CROTALE mod by GKABS 1) Historical background The Development of the Crotale Surface-to-Air Missile system began in 1964. The Crotale is a very short range SAM system (Sol-Air à Très Courte Portée or SATCP). It was said that South Africa paid 85% (France: 15%) of the first step development costs of this SAM System. The Crotale was named "Cactus" for South Africa. Thomson-CSF for the radar and the electronics, and Matra (Engine division) for the R440 missile were the two prime contractors. South Africa received the first systems in 1971. In 1971 France placed the first order for operational tests: 1 Acquisition Unit and 2 Firing Units. The Armée de l'Air bought this SAM system in order to protect their airfields. The Crotale in this first opérational version (Crotale 1000) was above all engaged for the Egypt-Libya and Angola wars in the 1980s. Further developments were launched for several customers among the 15 ones which ordered this system. 2) Installation in your Strike Fighters 2 installation(s) There are 2 options : - The "Sand" version in order to put in any "Desert" type SF2 install, - The "Green" version for any "European" type SF2 install. So you'll find them into 2 separated packs ready to play :) If you need any further help please read the Knowledge Base at: https://combatace.com/forums/forum/268-thirdwire-strike-fighters-2-series-knowledge-base/ 3) Credits - Coupi for suggesting the model, document, creating the data files, and testing. From the bottom of my heart thanks. 4) LICENSE: You are allowed to use this model and everything included with it for personal non-profit use for Strike fighters 1 and 2. For use outside of this scope, you need to contact me for permission. gkabs@gkabs.net Software used: 3d Max 2009 UVLayout v2 Pro Substance Painter Adobe Photoshop If you need any assistance please contact me at gkabs@gkabs.net https://gkabs.net

The C-5 Galaxy Show of hands; whose seen this massive aircraft up close and personal? I remember being at an airshow and they let you get your picture taken in the cockpit of this massive thing. The fact that it can even fly is impressive to me. She may not be sleek and fast like a fighter jet but this aircraft and other cargo planes certainly help keep things on move. The C-5 Galaxy's is tasked with Strategic Airlift meaning that it's supposed to take needed items from anywhere in the world into a theater or operations ... in other words its job is to bring supplies and equipment to the war zone. The amount of effort that went into producing this gigantic aircraft was equally impressive and employed a lot of companies all over the united states. Some of the companies were even small companies that were able to contribute to the project. Tools, maintenance, and other support equipment had to be custom made as well by various sub contractors. It was a large scale operation that unfortunately came with some massive drama ... straight up scandalous drama that we'll briefly talk about in this Quick Aircraft Facts presentation. While we strive to do a good job compressing information about an aircraft's history into 3 minutes or less. There are times I'd like to dive more into an aircraft's history; however, there are some documentries out there I think some of you may enjoy if you have the time. I'd like to point you to a Vintage C-5 Documentary released by the USAF. (In case the link doesn't take you to the right time you might want to skip ahead by a minute or so.) Oh heads up, a new QAF will be released on Tuesdays. Thank you so much or your support, patience, and time.

Quite an interesting article from Air Force Times detailing some of the ongoing problems with the Lockheed Martin white elephant. https://www.airforcetimes.com/opinion/commentary/2020/03/02/congress-is-ultimately-to-blame-for-f-35-fiasco/ Sadly, it appears the Australian government is stubbornly pushing ahead with this process, at a cost of over AUD$100 million per aircraft. Despite what some claim, the issues surrounding the F-35 debacle have not been resolved and don't appear like they will be any time soon.

Bloody Stupid, the Aircraft is crap, plus its pig ugly, and its designed for a cold war environment, which doesn't exist any more. We would be better served by buying Russian aircraft, those at least are built to do the damn job, The F-35 has no job, because it doesn't know what its job is FFS , it's the TSR 2 story all over again, but at least the Government had the sense to scrap that white elephant , even if it was for the wrong reasons..........Oh and the TSR 2 at least was a pretty aircraft !!

