Early F-14A Tomcat Paint Schemes: The Gulls - Part 1 v1.11

Early F-14A Tomcat Paint Schemes: The Gulls - Part 1 v1.11

This F-14 Tomcat Skin Pack is designed for the TMF F-14 Tomcat Super Pack (Any version, V1.14-1.20, or even the baseline Tomcat Pack from 2010). It represents eight F-14A Tomcat squadrons during the airframe's Vietnam-era introduction until the late 1970's (ca. 1978-1980), as the squadrons began to tone down. It is called "The Gulls" because the F-14's paint schemes early on included an overall light gloss gull gray with white control surfaces and underside, as well as very high visibility squadron markings like the F-4 and F-8 before it. I've always loved the Tomcat in its high-viz glory, and decided to compile a set of skins that represented the F-14 in its early years. The aircraft bureau numbers are included on each aircraft, and I logged them to the best of my ability; some aircraft were uncertain, so I narrowed it down to the block to find unassigned BuNo's. Any uncertain airframes, then, are at least from the proper block, and are few and far between.

These skins are valid until about 1978, the big changes over time weren't so much the colors as much as the bureau numbers of the aircraft. Some aircraft were lost to engine explosions, cold catapult launches, overrunning the deck, etc. during their inaugural cruise. Those others could have been involved in several cruises, but some may have been transferred to other squadrons and replaced with new build aircraft, so all aircraft modeled here are from the initial cruise of the listed squadrons.

This work was based in part on the Mirage Factory originals (listed in the original credits as being the work of Column5), and also some of Spectre8750's skins from the Super Pack as well, so I must thank them for providing the basis for the work. There was still quite a bit that went into making the updates even to squadrons which appear relatively unchanged (esp. VF-1, -2 and -84) to include wholly new decal sets for aircraft numbers and bureau numbers. VF-14, -32 and -41, -114 and -213 on the other hand, were done just about from scratch with the exception of VF-41's tail stripes.

The squadrons represented in Part 1 v1.11 are:

VF-1 Wolf Pack 1974-1978

VF-2 Bounty Hunters 1974-1978

VF-14 Tophatters 1974-1978

VF-32 Swordsmen 1974-1978

VF-41 Black Aces 1976-1978

VF-84 Jolly Rogers 1976-1980

VF-114 Aardvarks 1976-1979

VF-213 Black Lions 1976-1979

=============

To Install:

=============

NOTE:

This does not contain any aircraft! It is a set of skins. You must have the Mirage Factory F-14 Tomcat Super Pack or 2010 Mirage Factory Tomcat installed for this skin set to work!

=============

1. Go to your SF2 Mod Directory

Ex: C:\User\Saved Games\ThirdWire\StrikeFighters2\

2. Copy the Objects folder included in this archive over your Objects folder

3. Allow the files to overwrite. I have set up the folder structure to match the default structure of the game's mod folder (Objects/Aircraft/F-14A_74/file, and Objects/Decals/F-14A_74/file, respectively)

3a. You may need to add the aircraft's TextureSet to the F-14A_74.ini file. To do so, open each new skin's folder and copy the textureset data from the respective textureset.ini into your F-14A_74.ini file, incrementing based on the last TextureSet number.

NOTE:

This series of skins are similar to some of the baseline F-14A_74 skins in the Super Pack by name and years. Feel free to rename any of the skins to avoid confusion.

4. Go Fly!

V/R,

Caesar

=============

v1.11 Changes:

1. Fixed VF-84's anti-glare paint.

=============

v1.1 Changes:

Fixed VF-1 tail, small gray smudge ended up on the rudders

Changed all BEWARE OF BLAST warning text under BuNo's to red to match real-world text used at the time

ADDED VF-114 and VF-213

Updated TextureSets

ALCON,

The Gulls skin pack has been updated! The major update is the addition of VF-114 Aardvarks and VF-213 Black Lions; a couple minor updates/changes were made as well, listed in the Read Me/subject discussion. While my initial plan was to do this in 2 halves (6 and 6 squadrons), things keep getting in the way. I'm glad to be able to release at least two of the remaining squadrons I had planned on right now.

