Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation CA-14 Gidgee - No.5 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, 1945 When Joseph Lyons led the United Australia Party to a landslide victory at the 1931 Australian General Election to become the Australian Prime Minister he also served as the country's treasurer until 1935 overseeing Australia's recovery from the Great Depression. "Honest Joe" Lyons was a masterful political campaigner and his personal popularity was a major factor in the government's re-election in 1934 (albeit a coalition Government between the United Australia Party and the Country Party). In early 1935 he met Essington Lewis, the Chief General Manager of Broken Hill Proprietary, who had visited Europe and who had formed the view that war was highly probable. Lewis expressed his concern at the lack of manufacturing capabilities in Australia and suggested that miltary aircraft might not be available from Britain during wartime. Prime Minister Lyons was receptive to the lobbying campaign led by Lewis to establish a modern aircraft industry and the Australian government required little persuasion and encouraged negotiations between a number of Australian companies which would soon lead to the formation of the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (CAC) in October 1936 and by September 1937 a new factory had been completed at Fishermen's Bend, Port Melbourne. Whilst the company would initially pursue the development and production of the CAC Wirraway (a licence-built version of the North American NA-16) the firm would soon be presented with demands for the large-scale production of military aircraft to re-equip the Royal Australian Air Force. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941 created an urgent review of Australia's defences and, in particular, Australia's air defences were found to be a perilous position with just small numbers of CAC Wirraway general purpose aircraft and aging Brewster F2A Buffalo fighters available to the RAAF to defend the mainland. Although Britain and America possessed considerable aircraft manufacturing capacity their output was destined for their own air forces who were by now both engaged in battle. Furthermore, even where capacity was available the delivery of fighter aircraft would involve them being crated and shipped over long distances in wartime conditions. Australia's new Prime Minister, John Curtin, met with Lawrence Wackett (CAC's Manager and Chief Designer) to examine the possibility of designing and building an indigenous fighter aircraft. Wackett proposed a two-step solution of an interim design that would use elements of aircraft that were already being produced in Australia and a later design for a new high performance fighter designed from scratch. The CA-12 interim design would become the tough and nimble CAC Boomerang for which Wackett had decided to use the airframe of the CAC Wirraway as a starting point as this had the advantage of requiring little additional tooling and would therefore reduce the design time and lead to the earliest possible depolyment. Within weeks, the Australian War Cabinet authorised an order for 105 CAC Boomerang aircraft off the drawing board. For the new fighter design (now designated CA-14) Wackett schemed a neat single-engined, low-wing monoplane with an all-metal, semi-monocoque fuselage and graceful, evenly-tapered wings. To power the CA-14 Wackett and his design team selected the promising Alison V-1350 - a liquid-cooled inverted-vee 12-cylinder piston engine rated at 1,350 hp at 7,500 ft altitude with 2,600 rpm and featuring a mechanical direct fuel injection system using small pistons driven off the crankshaft. When compared to the Merlin installation on the Spitfire and Hurricane, the lowered inverted engine installation improved visibility for the pilot and also improved access to the cylinder heads and exhaust manifolds for the ground crew. Armament consisted of two synchronized .50 caliber (12.7 mm) AN/M2 Browning machine guns set in the upper fuselage decking fed by ammunition boxes positioned behind the engine bulkhead and with a further .50 caliber AN/M2 Browning machine gun in each wing. Pilots would later comment favourably that the 'four gun' installation was a good compromise between lightness and firepower and sufficent when used against most Japanese aircraft. For the new CA-14 design, and in keeping with the aboriginal theme, CAC chose the name of Gidgee - a lethal quartz-tipped spear. Development continued through the first half of 1942 and shortly after the first flight of the interim CAC Boomerang in May 1942 the Royal Australian Air Force approved the CA-14 design concept proposal and issued design specification 6/42 for work to commence on two prototypes and, subject to a successful test flight programme, a production order for 250 aircraft. The first Gidgee prototype was rolled out in February 1943 but the first flight would have to wait another two months following delays with the Alison V-1350. Finally on April 25th, 1943 CAC Test