Gterl, I am truly impressed with the amount of work you're doing. I spent more than a year on the Galicia terrain, and that was just converting an existing terrain. You started from scratch and the results are amazing. I'm looking forward to the final version.

...just in regards to 'expectation management' .....

 

there are still flaws I'm not able (or willing...time you know) fix

 

- Fields going up/down the slopes (since valley are sometimes too narrow for one tile...or valley does not fit in regards to tiles)

- ACs sometimes not able to cross the mountains, e.g. gain altitude

- Objects & trees shimmering through clouds (but that's more of a game-engine issue, since I've seen this in WoV, etc.)

- Aerodromes not historical correct

- Streets going up the hills/mountains in a straight line (they should zig-zag up/down in reality)

- In summary, we're talking about a Thirdwire sim and not about MS-FlightSim.... :flyer:

yes, indeed. I feel you pain.

There is MUCH to be desired with the 3W terrain engine, and the tiling system.

 

you can always edit the height field via the ***.bmp, (export height field as bmp, then paint the desired region to a lower altitude color --which is a HUGE trial and error work-maker), import height field from bmp, reflatten ALL the airfields, and test in game. Repeat until desired result is obtained. LOTS of times...

Doing this now with the fjords in Norway for a ww2 map

No matter what flaws it has, caused by the terrain engine, it looks to be and awesome terrain.  There are flaws in all the terrains I fly over in Thirdwire sims.  If I dwelled on them, I wouldn't be flying at all.  Can't wait for your release.  Thank you for all your hard work.  I've been holding off creating an Italian terrain or objects until you release this.

- Various clean-ups within ini files (remove all unused comments)....PENDING

- Various clean-up regarding files, removing dublicates, etc.....PENDING

- Height map still needs to be fixed for a couple of aerodromes....PENDING

- Fixing 'dead trees'....PENDING

- Check 'North Sea' ships , since I guess they suit better as the WOV ships currently included....PENDING

- Placing (via target.ini) additional houses, debris, etc. here and there.....PENDING

- Movements.ini....DONE

Have you created any "StrategicNodes" for campaign use? They link all the ground locations for any movement of troops or vehicles for campaigns? They dont go into the terrain folder but into a campaign data.ini. I figured since you are fresh at knowing all the locations on your map it would be easier for you to make a "StrategicNode" list than any of us. I hope I'm not being too pushy, but it is important for campaign use.

Looking great! Thanks to all who are/have worked to get a WWI Italian Front going.  Hope you all will be patient with the many questions I will have in installing everything.

This is slightly off topic:

I've been seeing trains appear in some of these (and other) screen shots. I've been looking around the Combat Ace download sections with no success.

So, where did you guys get the trains?

from the ww2 terrains (EAWEuro I know for sure, and my Midwest USA "modern" terrain)

there's also a 'Pullman car' and 'box cars' available (the Pullman car is just the box car repainted/hex edited to create a new object)

They have to be stationary. There is no code for trains to follow any track. Good enough for me though. Lookin real good!