There is a problem with the AI and missiles. 1) The AI can't use Laser weapons (well, that's not entirely true, under specific conditions your wingmen might use them, but not always, and no other AI plane, it's better to avoid them for AI use). 2) The AI uses the RocketAttackAI statements of their DATA.ini to attack, which means that while it is suited for rockets, it usually fails for modern, long range missiles. 3) Modifying the RocketAttackAI statement means you will tailor it for a certain range-class of missiles but means the AI won't correctly handle rockets and classes of missiles requiring another attack profile. You could tailor planes to have a better attack profile for Mavericks, but then the planes won't be able to have an efficient dumb rocket attack, or missiles with a different profile requirement. The parameters in the plane's DATA.INI are (values are there as an example for dumb rockets, not missiles) : [RocketAttackAI] RollInRange=8000.0 RollInAlt=1400.0 PullOutRange=900.0 PullOutAlt=200.0 ReleaseRange=2000.0 SecondPassRange=4500.0 SecondPassAlt=750.0 ReleaseCount=16 ReleaseInterval=0.08 AimPitchOffset=0.6 Everything is in meters, except ReleaseCount (in number of weapons fired), ReleaseInterval (in seconds) and Aim PitchOffset (in degrees). RollInRange and RollInAlt are the distance to target and altitude the AI tries to reach before starting its attack pattern. PullOutRange and PullOutAlt are the distance to target and altitude from which the AI will break out of its attack pattern. ReleaseRange is the distance to target at which the AI will try to fire its rocket/missiles. SecondPassRange and SecondPassAlt are the parameters for an eventual second (or subsequent passes), useful if you want to have a first pass at long range but don't want to wait for the AI to go all the way back to do another pass if the missile can be launched at closed range. ReleaseCount is the number of missiles launched per attack run, ReleaseInterval is the interval between each release. AimPitchOffset is for dumb rockets, and the number of degrees above or below the target the AI should fire (to attack for gravity and the pitch angle of rocket attachments), it's mostly useless for guided missiles. In the example above that means the AI will try to be 8km away from its target, at an altitude of 1400m, then will dive toward it, aiming 0.6° above and firing 16 rockets, 1 every 0.08 seconds when it is 2km away from the target. I can't remember if the PullOut values are the limits after which the plane disengage or a target to reach after firing. Once disengaged from it's first pass, if the AI still can fire the same ordnance it will try to get 4.5km away from the target, at an altitude of 750m and repeat the process. What happens in your case is probably that the plane tries to use the default, suited for dumb rockets, attack profile, meaning by the time it tries to fire the Maverick, it's already closer than the MiniLaunchRange for the missile, hence the passes without firing. The slamming into the ground might be solved by changing the PullOut parameters. The failure to call Rifle though is a bug that probably can't be solved that way and is probably tied to the number of sound voices playable simultaneously and their priority.

seen em at airshows, and watched one take off in a hurry one fine day in Iraq. found out later the tower told them to abort take off due to the ongoing mortar attack, and the pilot decided he wasnt sitting in the biggest target on the runway!! too bad the old dying whale imitaing a vacuum cleaner noise is gone with the new engines

AIM-9 project - next point: the "reduced smoke" motor. One probably reads about that when reading/finding info (old books, lists with AIM-9 variants) in connection to the AIM-9E-2. Its true, but it is only the tip of the iceberg :D And it was not in use in the late 60s. The new motor has a new grain which burns cleaner, producing less smoke. Theres more to it, the motor also has more thrust and gives the missile a higher impulse. Production of the new SR116-HP-1 motor started in 1978, with first deliveries 1979/80. While thrust per second is slightly increased over the old Mk17 motor, the burn time is 3.2 seconds versus 2.2 seconds of the Mk17. The new motor is used with variants of the 9B/E/J/N/P series. The combination of motor and fuse define the AIM-9 variant in combination with the Letter-specific Guidance and Control Section (GCU), the basic variants have no dash-suffix (e.g AIM-9J = basic J variant) Variant = motor + fuze 9J = Mk17 + Mk303 9J-1 = Mk17 + DSU-21 9J-2 = SR116 + Mk303 9J-3 = SR116 + DSU-21 This matrix applies to all B/E/J/N/P variants, the 9P has two more: 9P-4 = SR-116 + DSU-21 9P-5 = SR116 + DSU-21 Fuses: the Mk303 is the original IR influence fuse, the DSU-21 the new optical/laser fuse available from ~1979. Thus the -2 and -3 are generally the best variants, with the 9P-4/P-5 which have all-aspect capability having a further improvement.Of all the variants mentioned above only the 9P-4 and 9P-5 seeker can be slaved to the radar. For all other variants it is required to point the seeker directly at the target to obtain a lock-on. To be continued.. EDIT

