Tom Cruise confirms Top Gun 2

Recommended Posts

For those old enough to remember the first one (snicker)

Rumours have been swirling for years that Cruise would revisit the movie that turned him into a household name. Last year, the film's original producer Jerry Bruckheimer drove fans wild after tweeting a photo of himself and Cruise, hinting that they met up to discuss a Top Gun sequel.

On Tuesday morning, Cruise finally confirmed that the rumours were indeed true. Speaking on Channel 7's Sunrise, the Hollywood heartthrob said principal photography should start within the next 12 months.

He came out to Lockheed like 3 years ago, got a tour, and talked with some people about it. At the time, the plot involved him being a LM test pilot.

Call me skeptical but I'm not getting my hopes up. Of course I like knowing this. But then recently several things I've been waiting for over the years have just turned out less that what was anticipated. It will be interesting to see what the end product will be.

To be honest, I think it could sort of 'redeem' the F-35. Lots of people love the F-14 because of Top Gun, so maybe, if done right, the sequel could convince people that the F-35 isn't that bad (not me, I just won't).

Although, looking at it purely from an story-telling perspective, I don't think Top Gun needed a sequel. Maverick becomes an instructor while banging the woman whose name I don't remember. The end. The action-filled part of his life is over.

I'm thinking the plot could be like Cars 3's; with new guys replacing the old ones, while they try their best to keep up. They can even make up a bit of history and have the F-14s replaced directly by the F-35s, so not only the pilots but their trusted aircraft are replaced aswell. Of course all this won't happen because Mave became an instructor, so it is his job to get the old pilots replaced by younger ones.

I'm not exactly looking forward to this movie, I don't think the plot will be as unique as Top Gun's was, and I think the F-35 is an ugly turd, I'd rather watch 50 Shades of whatever than an entire film of F-35s (no offense, but I just hate that thing).

F-14s to F-35s is a big jump in the sense you're proposing. Perhaps F-14s to F-18s could work. Or F-18s to F-35s. From some documentaries I've seen there can be a lot of action for an instructor pilot.

But we'll just have to see.

I feel like this is going to face-plant like nearly every other movie attempting to capitalize on 80s nostalgia.  The first one was highly successful because it was the right movie with the right formula at the right time.  Great cinematography with live aircraft, loud music, explosions, and a paper-thin plot to tie it all together.  'MURICA!  80s!  YEAH!  I unashamedly enjoy the hell out of the original to this day and can say without question that it is the reason I am in the Air Force.  But now 31 years removed from the original?  I have no idea how they'll make anything that will successfully cater to a modern audience out of that.  If they were going to make a sequel, the time to do so would have been somewhere between maybe 1988 and 1992.  2017!?  Egh!  But, I've been surprised before, so I guess we'll see.

Yeah. We'll see. I'd rather be so wrong about this one.

That's the thing these days isn't it? Audience is getting smarter and more impatient for the tactics that used to work. Then you have to navigate the deep waters of political correctness very well. Take Ender's Game the movie for instance. Orson Scott Card offended the wrong crowd and now all of the production companies dropped him like a lead brick. That movie series could've gone somewhere...probably.

I love Top Gun, look at my avatar for crying out loud. It's the movie that really helped spark my love for aircraft and F-14s. I've always liked aircraft but once I found that movie (at a really young age mind you) I really loved it. I'm thinking about watching it tonight or tomorrow. I'm just tired of my nostalgia being used to get me to buy something that is crap.

Top Gun 2: The Ice Man Melts.

Top Gun 2: May the real MiG Stand Up Please.

It would actually be cool to see them do the program some justice though. And actually poke a little bit at the original.

"You can take all of that Top Gun shit and through it out the window."

"What? You thought you could come here and bang your instructor? This isn't Top Gun."

"If you say 'talk to me Goose' I'll crack your face like an egg."

Okay so I'll let the fighter pilots here at CombatACE continue if they wish. I'm sure they'll come up with something much better.

Top Gun 2: Super Hornet Boogaloo

Top Gun 2: You Found that Lovin' Feeling

Top Gun 2: The Killing Jester

Top Gun 2: Why jettisoning the canopy before ejecting saves lives

Top Gun 2: Manual wingsweep and you...forcing the Tomcat out of a flat spin

XD

So I just ran into this. Nicely done if you ask me. Top Gun the FSX version. The original I saw years ago has lost it's audio because of copyright issues.

I wonder what Cougar is doing nowadays.

The character or the actor?

If the actor then https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Stockwell_(actor)

He slid into the directors chair and produced a couple of thing.

If the character. Then he probably got into either crop dusting or called that truck driving school Goose was thinking about calling.

I don't know how close this will be to the one Tony Scott was working on a few years back before his death. The guy they're apparently going to pick did a good job with the Tron sequel (another 30 year gap there), but it really boils down to the script.
