DecalMaxLOD=

I've never really understood this entry on a decal.ini and would like to know what it does and what different values do.

Pretty simple.

Especially on the stock aircraft there are many LODs. That means not only the model format but stand for Level Of Detail. So basically depending if it say DecalMaxLOD=3, it stand that the decals is applied till the 3rd LOD. Just look in the aircraft main INI and see at what distance each lod is rendered in game.

[LOD001]

Filename=A-4C_65.lod

Distance=100

[LOD002]

Filename=A-4C_LOD2.lod

Distance=250

[LOD003]

Filename=A-4C_LOD3.lod

Distance=500

[LOD004]

Filename=A-4C_LOD4.lod

Distance=1000

[LOD005]

Filename=A-4C_LOD5.lod

Distance=10000

"3" seems to be the average for the stock 3W birds ... anything beyond that forces the engine/GPU to work more than it should, trying to render something beyond normal visual range

Following the same line of questioning: what does the "DecalLevel=" do?

DecalLevel is completely different.

  • Level 0 is a national insignia, with the number of the decal corresponding to the numeric entry in nations.ini
  • Level 1 is a squadron insignia, with the number of the decal corresponding to the numeric entry in squadronlist.ini
  • Level 2 is an aircraft specific decal, such as a tail number/modex. This corresponds to the number you select on the loadout screen.
  • Level 3 is simply the number of air to air kills you have, and is used for kill markings.

Level=2 is also used for nose art, as their numbering also follows serial/modex/id letter sequencing