Pilot, Jim Schofield, flew the prototype Gidgee and this was soon followed by the second prototype just two days later flown by CAC's Ken Frewin. By the middle of 1943 there were many USAAF fighter squadrons now deployed in northern Australia operating a mixture of P-39 and P-40 fighters and the RAAF had also begun to receive P-40's of their own. With the first three Boomerang squadrons having also become operational the RAAF reduced their order to 125 Gidgee aircraft and the programme lost some of it's urgency so it was not until August 1944 that No.5 Squadron of the RAAF became operational at Toogoolawah before being deployed to Piva Airfield at Torokina on Bougainville in November 1944. No.4 Squadron became the second Gidgee squadron in February 1945 deploying to Morotai and then to the island of Labuan to support Australian ground forces in the Borneo campaign. The third and final Gidgee squadron was No.77 Squadron who re-equipped with the type at Morotai in April 1945 conducting ground-attack sorties over the Dutch East Indies before redeploying to Labuan to support the 9th Australian Division in North Borneo until hostilities ended in August 1945. All three Gidgee squadrons deployed to Japan as part of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force with No.4 and No.5 squadrons returning to Australia in 1948 and No.77 squadron was about to return to Australia in June 1950 when the Korean War broke out. Flying from Iwakuni in Japan, No.77 squadron joined United Nations forces supporting South Korea flying escort and patrol sorties until April 1951 when it converted to the Gloster Meteor. MODEL ISSUES: No model animation ID for the leading edge flaps. They are presently set up on a rotation axis but they don't look very good so it is probably better to just disable them for the release version. The real TU-160 probably used a combination of ailerons, spoilers and differential H-stab deflections for roll control but only ailerons are available at present. The H-stab is built as one piece so no way to get the differential H-stab deflections functioning. WEAPON ISSUES: Slightly modified KH-15 nuclear tipped missle included. The base quantity was increased from 4 to 6 to match the present capacity of AGM missle bay. The maximum capacity is 12 on the real Tu-160 but considering the effect on frame rates with so many nukes going off 6 might even be to many. Maybe 2 per plane would be enough. The maximum of 12 would be a good option for later versions with conventional warheads. When carrying conventional bombs the accuracy is very poor which is typical for Bombers in game. Maybe someone could put together a "semi smart" bomb that the AI can use that would improve accuracy. BOMB BAY ISSUES: The original was set up with both manual doors and automatic doors to operate the rotary launcher. I don't think that can be made to work so just using manual doors. DATE RANGE: For testing the start date is set to 1986 so you can fly F-14 intercepts on the TW Iceland NA terrain. The actual service entry date for the first TU-160 version was April, 1987. AVAILABILITY: Probably should be RARE or VERY_RARE for a release version but set to VERY_COMMON for test version. Should only take a few trys to get an F-14 intercept against the TU-160 on the Iceland NA terrain. ANTI-SHIP ISSUES: When doing player flown ANTI-SHIP missions I haven't been able to get the AI to successfully "Attack My Target". They can't seem to get within the firing parameters for the KH-15 Missile and end up flying around in circles. It's possible to get them to do an attack if you lead them around first and line them up outside 10KM before giving the "Attack My Target" command. FLIGHT MODEL AND DATA INI ISSUES: The flight model still needs work as do the min/max extents, damage modeling and collision points. *************************************************************************** *The model has Triple dragchute as in the real aircraft and has one historical skin made . Hello people, I am new to this forum. I just turned to Linux a couple of years ago, and missed some Windows functions. But that didn't stopped me from still using Linux. I like it a lot, but I can't play much. I can't play Third Wire productions, I can't play IL-2, I can't play X-plane, etc. So I decided to think about virtualization, and tried to install an old game from an old friend that I had saved in a vault, and try to install it through its CD to VirtualBox with Windows 98. I could do it, but the problem with this is that this Flight Sim is hard to deal with, because of the keyboard controls (I don't own a joystick because I sold it). Does anyone know where to find the keyboard control's map? The CD was scratched, so I picked it from here https://www.old-games.com/download/4239/f-a-18-korea This is how the game looks like inside the VirtualBox: I don't care if it is old, I like it. But I can't fly! I only can disable the breaks, accelerate, deal with the camera and cockpit view, and crash to the border of the airport. 😅 I hope this post is useful in some manner, thanks!