SF2 MiG-23 & MiG-27 Floggers - Part 2 This mod supplies a collection of MiG-23 & MiG-27 Floggers, created by ArmourDave and The Mirage Factory, and heavily modded by Lindr2 for SFP1. (These are not mods of the 3rdWire Floggers supplied in the SF2 titles.) All have been converted and updated to SF2 standards. Also included with this mod are all the weapons, sounds, pilots, and seats that you will need to install and use any of the aircraft supplied with this mod. This mod consists of three parts: Part 1: 1st Generation MiG-23s (MiG-23S, Mig-23M, MiG-23ME, MiG-23MF, MiG-23MF, MiG-23UB) Part 2: 2nd Generation MiG-23s (MiG-23ML, MiG-23MLA, MiG-23MLAE, MiG-23P, MiG-23PD, MiG-23-98, MiG-23UM) Part 3: Ground Attack MiG-23s (MiG-23B, MiG-23BN) & MiG-27s (MiG-27, MiG-27D, MiG-27K, MiG-27M, MiG-27ML) Each of the three parts includes all the decals, pilots, sounds, effects that you will need for the aircraft in that part. This is the second part. The WEAPONS are contained ONLY IN THIS PART -- THE 2ND PART. These aircraft can be used in SF2, SF2E, SF2V, or SF2I. To install and use them, you should ensure that your SF2 installation is patched to at least the Dec2009 patch level. See below for installation instructions. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Installation ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Please note that installation of these aircraft will overwrite & replace the default 3rdWire versions included in the various SF2 titles. I recommend that you first REMOVE the 3rdWire MiG-23 and MiG-27 versions - even if you haven't modded them -- before installing these alternate versions. To install, simply drag the following folders to your SF2 Mods Folder (NOT the folder that the game installs to): \Effects \Flight \Objects \Sounds By default your Mod Folder should be located here: Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\[username]\My Documents\ThirdWire\[Game]\ Windows Vista: \Users\[username]\Saved Games\ThirdWire\[Game]\ Windows 7: \Users\[username]\Saved Games\ThirdWire\[Game]\ ...where [username] is the account you log into within Windows and [Game] is the name of the particular game mod folder that you're moving the files to. If the aircraft are not showing up in your Single Mission Aircraft menu, then you didn't install all the bits correctly. And remember, the WEAPONS are contained ONLY IN THE 2ND PART, which means that you MUST DOWNLOAD THE 2ND PART TO GET THE WEAPONS. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Aircraft & Nations Included ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The following aircraft are included in the three parts of this mod: Part 1: 1st Generation MiG-23s - MiG-23S Flogger-A (Early) - MiG-23S Flogger-A - MiG-23SM Flogger-A (obr.71) - MiG-23M Flogger-B (Ser. 1) - MiG-23M Flogger-B (Ser. 23) - MiG-23ME Flogger-B - MiG-23MF Flogger-B - MiG-23MF Flogger-B (Late) - MiG-23MF Rakshak - MiG-23MS Flogger-E - MiG-23UB Flogger-C (Early) - MiG-23UB Flogger-C Part 2: 2nd Generation MiG-23s - MiG-23ML Flogger-G (Early) - MiG-23ML Flogger-G - MiG-23MLA Flogger-G - MiG-23MLAE-A Flogger-G (32-22) - MiG-23MLAE-B Flogger-G - MiG-23MLD Flogger-K - MiG-23P Flogger-G - MiG-23PD Flogger-G - MiG-23UM Flogger-C - MiG-23-98 Flogger-K Part 3: Ground Attack MiG-23s & MiG-27s - MiG-23B Flogger-F (Early) - MiG-23B Flogger-F - MiG-23BN Flogger-H - MiG-23BN Flogger-H (Egypt) - MiG-23BN Flogger-H (Iraq) - MiG-23BN Vijay - MiG-27 Flogger-D - MiG-27D Flogger-J - MiG-27K Flogger-J2 (Early) - MiG-27K Flogger-J2 - MiG-27M Flogger-J - MiG-27ML Bahadur The following nations are represented: USSR Angola Bulgaria Ethiopia Czechoslovakia Egypt East Germany Iraq Hungary Libya Poland Syria Romania India Ukraine Sri Lanka Cuba Ivory Coast North Korea For more information on the differences between these various different versions, see the documentation included in \_OriginalReadMes. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A Few Notes About This Mod ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Those familiar with Lindr2's Flogger packages for SFP1 will rightly recognize that this updated mod builds on his earlier efforts. Although I have largely followed Lindr2's lead in assembling this package, there are some noteworthy differences between his SFP1 collections and this one: 1) Different Engine Sounds & Afterburner TGAs I have used different engine sounds and afterburner TGAs to give the various engines used by different models distinct sounds and appearances. 2) NATO Code Names The aircraft names do include the NATO code names, whereas Lindr2's SFP1 versions did not use them at all. Also, the Air-to-Air weapons use both NATO and Soviet names/designations (e.g., "R-73 AA-11 Archer"). 3) Wider range of Skins/Nations You will find a wider range of skins used to represent more nations, drawing on the various one-off skins that have been released by other modders. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Credits & Acknowledgements ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This package largely consists of work done by others and released previously in other packages. All I did was assemble the package, update the bits to SF2 standards, and make minor adjustments and tweaks here and there (discussed above). Rafael & BPAo .................................. Don't diss the beautiful, tiny-winged white elephant; the TSR.2 was a thing of beauty, the problem was more on the insane specs and expectations than the manufacturer abusing the system to get infinite money. The F-35 program, at this point, is just a gigantic scam, it's no longer about making a plane fit for a mission, it's about extracting as much wealth as possible and funnelling it toward Lockheed Martin and its backers. To think that some European countries are paying insane prices to use these things for air defence and air policing makes me sick.