Please let me know if you have any trouble with the pack.

V/R,

"Caesar"

      Hi,
      after seeing the TMF F-14 has wrong and inaccurate speed and fuel indicators, i found out the default Third Wire F-14 has working and accurate ones, but i dont wanna use it cause the TMF Tomcat is better and the cockpit too more realistic too, so can you switch the speed and fuel indicators on the TMF F-14 with the default Third Wire F-14? And for fuel too? Do you need to 3D model and/or do something else other than edit some text files?
       And is it or it's not possible to do?
      Down here are 2 pictures from the correct cockpit in the default Third Wire F-14:

      And 2 from the TMF F-14 (the inaccurate one):

      Thanks for helping.

      Hi everyone,
      I just noticed that the speed indicator in the F-14 Tomcat by TMF (TheMirageFactory) only shows up to 800 kts, and the Mach indicator does not move, not letting you know the speed of the aircraft if you have your HUD turned off.
      As you can see down here, i'm at Mach 2.23, but the indicator only shows 800 kts and doesn't go above. Obviously it adapts to my altitude, so if i'm higher, then the IAS is lower, but still should move, making it impossible flying at high speed without HUD turned on as i have it down here:

      Another issue, maybe even worse than the previous one, is that the fuel indicator shows wrong numbers, or as i may think, it shows "a number less". For example: if i have 20000 pounds of fuel left, it should show 20000, but it shows 02000. This is a theory on how it works, not confirmed, and i'm gonna explain you why i think it is like that:
      I hardly think i truly have 2000 pounds of fuel left, cause i choose Fuel 100% and tried climbing and flying for a long time with full afterburner, and the numbers slowly started going down, even reached the point of burning the engine at Mach 2.30and the fuel wasn't gone yet, it showed i had like 00700 left, so i presume it's 20000 in reality, otherwise i would have been out of fuel in no time, since it's a quantity even under the bingo quantity, but i flew for minutes and minutes in full afterburner, and at 8x speed, so. Speaking of Bingo, there's no bingo indicator.
      Here's a picture of the fuel indicator:

      I tried the default F-14 cockpit, and even if that one shows correctly both speed and fuel indicators and even if it's a great cockpit, i personally like more and find more realistic and immersive the TMF one.
      In the end, since these two indicators are crucial, especially for flying without HUD, and the fuel indicator especially, since there's no way to know how much fuel you have left even with HUD turned on other than the cockpit indicator.
      So, what i'm asking is:
      Is there a way to fix these? A mod that remakes the indicators? Or another cockpit that is not the default one that i can use to swap this one?
      Thanks in advance for helping me.

      As much as I like the stock F-14A, The roll rate on it is just awful. The only way I manage to get a proper fast roll is by pointing my elevators down and then rolling, which is really annoying when you're trying to gun someone down. Does anyone have any fix available for the data.ini on it? Would highly appreciate that. Thanks!

      "F-14A Iranian Bombcat"

      --- !!! Requires SF2NA !!!
      --- It uses AvionicsF14A.dll, F-14A_77_Cockpit.lod and F-14A_77.lod model by ThirdWire.
      --- This was tested at July 2013 patch level, on an "All 5 Merged" install.
      Modification:
      Some data of the weapon pylons, loadout, avionics, cockpit, for make it possible to use the F-14A as a fighter bomber through A/G mode with CCIP on HUD.
      Data of the leading edge slats, now movement it's automatic (depends by Angle of Attack).
      I've added vapor effects for the fuselage and air intakes (visible during high g maneuvers).
      Canopy now can be open by pressing shift-1 command.
      I changed orientation of Iran on Nations.ini, from friend to enemy (now you can engage fight with nato and israel air force jets).
