SF2 WW2 Northern Europe/North Sea Terrain (v2)

WW2 Northern Europe Terrain for SF2

- For SF2, Any & All (*Full-4/5 Merged Reccomended*)

This is an all NEW map, covering the Northern UK (Scotland, Orkneys, Shetlands), southern Norway, Denmark, parts of Sweden, Germany, The Netherlands, and LARGE parts of the North Sea.

This map makes use of =BOTH= the LimitedNations and AllowedMission statements. There are =NO= CAS or other Ground Attack mission tasking, other than Armed Recon and Anti-Shipping. Strike, of course, for the bombers, remains (exceedingly!) valid. Armed Recon mission are constrained to within approximately 100km of the coastlines (more or less) for BOTH sides, due to the long over-water distances involved in some parts of the map.

Like the last 2 ETO terrain remods, there is an extensive road network on both sided of the channel (lesser in Norway, of course, due to the tiling constraints and fjords!). As this map was (relatively) designed for anti-shipping strikes, you'll find plenty of them to keep you busy. Plus all the other allowed missions, for both sides.

*Geophysical Disclaimer: some rivers and other water features may not follow their Real Life ™ courses, or be placed in their Real Life ™ locations, or exist at all. Several cities and other physical features (mountains, vallies, coastlines, forests, roads, etc) may also fall into this classification; Some populated places may exist only as a "named place" on the map (even some fairly large, and strategicly important ones). This was done for operational reasons. Many airfields/airports, some of historical significance, may also be non existant or not placed in the Real World ™ locations due to tiling constraints. Bridges may also not be in their Real World ™ locations, or run in their historical directions.*

When in-game, you'll see "Northern Europe, WW2" on the terrain selection dropdown window.

The bare minimum of Ground Objects are supplied; you'd be well adivsed to have the EAWEuro WW2 and Battle of Britain Rebuilds, with their included objects in you ETO mods folder. Other objects are also needed, listed in the "Other Stuff Needed" Section below.

As always, unzip this to a temp folder or your desktop, and you'll have access to the rest of the readme for it's instructions. It's reccomended you read the document through after unzipping, but -BEFORE- installing. As always, the Notes and Other Nonesense section may make for entertaining reading, as it explains a few "oddities" you WILL experience!

Please also read and -OBEY- the New Standard Usage Discalimer ™, as it's been changed slightly to reflect a change in my policy. It's listed at the bottom, in the Legal Statement Section, with the URL back to the CA post.

Good Hunting!

Wrench

Kevin Stein

Edit:

new readme uploaded within terrain, with corrected Credits.

my sincerest apologies to Stary!!

Edit #2

with special thanks to Gepard for finding my mistake!! MANY THANKS!!

southern Norway, Denmark, parts of Sweden

After having a swing or two, I must say this is some nice piece of work, Kevin! Whenever I get to do that "Hunt the Bismarck" Campaign I been wanting to do for half-an-eternity, this map will be pretty damn good for it.

Coolio! Is there/will there be a modern version avaliable ? Can think of some pretty cool WW3/RSR scenarios for this one.

let me check for bits and pieces:

ww2 hangars repaint: check

generic hangars pack: check

several lighthouses done for IndoPak as requested by Wrench, The: check

several other textures like TODs graphics etc: check

new exclusive railway station/depo object made for one certain Wrench: check

ummm missing something? Ohh yeah, crediting these objects author I guess?

Sorry Kevin don't want to sound like ass but 1) Fair Use License we agreed to obey years ago 2) I'm in a really bad mood today :sad:

other than that will give it a try in a post WW2 trial runs

Does someone have the a planning map problem like me too?

Seems to be that the planning map does not fit with the terrain locations. All places are moved some dozend km east. British airfields are mid in North Sea etc.

Stary: omg!!! I totally frakking forgot!! Not only the hangars and lighthouses, but the new train station!!!

shit man, I so sorry! I'll update the readme and re-upload the whole thing

I know all about bad moods -- my sister is back in the hospital again since Monday. This year is already starting off like last year.

Gepard:

I mentioned that in the read me notes. I have NO idea as to why it does that. I almost cancelled/dumped this project because of that. But at least the in-flight map is showing correctly!

Just have to roll with it, I guess!

Kevin, sorry for being rude previously, had bad day,

sorry to hear about your sister, I hope she'll recover fast! I have to visit hospital tomorrow due to bothed back surgery, so you know where my attitude is coming from.

Off to test! As for the map icons issue I wonder if other maps over 1000 km have this issue?

no apology is necessary my friend; I dropped the ball!

oddly, the EAWEuro WW2 has 7 digit locations, and does NOT have this problem

could be related to the higher latitudes or that Gerwin 'twisted' the base TFD/HFD to give the straight N/S orientation, as opposed to my original, which had the latitude 'warping', drifting things eastwards. (oddly, thinking about it now, the displacement is about the same ... if the map had the latitude convergences, the objects might show in the correct locations. Just don't know!!)

but it's only on the planning map views. The in-flight map shows things were they are (or go or whatever!)

hmmm that twist you mentioned is interesting... I think it's still not anything close to have globe projected map in SF2 engine? DCS like?

I found the problem.

Your terrain has the size of 1.500 km x 1.500 km. But in the norway.ini you set 1.200x1.200km.

Change the existing lines in the norway.ini with this:

[Map]

FilenameFormat=PlanningMap%d.bmp

Width=1500000.0

Height=1500000.0

NumZoomLevels=3

and it will work perfectly.

that sure did the trick! Never even noticed that mistake

Looks like I'll have move the front line east a bit, but that's an easy fix

Seconded.

Also a version of the Norway_water map with shipping areas enabled would be great for flying carrier strikes or maybe RAF or Luftwaffe anti shipping strikes against convoys or battlegroups, and of course for WW3 scenarios too.

But even without, this is an excellent map - great stuff Kevin!

Wrench, how does the error with the TW mission editor that you mention in the ReadMe file manifest in game?

I would like to know because even though I have activated the "cv-zoned_norway_Water.bmp" in the Norway.INI file I cannot get the Naval or Fleet objects or menus to work properly in the mission editor.

In contrast your EuroWW2 Terrain works in the mission editor without any issue.

This is how I have the Norway.INI set up.

try changing the name of the (cv) water bmp to match  the original

ie: Norway_water.bmp, and see what happens.

I think all that stuff has to match (inis, tfd, hfd, etc)

I haven't looked at it for some time, having moved to south aisa (or working on Daniel's aircraft)

Tried changing the file name, no dice. As you can see in the images below when I right click the menu does not even list Naval or Fleet Objects groups and I can place tanks in the North Sea.

that's what I was getting before fixing the terrain size. ok, I see now...

I have no idea, brother.  It may be something in the terrain I've missed, or shitty coding in the mission builder (which I find hard to believe, as the PTO Phillipines 44 seems to work with naval objects, iirc)

asking at 3w would be of no use, as it's a 'use built terrain'.

I had that issue before.

The water map has to be in an exact format to work; an 8bit BMP File if I am not mistaken (and I might well be, but I am judging from the Sweden Water Map that I know works)

the water bmp was generated by Gerwin's TFD tool, and it's worked for me before, again I don't know why thing aren't working
