I think this question has been asked before, but just for my own peace of mind I think I will give it one more go.

Is there any way to get SF1 series games working on Windows 10.

Sadly, I upgraded to Windows 10 a few months ago and since then I have been unable to get Wings over Europe SF1 working. I have tried every thing I can think of and every  sensible suggestion, but I think the overall reason (as has been suggested) is that the older generation of Strike Fighters games are not compatible with Windows 10. The game runs but it is incredibly poor and eratic, and crashes to desktop are frequent.

If any of you guys have got WOE  SF1 on your Windows 10 rig and you have got it running well then I would love to know how you have got it set up.  Any advice or info would be most welcome.

Thanks

RUSTY

My SF1 in Windows 10 settings.

1. Install latest DX9.

I'm not sure but I believe the latest DX9 driver is 'directx_Jun2010_redist.exe.'  It can be found on the internet.

2. Install ENBseries.

Install the game BUT NOT in the default installation folders.  Put it in the C: root folder or on another drive.

    I use FalconC45's 'HDR Mod 1.01A' found here, 'https://combatace.com/files/category/747-environmental-mods/?page=2.'

The HDR Mod 1.01A is for high end Nvidia graphics cards.  There is also a mod for ATI/AMD graphics cards on that download page.

3. Set SF1/WOX .exe file compatibility mode to:

1 - Check box for 'Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 3).'

2 - Check box for 'Run this program as an administrator.'

Your compatibility mode might differ.  You might need to experiment with different settings to find the right one for your computer.

4. I use '4gb_patch.exe.'  I don't know if it makes much difference, but it doesn't stop the game from playing.

It can be found about 10 files down here: https://ntcore.com/?page_id=345.

Remember computers differ, so my settings and adjustments might not work for your setup.

Good luck.

An alternative is just to get the Complete SF2 set, which is on sale for $100 USD. There's an announcement in the SF2 forums:

And since it DOES run in Win10, might be a good investment.

Also, the Winge10 version of SF2 (with the desert map) may be nearly completion and release.

Just saying.

I just installed SF2 Europe on my Windows 10 machine. It runs flawlessly with a 1GB Radeon card and i5 3.2Ghz and 16 GB memory. Compatibility mode Windows 7 Administrator.

Thanks for you replies guys, - will have a look at the suggestion made by Geary and if that don't work then SF2 may well be the last resort.

Thanks again for all of you replies chaps. Good to know that you can get some good advice when you need it from other Combat Ace members. Much appreciated.

Cheers

Aye up me duck.

Yes Spinners been a while since my last visit, had totally lost WOE.

Well I got the game back up and running but the Frame Rate is very poor. It is not really playable as it is. But at least it is working again.

Any suggestions of how to improve Frame Rate. I have adjusted the graphics settings down to a moderate level but I don't want to go any lower as I am loosing image quality.

No not really. I'm not the greatest on that sort of thing and it doesn't help that the elderly game we love isn't optimised for modern hardware.

When my W7/i5 PC went t1ts up in 2016 I could have bought something bigger and better but I took a long break away from Strike Fighters and came back in 2018 to play SF1 et al on an elderly XP machine before treating myself to a new W10 PC at the start of 2019 when I retired. I don't have any issues with frame rates but I do have an issue with hills and mountains on the far horizon being white - not brilliant in the desert or Vietnam!

I think it is the old story, SF1 is not really compatible with the latest versions of Windows.

How is your rig set up, and have you used any additional Mods or something to get it to work okay. ???

This is my rig set up:

Asus Essentio CM6830-07

- Intel i7-3770 QuadCore 3.4GHz CPU

- 16GB DDR3 PC3-12800 (800MHz) RAM (2x8GB)

- 4GB GDDR5 EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Video

- 1TB WD Black SATA-III 7200RPM Hard Drive

- 3TB WD Black SATA-III 7200RPM Hard Drive

- Corsair CX750M 750Watt Power Supply

- MS Windows 10 Professional 64-bit

ALL my installs are modded.

Have you tried 'My SF1 in Windows 10' explained further up in this post?

I'm not sure what causes SF1 to fail in Windows 10 but first it seems to be DirectX 9 missing.    So, install 'directx_Jun2010_redist.exe.'

Then, installing to the default directory seems to cause problems.   So, install to the root directory or a separate drive.

Then, the default compatibility mode causes problems.    So, I set my compatibility mode to 'Windows XP (Service Pack 3).'  AND 'Run as administrator.'

