Inspired by the classic Spitfire picture below my 'what if' needs Curtiss to have got the XP-40 into the air a lot earlier...

not with an E model ... didn't start production until approx. mid 41 (last quarter?)

 

first B/C models entered USAAC squadron service 6/40

RAF deliveries 11/40 (Tomahawk IIA)

 

great looking skin, though!!

Yes, I know all that. That's why I commented that Curtiss would have needed to have got the XP-40 into the air a lot earlier.
