New Seaplane - Sopwith Baby

Recommended Posts

I have uploaded my third float plane, the Sopwith Baby, a single seat recon plane and light bomber. The download includes two skins, including an Italian skin with decals.

My thanks to Ojcar, who did a lot of work making this plane take off and land properly.

This upload makes the 30th plane Ojcar and I have made! (That's not even counting revisions and multi-pacs.)

Ojcar also revised the FMs for the Albatros and Rumpler. Those will be available as soon as the moderators review them.

Very nice! Now, that plane has CHARACTER! an interesting contrast to the sleek lines of the Rumpler, too. Great work!

Here's a small base for campaigns at Ostend (German Side). It's one of 4 WIP for now. You can try this one out. I will be populating them more. BTW it uses the Flanders terrain. Follow the folder structure for install. Remember to renumber the MarineFeld Ostend "Target" and just drop in the new Airfield.ini right into the Flanders folder.

The Hamble Baby was a slightly modified version of the Sopwith Baby. It had different floats and tail, and had a full wing aileron which was also an adjustable flap. A few of them were converted for land use (the Hamble Baby Convert - your link is to a reconstruction.)

But you're right, it would be great to have a land version too. I'll see what I can do.

Off topic I know but if you're open to considering variations, Stephen, as with the Nieu.10 and 12 and indeed the Rumpler CI and seaplane....how about a BE12 as a variant of the BE2c? Main difference is the nose, bigger engine with slightly different cowl contours, more cylinders and modified exhausts, plus an RE8-style Vickers, plus of course jus one cockpit. FM should be similar, just add a bit of 'ooomph' :) A BE12 or 12a (latter had with BE2e-style wings IIRC) would be best as the 12b was really a home defense version. A BE2c/BE12 package would be a great addition.

I think the best package would be a 2c, a 2e and a BE12, but Stephen is the boss....let him work and you'll see. Next Project is the Hanriot HD2 and finish the North Sea map (a generic wáter map to fly the floatplanes).

Other easy planes to do from work we have now: Albatros DI and Fokker DIII (at least the ealrly versión without ailerons)

I wish Stephen could remake some of the birds that were made years ago, since he's making planes there has been a jump in quality. His models and specially his cockpits are top of the top.

For example, the only Nieuport that i'm flying now is the Nieuport 10, and my favourite bomber now is the Albatros D.III (with simbad's textures).

I'm unemployed and my economical situation is bankrupt (30% is the unemployed rate in Spain now), but if i had money i will send him a donation for sure.

Hi Quack74 first off thanks for all you do for this great sim I wished I had your expertise, now for my question how do I see these great sea planes I have installed in FE2, i have added the ini to my Flanders terrain ect do I now have to make a mission or campagin here is were im at a loss I have no idea as to how to make ether a mission or campaign, is there any instructions as to how to make them I have search and come up with nothing.

I understand this is a WIP so do you suggest I just hang on a bit for it to be developed more.

I know Ojcar is great at the making of campains as I have his in my FE2 and working just great, can I be cheeky and ask could he make a mission so I can see the sea base.

Thank you for your time.

Forgive me for jumping in here Quack.

Don246 - If you have added the planes to your Aircraft folder, you should be able to fly them. But when flying a single mission, First Eagles will randomly assign you to an airfield, and it may not be the right kind for your plane. You can still start your mission in the air and land at the seaplane base.

In Campaigns, you can assign a plane to an airfield, so you can get the right kind of plane with the right kind of airfield. But, as you point out, that's a pretty complicated process.

I have a naval terrain coming soon. It will only use seaplanes and all the airbases will be for seaplanes. This will require a separate install of First Eagles, so if you're new to this, you might want to check the knowledge base to see how that is done. I will try to include installation instructions with my terrain when it is done.

Ojcar has been testing the naval terrain in FE2. I expect to have it finished (or good enough to use anyway) in a week or so.

Hello Don246. First, do you have the Flanders terrain?. If so do you have any campaigns installed that use the Flanders terrain? If so open the Campaigns' Data.ini and scroll down to the end of the [AirUnits] and add these lines: Just renumber them with the next consecutive numbers.

//GermanUnit 1

[AirUnitxxx]

AircraftType=AlbatrosW4

UnitName=Seefrosta

ForceID=2

Nation=GERMANY

DefaultTexture=AlbW4SeaCamo

BaseArea=Marine Feld Ostende

RandomChance=100

BaseMoveChance=00

MaxAircraft=16

StartAircraft=8

MaxPilots=16

StartPilots=8

Experience=80

Morale=100

Supply=50

Intelligence=80

MissionChance[sWEEP]=00

MissionChance[CAP]=10

MissionChance[iNTERCEPT]=10

MissionChance[ESCORT]=00

MissionChance=00

MissionChance[CAS]=00

MissionChance[sEAD]=00

MissionChance[ARMED_RECON]=00

MissionChance[ANTI_SHIP]=80

MissionChance[RECON]=00

MissionChance[bALLOON_BUSTING]=00

MissionChance[bALLOON_DEFENSE]=00

UpgradeType=NEVER

//GermanUnit 2

[AirUnitxxx]

AircraftType=Rumpler6B1

UnitName=Marine Feld Ostende

ForceID=2

Nation=GERMANY

DefaultTexture=R6B1HexCamo

BaseArea=Marine Feld Ostende

RandomChance=100

BaseMoveChance=00

MaxAircraft=12

StartAircraft=8

MaxPilots=12

StartPilots=8

Experience=80

Morale=100

Supply=50

Intelligence=80

MissionChance[sWEEP]=10

MissionChance[CAP]=00

MissionChance[iNTERCEPT]=10

MissionChance[ESCORT]=00

MissionChance=00

MissionChance[CAS]=00

MissionChance[sEAD]=00

MissionChance[ARMED_RECON]=00

MissionChance[ANTI_SHIP]=80

MissionChance[RECON]=00

MissionChance[bALLOON_BUSTING]=00

MissionChance[bALLOON_DEFENSE]=00

UpgradeType=NEVER

Then open the Campaigns' Config.INI and add the aircrafts' data like I made below: Also renumber the [GERMANYUnitxxx] to the next consecutive numbers. Next change the "UnitID" number to match the number position of the corresponding aircraft in the DATA.ini. EX: If the Seefrosta Albatros W.IV is the 10th "German" [AirUnit] then the UnitID in the config.INI should read UnitID=10. IMPORTANT: The UnitID doesn't mean the 10th [AirUnitxxx] but rather the 10th "German" Airunit. Yes you have to count all of the German AirUnits in the DATA.ini. If there is an RAF or FRENCH unit inbetween you have to skip over them and continue counting when you get to the next GERMAN Unit. If you have a big campaign with a lot of units it could be a real pain in the neck (or eyes). It's wise to number every unit by nation in order in the DATA.ini. Like I did above. Don't forget the //.

[GERMANYUnitxxx]

UnitName=Seefrosta

ForceID=2

UnitID=23 <-------------------Change this number to the number you get counting the GERMANAirUnits in the DATA.ini

StartDate=4/9/1917

AircraftType=AlbatrosW4

DescFile=FFA5.txt

StartText=BA1917StartGer.txt

StartScreen=WWICampStart.bmp

CampaignBaseScreen=DefaultBaseScreen.bmp

[GERMANYUnitxxx]

UnitName=Marine Feld Ostende

ForceID=2

UnitID=24

StartDate=4/9/1917

AircraftType=Rumpler6B1

DescFile=FFA5.txt

StartText=BA1917StartGer.txt

StartScreen=WWICampStart.bmp

CampaignBaseScreen=DefaultBaseScreen.bmp

Hope you understand what I wrote.

Hi Quack74 yes I understand what you have listed and I do have the Flanders terrain installed I use the Ojcar armchair campagins.

Just one thing were is the Campaigns' Data.ini ?

1- I have the catpack and know how to use it for extracting files.

2- When I open the Campaigns folder there are lots of folders inside starting with FlandersFront01 to FlandersFront39 but no Campaigns' Data.ini

Thank you for replying.

The Campaign's Data consists of two files, (example: the first is the FlandersFront01.ini and the second is the FlanderFront01_data.ini) and they are already extracted and in the appropriate folders. Since ojcar broke out each month, you have to add all the required information to each of the necessary month folders to have the above planes show up.

P.S. have your ever read the SF1/SF2 Knowledge Bases yet ??? All this is explained in great detail on how to add objects and planes to campaigns.

Errr....Armchair Aces doesn't use the 3ºrd party Flanders map. It uses only the stock Cambrai map. If you want a floatplane campaign, you better go to the download section, download the Bloody April campaign (tah uses the Flanders map, an add the floatplanes units there.

Maybe someone will do a (semi-fictional) campaign to use Stephen's map

Well ojcar looks like I must have made a misstake installing your Armchair Aces campain in my campains folder I have the following folders Flanders, Verdun, and Vogesen. NO Cambrai folders.

Will go over my install again.

Panama Red, yes I have read the SF1/SF2 Knowledge Bases but I could not find any refrence to how to make a campaign or a mission only how to add objects and planes to campaigns.

Thanks for reply guys.

Ojcar I just checked the Armchair Aces Redux campaign I downloaded again as I was going to reinstall and I see in the Campaigns folder it has FlandersFront folders, VerdunFront folders, and VogesenFront folders im a little comfused you say you do not use the Flanders map ? I must have it all wrong you are a much better person than me at modding FE2 than I could ever be.

So please could you explain the reason for using the Flanders folders in the campaign folder. Thanks.

I'll explain: Flanders map is somewhat bigger than stock Cambrai map. They covers same región, but Flanders map, being bigger, has some sea in it. On the other hand I chose the stock Cambrai map to portrait the entire Flaners región, because it has much more airfields than the Flanders map (I needed a lot of airfiedls for late 1918!). So the campaigns named FlandersFront....are played in the stock Cambrai map instead the Flanders one, and you'll be facing enemy units based historically in the entire Flanders región (not only Cambrai).

It's the same in Verdun. As we don't have a proper Marne región map, all units fighting in Verdun and Marne regions are based in the Verdun map in my campaigns.
