I got burnt out after releasing so many models in a short period of time, but now after a long hiatus, I'm getting to work in the virtual drydocks again.

So, here's an early work-in-progress shot of Russia's Kirov class battlecruiser. Each of the four ships in the class is a bit different, so I'm going to model each one separately. I've started with the third vessel, Admiral Nakhimov (formerly Kalinin). It will feature a fully layered air defense of SA-N-6 and SA-N-9 (which I can do since they're all vertical launch), the twin 130mm main gun, and of course six Kashtan CIWS each with twin 30mm gatlings.

I've already gotten all the radars working, plus the main gun, but entering in all the other weapon systems will take approximately forever.

The radar mesh tga is just a placeholder, as I've yet to start skinning the ship.

It'll be a couple of weeks (hopefully not "two weeks") before it's finished, so please stay tuned until then. I haven't gotten SF2:NA yet as my system probably can't run it, so if anyone can provide any code for new features from that game's data.ini files, I'd really appreciate it.

Nice ship. :good:

By the way, Red Banner Fleet was the name of the soviet Baltic Fleet. The other Fleets (Black Sea Fleet, Noth Fleet and Pacific Fleet) were no Red Banner Fleets. The name Red Banner Fleet comes from the order "Red Banner", which was given to the fleet for bravery in WW2.

Guns are now operational.

I can imagine when these ships were being designed. "What is this empty space on the deck, comrade!? We can't send her to sea like that. Put on more weapons!"

Hello!

In my knowledge Kalinin didn't have SA-N-9 - there was a place but the system was never mount:

Yeah, I have read conflicting information about this. Some websites say the SA-N-9 were installed, others don't mention them. I remember seeing a photo of the Kalinin/Nakhimov (well, I think it was her hull number...) with the launchers in place. Maybe it was from the recent refit?

Anyway, I'm going to put them in for now. I'd rather have the ship accidentally overgunned than accidentally undergunned. grin.gif

The SA-N-4 launchers will have to wait until the SF2:NA extractor comes out, so I can find out how multiple missile launchers are implemented. Also, every picture I've seen of the Kirovs has the launchers retracted, never deployed and ready to fire, so I actually don't know what they look like.

In the man time, though, the VLS systems are working, and all 96 SA-N-6 Grumbles are in their proper place:

I would say something about sinking feelings especially after going toe to toe with a Kiev... imagine the current setup with one of these bad boys in there its going to be a nightmare to handle... and you cannot hide with terrain looks like its going to be a case of re-writing the SEAD Manual....

Added the SA-N-4 launchers, railings, touched up some other components. Aside from a few more details, the mesh is nearly finished, so I'll start unwrapping and skinning soon.

With the new missile setup you should be able to get the Kashtan's SA-N-11's working as well.

Thanks for the support, everyone. Not sure when I'll get around to older ships, but I am planning to do a Sovremenny and a proper (fully armed) Kuznetsov at some point soon, after I update all my models to NA standard.

Speaking of which, I ran into a snag trying to update the Kirov. First, I can't seem to get VLS to work using the new format. If I put the primary VLS under the "[WeaponSystem]" part, without a gunner entry, it will work, and I think I can at least get all the other non-VLS launchers to work along with it.

Second, and much more importantly, I can't get the collision to work, so the ship is still invincible. The new GroundObjectData looks like this:

DamagedModel=

DestroyedModel=

DestroyedEffect=ShipDestroyedEffect

DamageEffect=ShipFireEffect

SystemDamageEffect=ShipSystemFireEffect

CollisionMesh= // <-- Probably the most important bit

I have absolutely no idea how the collision meshes are supposed to be formatted for objects in this game. All I can infer from the ships I extracted is that they use a separate LOD for this mesh. Pointing it at the same LOD as the ship itself doesn't work. I also tried making a separate stripped-down low-poly version, but that doesn't work. I googled around and kept trying different things until 4 in the morning last night, but I'm completely stuck. If any 3D gurus have any ideas, I'd very much appreciate it.

Good news: I got the SA-N-11 launchers on the Kashtan CIWS to work! This meas that a single Gunner can control both a gun system and a SAM system on the same mount.

gallery_33721_313_71433.jpg

So far, this ship will launch three different types of missiles against multiple targets at varying ranges. It's vicious!

I'm still having trouble getting the SA-N-9 Gauntlets to work. It seems like the new gunner and missile format doesn't like VLS. I could try to tie them in to the main WeaponSystem entry that controls the SA-N-6 VLS, but it might launch the missiles at the wrong ranges.

Yes, I'm still working on this. I'm about 1/3 of the way through texturing now. Still have to make different hull number decals... Maybe I'll provide some for the Slava and other Soviet capital ships as well.

Here's the ship intercepting ASMs with layered defenses.

That was true as long as six or seven years ago, when Sparkomatic released the first beta of the Udaloy II, and we set up the data.ini for it....right, Typhoid? :grin:

Of course, back then, you were limited to one SAM mount, but the same priciple applied, the guns and missiles on that mount shared the same yaw & pitch axis.
