My South West Africa Terrain Project

Recommended Posts

Hello,

In order to play with the TK DLC Mirage IIICZ I would like to create a new terrain... :heat:

I've chosen to mod the South West Africa region, the border area between Namibia and Angola!

My project is based on the SFP1 Desert terrain elements.

From saturday, I'm trying to obtain the famous "greenish" screen from the Terrain Editor... I've only a black screen!

I'm using the file "W020S10.DEM" found from GTOPO30 site.

What do you think? I'm following the CA terrain modding lessons.

I would like to create it to share it with you...

Best regards,

Coupi. :bye:

Hello,

I stuck just after initialising of the DEM just before the step 4/Lesson 3.

After the "importation" I've not the "greenish screen" just black... I tried Step 4/Click "View"/Click "Set Zoom Level 100%"

but I've not the mentioned " full view over the terrain"

Many Thanks Pareblue. :salute:

@ Paulopanz... cool :drinks:

What's the long and lat are you setting when you import?

If the area covers 4 grids in the GTOPO30 map, then you'd need 4 DEM files and load them in order.

Now you’ve got me all excited coupi!

I’m clueless when it comes to terrain making but I did experiment with a few African Bush type tiles a few months back.

May I suggest any of the books by the late Brigadier General Dick Lord. A must have for any info on the air war in that theater.

Theres a basic thearter map here:

Good luck & looking forward to it. :good:

... with the terrain Editor I've found this!

I've another DEM with more land (East). I don't know if it is possible to merge data...

I'm working, I'm working...

I will love to see such terrain. Let's hope you have some luck and that we can get a proper tileset for it too. Crossing my fingers!

the closest tileset would be the hated/dreaded/missing transitions IsrealME set. The farms and desert tiles would be closest; although all new mountain tiles would be needed --stock is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to purplish for the region

Good going Coupi.

Let me iterate that you don't need to find a suitable "DEM" for your map.

The DEM files, contain raw geographical data.

This is how I would go about the first importation.

Terrain Editor (TE) only works with square maps, keep that in mind.

Open up google earth or maps. Decide which part of the world you will use.

I suggest a 1000x1000km for starters. Get the Long Lat of the left top corner of the area you will map.

Check the Big world map on the GPO Site. Download the DEM files for the grids your map will cover.

Now open TE and import the DEMS, in order. I think it was Left to Right and Top to bottom.

Ordway posted some pics last year of a tileset he has as a WIP. No more news since then. I contacted him and he said is still not finished. But maybe can be a start for Coupi map?

Coupi, you can merge two DEM files automatically in TE, these must be present in the TE folder to do so, it's easy. Based on your Long/Lat input and the coverage of the DEM files, TE automatically adds info from the next one after first one "runs out"

I've named the terrain "AfricaSW", and...

... with the TE, after having merged the DEMs, I've created these files:

AfricaSW.HFD

AfricaSW.ini

AfricaSW.TFD

AfricaSW_data.ini

AfricaSW_targets_proto.ini

Peaks (Document texte)

SectorHeight (Document texte)

AfricaSW.bmp

Even with the older TE (for SFP1 Desert terrain) I can't autotexture (step 6)!

I should try with the WoI terrain elements... :dntknw:
