Question: How do I set the data to make the afterburner turn on only in lever flight and not on verticle takeoff ?

Had the same issue with the Kestrel and I tried using both ways (real AB vs visual only AB) ended up with AB as a visual effect only because it was too easy to to hit AB during a hover and flip :sad:

 

One thing you can try if you've got just one AB nozzle (F35/Kestrel/Mirage IIIV) is having an invisible AB added to all the engines (no visible effect added) and a visible effect on just the rear engine. This would give you the added power of AB, the stability in a hover (I'd hope, not tried it) and visual look of only 1 AB.

For aircraft that has separate lift engines, you can avoid and at the same time still use the trust vector control.

What I mean is you could set up the lift engines as regular engines (without trust vector control), but with an agnled thrust, by using this entry:

ThrustAngles=0.0,80.0,0.0 - this is an example setting of thrust 80 degrees downwards

Then you couls set up the lift engines to be without afterburner.

Finally you could use a different input for the throttle of the lift engines, for example:

InputName=THRUST_VECTOR_CONTROL

 

This way you will have main engine(s), using the throttle control with full afterbuner and you will have lift engines, using the trust vector control for throttle, without afterburner, i.e. 2 independent input settings for throttle of the diffent engines.

 

Then it is interesting to test if the thrust vector control can be used both as throttle control and as animation control to open and close the intake doors and exhaust covers of the lift engines.

If that does not work, may be the intake doors and exhaust covers can be controlled by means of a separate manual animation SHIFT+1 or 2 or else.

You need to change this line:

and than you have wet and dry numbers for the engine. I can imganine if the numbers are equal for wet and dry so you will not have that "kick" with the afterburner and can set the AB effect for a special throttelrate to show up as usual.

 

I would increase the whole engine thrust and kill the afterburner kick with the method described

What we did with the Kestrel was to borrow the harrier setup where the 4 lift engines do everything (90' down for hovering and then rotate for forward flight) with the 2 rear exhaust positions joined so that it looks like there were only 3 engines. Then we added a 5th engine with no thrust but an AB effect to the tail pipe for the visual effect so while in reality all the thrust all comes from the 4 lift engines it looks like the power comes from AB effect on the 5th engine instead.

 

What I considered doing (but never got around to) was adding an AB to the 4 nozzles but with no visual effect so that when the 5th engine AB effect kicked in there was an extra "shove" which the current setup lacks. It may have made hovering a little more tricky though :grin:
