as we are on the eve of getting a new, fully carrier-qualified Sea Fury for Korea, it has come to my attention that HMAS Sydney has NO escorts!! (we can't count the Darings, as they don't come online until almost 1960!!)

This lead me to think about "what can be used as a stand in for the 2 Battle class DDs??"  The only answer I've found is, using one of the V/W class (even with the MAJOR differences!!) as the 'best closest match'.

as we are desperately short of ship building capacity (and our 2 major contractors are pretty full up with work), how would this sit with you all??

Obviously, they would be titled as "Battle class DD, SI" (for stand in).  At the very least, it would give the RAN CV something to be escorted/protected by.

--

next question regards the RAN Sea Furys themselves ... I've got photo evidence showing them in Korean waters with AND without the 'invasion stripes'. So...

which scheme would be preferable to you End Users?

1) no stripes

2) with stripes

thanks for you attention!

edit: oppsy! only 2 Battles in RAN service! which makes for a 'odd' fleet!

Stripes for the Royal Navy. No stripes for the RAN.

Wait, 4 Battle-class ? AFAIR there only were two involved in Korea, besides the majority of Commonwealth destroyers were C-class (mostly from the RN and we, mostly, have them), then Tribal-class (the RCN ones, we don't have proper ones) and only then the two Battle-class RAN destroyers, followed by a V-class or River-class destroyer here and there.

The majority of Sydney's escorts were Tribal-class and American destroyers, the two Battle-class destroyers only escorted Sydney during a few of its patrols, the rest of the time they were assigned to RN carriers escort, shore bombardment or islands protection.

So yes, the Sydney has almost no escort, not because we are missing the Battle-class but because we are missing the Tribal-class.

This was a message from the Tribal-class Appreciation Society... ahem...

From what I understand, they operated primarily with the invasion stripes and were either painted on-route, or when in theatre, though this wasn't completed entirely before ops started. From a technical standpoint, you'd be accurate with either, but I think you'll be more accurate with the stripes. Are you using the RAF-styled blue/white/red roundel for these furies? I'm just checking because the Roo-roundel wasn't implemented until '56.

The RAN would have been operating three Tribal-class destroyers during Korea, although it would have been normal practice to operate as a formation along with other Commonwealth or USN task groups. RN Light Fleet Carriers were also operating the Sea Fury off Korea at this time, and operating alongside them would have been commonplace.

I just found this commentary on Commonwealth carrier ops. The RAN FAA had only been established in 1948, and HMAS Sydney operated the same form of air group as her RN sister ships, operating as an integral part of the same task groups, in between RN Carriers. Even replacement aricraft came from UK war stocks.

excellent info guys!

Gunrunner, I edited my original post, as I'd read the number of Battles wrong. It's now back to 2.<g>. I've also updated my Tribal stand-in as well, adding RCN and RAN boats. It'll be included in the Sea Fury package (or I can release it separately as well to update the ones -I think released seperately!!!- for WW2. I like Tribals, too. Had the Revell model 'way back when I was kid.

ok, it seems NOT right way for stripes, eventually. I can fix that with another skin, using the StartDate= tag, and have the RAN Furys stripes 'turn on' at a given date.

as to markings, yes; standard tri-color roundel, no roo. Others will need to finish my partial template for the bird, as to be able to repaint it for later RAN and whoever eles used it (Kon Marine, later FAA, etc)

I REALLY wish we has something to use for the River class frigates .. but, well we all know how it is!!

like most things around here, they wouldn't (or more accurately, COULDN'T) get done without a lot of really good folks pitching out.

just put the Wyvern cockpit into it Kevin, I spoke with Dave and he says it's ok to redistribute the Wyvern cockpit without the full bird, it fits Sea Fury quite well

actually, it's using the Hunter pit. It fits better, viewpoint-wise. Even if it's missing the prop and mixture levers (which also aren't on they Wyvern, as it's a turbine). Even though it lacks the standard UK "spade grip" stick...

in the screenie below, I've zoomed back a bit to give a wider angle

There are some " over the nose" visibility issues with the Wyvern pit. Maybe include both options?

When comparing the canopy geometry and gyro gunsight, the Meteor´s pit is the best choice.

that's be totally cool! Carlo (soulfreak/7eleven) has it for final testing. I should get his report early next week.

I will issue it "as is" with the Hunter pit, and if you manage to do one whenever, Stary,  easily issue an updated/replacement cockpitThanks!

in the meantime, I'm rebuilding israel2 with all new tiles (IME based, except for the farm and bergwald tiles), and retargeting. It's really starting to look good!