Hello! Three months ago I finished the radiotherapy and for the moment I am well, but there are secondary effects to the treatment and my recovery was in painfully slow increments. I didn't forget you all, I was thinking of you a lot when I was in my bed. Let's hope that the cancer won't come back. The tumor is gone but first 3 years doctors said it will be critic. I am staying positive and I am hoping for the better. Well about the project now. Baffmeister helped a lot fiddling the FM and the weapons problems. Since there was not time and inspiration to make it better in this time when I was gone, I will release it as it is, with improvements those made by Baffmeister. I hope you will forgive me , but It's been a long time since I was supposed to release it. PS - thank you for your support and your kind words. They helped and meant a lot to me guys. PPS - There was a thread in which were given solutions to that annoying thing of the game which copied over a plane files if the name of the folder was the same (the stock plane thing), I can't find it. If someone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate. Thank you!

After more than a year from its first release, the much appreciated realSKY mod has received a major update. This is a glimpse of what to expect; Added different cloud textures for each weather type. Rebalanced sky colours; twilights have been reworked to be more dramatic and atmospheric, whilst keeping realism as the main aim. Here below, screenshots taken during Scattered weather (plus two suggestive shots with Broken weather). Notice the different cloud texture between the two, and the complete twilight transition. Following a suggestion by baffmeister, the realSKY mod will now include alternative files which provide different weather effects for Inclement; you can choose between thunderstorm (default), sandstorm (for hot, desert terrains) and snowstorm (for cold, icy terrains). Reworked rain effects; lightnings are now rare, added new rain drops as a camera view effect. Added alternative environment files for snowstorm and sandstorm effects. Screenshots show the new effects (especially the ones that look best when the camera is fixed). Sandstorm weather features darker, brownish fog. Snowstorm features a brighter fog than thunderstorm. Suggested by tiopilotos, the mod now will feature additional tweaks for some stock game effects, namely contrails, wingtip vortexes and exhaust emitters. Added better contrail effect (thanks to EMCON360 for an old comment on the subject). Added improved wingtip vortex effect (credits to Eagle114th). Added new exhaust emitter effects (credits to viper63a and NeverEnough). Contrails are no longer flat; they are volumetric and expand as much as possible, within the limitations of the game engine. Wingtip vortexes are brighter, more varied and longer. Those effects now use their own textures, instead of using the same texture for different purposes as in the stock SF2 game.

As for my own favourite flight sims, and 'keeping it cryptic' (or rather, visual)... ...for World War 1, it was originally this one... ...but has been this one, for a long time... ...tho of late, I'm more inclined to this one... As for World War 2, it was initially this one... ...then, this one... ...but is now this one... As for the jet age, I don't play that era over much, but it would have to be this one... ...in its different incarnations...

SF2 Jane's USAF Hi-Res 1024x768 Menu Screens and Music! By Viper The Janes' Combat Flight Simulation Series! Every flight Sim'mer worth their wings remembers those! My favorite was the USAF! This package pays tribute to that old beautiful bird. It took me awhile to create this, so feedbacks and ratings would be highly appreciated...Enjoy! This mod includes custom "Jane's USAF" themed menu screens, pilots and music. This mod uses customized INI files to drive the sights and sounds of the Strike Fighter 2 interface to look like Jane's USAF. Unzip the package and preview the new screens before installing them. I recommend doing this as there are MANY alternate screens I have in there that you might like better (More on this later). If you choose to install this package, I recommend that you back up (copy) your FLIGHT, MENU and PILOTDATA folders in the SF2 Mod folder you're installing this package into. Just in case you want to go back to your original setup. * To install, simply unzip and copy the uncompressed FLIGHT, MENU and PILOTDATA folders to your StrikeFighter2 mod folder. I designed this package for SF2 Europe, but it should work for all SF2 series games. My StrikeFighter2 mod on Win97 64-bit was..(yours may be different)... C:\Users\<your_id>\Saved Games\Thirdwire\StrikeFighter2 Europe\ * To remove, simply delete the active FLIGHT, MENU and PILOTDATA folders and replace with the back up copies you made prior to the install. ----------------------------------------------------------------- * Extras and additional info... In the MENU folder, you will find three (3) other folders... 1) Alternates Folder - Contains "Alternate" Campaign, Options, Pilot, and Single Mission screens. If you like one of these better, just copy them to the main "MENU" folder and rename them to the correct names... CampaignScreen.jpg OptionsScreen.jpg PilotRecordScreen.jpg SingleMissionScreen.jpg ...for whichever files you are changing... 2) Music-Jets Folder - Contains alternate sound package. If the default music is too much for you, just copy the contents of this file into the default "MENU" folder. Most of the music will be replaced with jet sounds. 3) Music-On Folder - Contains the default INI files that will turn on all the music again. Enjoy!

The Dassault M.D.450 Ouragan (French: Hurricane) is a French fighter-bomber developed and produced by Dassault Aviation. It has its origins in a private venture by Dassault to produce an all-French aircraft which would make use of jet propulsion, which subsequently would receive orders from the French Air Force. The Ouragan was operated by France, India, Israel and El Salvador.
