeed, where my SOE serving father, took off from on his exploits in Occupied France!...salaute! sandbagger 1 Posted December 21, 2011 . Coningsby was one of the many RAF stations and bases I visited during my three-year stay in England and Europe in the 1970's. I recall they relocated the Battle of Britain memorial squadron there some time around 1976 or so, if memory serves, (though it's serving with much less reliability than it once did). Lou . Your'e quite correct Lou - The Battle of Britain Memorial flight are based at RAF Coningsby. I live only a mile from the base and can see the BBMF hanger from my upstairs window. Strange to say this but its now routine to have the Lancaster, Spitfires, Hurricane, Dakota etc flying low over my home, especially during the Summer display season. I've also seen a flight of B17s en-route to the closed RAF Binbrook, for the filming of 'Memphis Belle'. Quite a sight to see. Boomer113 0 Posted December 21, 2011 (edited) Oddly enough Binbrook was my first posting in 1985 I was there until it closed. The nissan hut where they were setting up the party for the crew in the film was the old station library and they used the "lazy runway" for the B17's taking off.