I remember you telling us that story! I couldn't remember who it is was on this site that said it before but I remember you saying the pilot replied "F*k you! We're out of here!" I often wonder what happened to the pilot. I mean to me it makes sense the big fella needs to move. But I had nooooooo idea how so political and bureaucratic the military really is. You think doing the obvious would be acceptable but I'm betting there's some officer somewhere going "That pilot ignored protocols. We can't have that going on in this modern military service." Never served by the way I'm just saying, until recently, I never knew how bureaucratic the military can be at times.

I remember going inside one C-5 loaded with trucks during a visit to Rota's Air Base in Spain a few years ago, we were surprised because they let us get inside! It was impressive indeed, despite the heat of being inside a giant metal tube in the middle of a runway during a hot summer day hahaha I also remember poking my head thrugh the maintenance hatch at the top of the fuselage to have a better look of the gigantic tail. Later I ate in an american style pizza-restaurant inside the base after seeing the Harriers and the spanish navy helicopters. It was a great day! Great video by the way!

SF2 MiG-23 & MiG-27 Floggers - Part 1 This mod supplies a collection of MiG-23 & MiG-27 Floggers, created by ArmourDave and The Mirage Factory, and heavily modded by Lindr2 for SFP1. The WEAPONS are contained ONLY IN THE 2ND PART, which means that you MUST DOWNLOAD THE 2ND PART TO GET THE WEAPONS.