Then, multiple Windows 10 updates cause issues.   I apply all Windows 10 updates.  Still have SF1 working installs.

I use Nvidia graphics cards and Nvidia updates sometimes cause problems.   So, install the 'HDR Mod' for your graphics card, either Nvidia or AMD/ATI.  The ENB series files are the only part of the HDR mod I use.

SF1 is built for 32-bit operating systems.  Usually single core processors.  I use the '4gb_patch.exe' because it's supposed to allow single cpu core apps to take advantage of more than one core.  Whether it works or not I don't know, but it doesn't seem to stop the game from playing.

I don't know that ALL this is necessary but it works for me.

Thanks very much for your information Geary.  It is worth taking a look at some of the things you have suggested.  I might just get lucky and get things running well again , enough to add all my SF1 aircraft which I have got stored in a storage file. I think it is worth a shot. I will start with installing Direct X 9 and progress from there.

I very much appreciate your reply and the information you have posted, it may even help others who have got similar problems with Windows 10.

Thank you Geary.

Help fund the Strike Fighters 2 Windows 10 update!

Strike Fighters 2 is a series of popular PC games we released back in 2008 (over 11 years ago!). It was a unique series of inter-connected light/casual flight simulation games set in the Cold War. Despite its age, it's still being enjoyed by many users, thanks largely to its huge and active mod community.

The games were originally designed on (then brand new) Windows Vista, but over the years, new Windows versions have came and gone (Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and finally 10), the hardware has evolved at dizzying speed, and internet security and privacy have become major concerns. With all these changes, some people are reporting issues running our old games on newer machines.

We'd love to be able to update the series to the latest Windows and Direct X version. But we're a very small independent company with very limited resources, and we do not currently have the funds to do this. And this is where you can help!

$25,000 USD is the minimum we need to cover the cost of development and testing. At this level funding, the update will simply be Windows 10/DirectX 12 update with no other fixes, enhancement or improvement.

Of course, any funding we get above and beyond the $25K amount would be used to further enhance and improve the series. Our users have asked for Oculus VR support, air-to-air refueling, and many other features. These all cost time and money, a lot of it unfortunately, so they'll need to be prioritized. We'll put the decisions about which additional features to work on to vote among the contributors. So by funding this and becoming a contributor, you're not only helping us with the funding, you'll also have a say in which direction to go with the update.

We estimate it'll take 2 months of development and testing for the update to be completed. So if we can get started by mid-September, we should be able to release the basic update by this November before Thanksgiving. (Any features from additional contributions will of course take longer)

We'd like to thank our fantastic community, especially the mods community who continue to put out amazing work to improve our games for everyone. We couldn't do this without the community support. Thank you!

Answers to some questions asked online:

      Q. What happens if the funding goal isn't met?

      A. Not everything will be lost even if we don't make the funding goal. We do plan on securing the amount we're short by through other means (loans) and still get the Windows 10 update done at a later time (probably early next year). If we have to go this route however, the update will have to be a paid update and not free to everyone so we can at least recover part of the cost. It'll be free to only those who contributed to this and those who purchased the SF2 Complete Edition.

Please note that this campaign is set as "Keep it all", meaning we keep all the contributions even if the funding goal isn't met.

      Q. Can we add <xyz> features and fix <abc> bugs?

      A. We'd love to be able to do everything everyone is asking for, but unfortunately, all these take a lot of time and money. If you're expecting our games to have all the features from other AAA-quality games, then you'll be disappointed. Those games costs 10+ (some over 100+) million budget, and there is simply no way we can even come close to that with $100-500K budget we usually spend on our games. If this crowd funding makes more than the funding goal, we'll have the contributors vote and decide on which features we should spend that extra amount on.

      Q. Are you going to continue to support the game?

      A. We wish we could continue to support the game forever, but again, these things takes a lot of money, and we simply can not afford to keep supporting old games for years and decades. This crowd funding goal is enough to pay for just 2 months of operation. In order for us to continue to support the game year after year, we need the community to continue to buy our games (and not just play them) year after year.

      Q. Isn't it better to do Strike Fighters 3?

      A. We'd love to be able to do SF3, but we're not ready to commit that much time and money to a new PC game at this point (we still haven't paid off the development cost of SF2NA). A completely new game would take us at least 5 years and cost us at at least 2 million. Plus, everyone expect post-release support for 10-20 additional years, easily doubling the cost. We just don't think we'll be able to raise that amount needed based on numbers we have. We'd love to be proven wrong on this, if this fund raising goes way better than expected, we can re-consider this in the future.

      Thank you!
