There are several similar pics on the net. If someone landed on the wrong carrier, the plane was "decorated" in special ways. ;)

One thing is certain, when he got back to his own carrier he was heckled by the pilots from his own squadron, and I bet he got a right earful from his C.O.

It seems to be, that it was common on US carriers to give planes, that landed on the wrong carrier a special paintshop. Some say it had be done during Vietnam War too.

It would appear that landing on the wrong carrier is, or was a common practice. Maybe some of them had to do it because they were almost out of fuel or badly damaged and needed to land on the first available, or nearest carrier. !!!

Emergency cases (battle damage etc) did not count, afaik.

Only when the pilot somehow choose the wrong carrier/ landing pattern

and once committed theres no way to get away from it ? (safety regulations ?)

F-14’s on Midway were an emergency divert and they were treated carefully.  The CO made it Very Clear that no “tagging” was to be done.

We had an E-2 execute a directed, emergency divert due to zero zero weather.  They were not treated with such restraint...

some of it was pretty artistic.  I had the clean up crew leave some of the more entertaining stuff on.
