Question about MiG-15 and MiG-17's flight model (.INI tweaks)

Recommended Posts

Good evening everyone,

Since I am working on a big collection of different MiG-15s and MiG-17s for different nations.  I found MiG-17 realistic flight model tweak which limits the maneuverability of the MiG-17s at high subsonic speeds, especially above .8M.  According to them,  I have to look at CLa= and Cmq= tables for the stabs at values .8M and above.

This part still confuses me.  So I am asking for someone to point me at where to look at.  That way, I can understand which codes to tweak for another MiG-15 and 17 that still doesn't have the maneuverability limitation at subsonic speeds.

I opened MiG-17's data file and went to [AircraftData]:

May I ask, which codes limit the Elevator responses at certain airspeed (Mach 0.8 and above)?

You need to look at CLaMachTableData=

This;

CLaMachTableDeltaX=0.10
CLaMachTableStartX=0.00
CLaMachTableData=0.973,0.975,0.979,0.988,1.000,1.016,1.038,1.066,0.201,0.001,0.001,0.001,0.001

In fact the 10th parameter is 0.001, which since the table starts at Mach 0.0 (CLaMachTableStartX=), and each parameter is an increase of 0.1 Mach (CLaMachTableDeltaX=), that's Mach 0.8.

...is also a part of the effect of limiting the pitching response.
The Cmq has a negative value, it means this component will not ease the aero-interaction with the others components. It will counteract it.
And the coefficient goes from 1.040 to 100. That will block the pitching response.
But it doesn't really limit the elevator response, it acts on the FM ensemble. It's just that the elevators stay the same and cannot deal with such an increase of negative Cmq.

Cmad value is similar but doesn't have "MachTable" scale.

The MiG-15s in the KAW mod probably have the "closest" to reality of the AI birds (for player use)

I think you are looking at the wrong section.
[LeftElevator] and [RightElevator] are the crucial sections:

[LeftElevator]
...
MaxControlSpeed=162.29
ControlMachTableNumData=4
ControlMachTableDeltaX=0.05
ControlMachTableStartX=0.86
ControlMachTableData=1.000,0.920,0.681,0.000
...

For  A MiG-17F?

Can't get closer than Fubar's MOD from 06.

As far as 15's?

Wrench is right!  KAW 15's are spot on.

Thank you for the advice. I am studying the FM files more closely.  At once when I am done with SF2 menu project,  I want to start working with FM to modify the aircraft's handling characters.

Try this MiG-17F data file.

I think it is the most accurate.

MIG-17F_DATA.INI

Thank you for the file, the more files I can study, the merrier.

That is noted, I recently downloaded KAW. I am looking forward to flying and trying the new flight model from KAW.

      Hello everyone,

      I have been looking through various MiG-19 series mods and I am still stuck with various MiG-19S data ini.  May I ask, which mod anyone recommend for MiG-19 flight model overhaul or have updated data.ini that updates the flight model?

      The flight model for MiG-15s and 17s are taken care of (Thank to KAW and Wing over Vietnam Expansion campaign mods).  I found the overhaul mods for SF2 MiG-21s and 23s.  It is MiG-19s that I am stuck for now.  To my surprise, the material for MiG-19 are rather very difficult to find, including the afterburner.  Fortunately, thank to DCS manual (MiG-19P) and MiG-19 series book, found some pictuures needed for afterburner effects.

      As always, thank you for the advice and information.

      Okay so hear me out. I finally plated the NATO fighter campaign in 1953. Guess I just got tired with the short and sharp dogfights of the Radar missile era of the late cold war so I decided to jump to the 1953 campaign on the MiG-15bis cockpit. Well, I have experience with supersonic jet gunfights (MiG-19 is my all-time favorite) but riding the MiG-15bis with a vastly inferior engine is something I am not prepared for.

      Sure, I could chase turboprop attack aircraft (A-26 Invaders are my favorite prey!) but I kind of struggle catching with jet engine ones without getting too distracted by my fuel reserves. Once I managed to trash F-84S (they were on a strike configuration and were running away) when I happened to chance upon two Canadair Sabres. They tried to run-away as well but I was too determined to catch them and I eventually did but then they dropped their tanks and turned around and an ensuing dogfight erupted between me and my wingman.

      Suffice to say, in my opinion, MiG-15bis guns were horrible. The entire aircraft had the tendency to lose alignment when firing and the bullet ballistics is crap owing to the heavier caliber. The turn radius seems to be terrible as well, as the Canadair Sabre effortlessly managed to outturn me. Then I found myself being chased, completely at their mercy. A Sabre fired a 50 caliber salvo and grazed my wing, clipping my aileron (thank god the tank didn't explode) and I managed to emergency land to a nearby airfield while my wingman managed to shoot one of the Sabre who tried to finish me on my landing approach.

      In my opinion, MiG-15bis is a terrifying interceptor and absolutely crap dogfighter, but still, I want to hear your side and opinions on this.

      Is the MiG-15bis inferior at dogfighting or am I just a crap dogfighter (lol)?

      (screenshots of my MiG-15bis barely managing to escape from the two Murderous Canadair Sabre on my tail lol)
