Today we are taking a trip back to 2004, a time when as you can see from the photo above featured PC CDROMs! Before Internet speeds for most were high enough to consider sending entire game files they had to distribute games to people using good old fashioned Compact Disks. The shiny CD came complete with its own (Jewel) case with cover and even a printed manual. As you can see a time when even Thirdwire had to distribute games and make them look like games used to - the manual even tells me to go to http://www.softwarehelpdesk.co.uk/ for technical support…………..ha looks like that domain is up for sale! Looking at the back we can see it even ran on Windows ME with 256MB of RAM! - Yes, I had to look back to remember what Win ME was – the very last of the Win 9x line before Microsoft thankfully ditched that and we got Win 2000 then Win XP. Of course, in 2004 or nearly all of that decade Win XP was the only game in town for home users and it was great for its time. For anybody who had bought Strike Fighters: Project 1, a Vietnam game was a logical and most welcome step forward….a game that recreates the intense air combat experience in the skies of North Vietnam at the height of the air campaign……………..what could be better! The manual lists the Player and AI aircraft, and although the VPAF selection looks fairly complete, the US selection was very limited compared to the later Strike Fighters 2: Vietnam. This was a time when there was hope for the future and many opportunities to modify the hell out of the game and start getting into place the absolute ton of things not included in the box. Terrain & Environment As you might see (from the case) the Terrain that came with WOV wasn’t much better than what comes with one of Thirdwires Phone & Tablet PC games – a pretty poor and unrealistic looking barren wasteland. Unsurprisingly it was not long before modders produced somewhat better tilesets - one of the first I remember and although free was used by Yankee Air Pirate later: The RA-5 Vigilante - does not come with WOV There was a payware tileset for sale at Razbams store at some point – but suffered from having obvious borders and tile edges – also 512 x 512 bitmap files were pretty big at the time but very low res by today’s standards. This later effort includes a version of Starys Green Hell which included a lot more trees for the first time: Vietnam was hell - Green hell! When released WOV also had no clouds either but they were added in a later patch: Low level clouds, gone but not forgotten Game play The North Vietnam Air Force (VPAF) and air defences were quite well set up as part of the terrain, with relevant SAM and AAA models for the era along with relevant AI. The MiGs varied in effectiveness from patch to patch whereas some of the SA-2s had a Kill probability of about 99% - this was rightly toned down somewhat in Strike Fighters 2 (SF2). WOV included an airbourne FAC (Forward Air Controller) role and this was usually represented by an 0-1E Birddog flying over the battlefield (Callsign Snoopy) – this was removed from SF2. The game added Carrier operations for the first time although the carrier was pretty lonely by itself most of the time, and players could only fly off it in campaigns and scripted single missions! The B-52s thought they were safe from Thirdwires lesser spotted MiG-17F Payware There were some options for payware – mostly from Razbam and Yankee Air Pirate – both had air of controversy that I won’t go into here. One of the very few payware aircraft was the A-1 skyraider pack Before the Mission Editor arrived in SF2 you had to create single missions using Notepad basically, quite a time consuming and difficult process. Yankee Air Pirate basically created single missions based on real missions from Vietnam and was quite an important addition for anyone with an interest in that subject. Populated carrier deck Landing and taking off in Hueys from smaller boats like this Shooting down Colts in Hueys Shooting the side gun in Hueys - Get some!. Of course, with scripted missions you can do quite a few things you cannot in auto generated single missions and campaigns! Advance clone army! The VPAF, masters of camouflage Looking back Wings Over Vietnam certainly started out as a fairly serious attempt to put together a decent standalone Vietnam war Air Combat simulator and in that respects, did a pretty decent job, but only if you took time to add a lot of the mods available and change the game yourself. Graphically it was using DX9.0c so was up to date in that regards although again you had to add mods to get it looking to what it should have perhaps been out of the box. F-111A - not included with WOV EB-66 - not included with WOV …………and Here we are at the tail end of 2017 and still no real alternative to WOV and SF2V on the Vietnam War flight sim front.

If you don't want to have (such) surprises use this method I use: Make for each plane folders, meaning that every plane you have has the EXPORT=FALSE line in its dataini file. This way what is deleted remains deleted and, as a bonus, you won't have the nasty surprise, as I did, to see a MIG-21 with arab numbers, paintjob and Finnish emblems all over it.

(Personal Journal & Log) 05December 1917 Mission 17- Cold and cloudy. Line patrol, both ‘A’ and ‘B’ Flights. A few more new guys. My right hand is still shaky at times, started just gripping my sam-browne belt and the shaking subsides. I’m up to two packets of cigs a day now. As I recorded in my report we repulsed two separate flights of enemy aeroplanes over Arras. Wallworks got one, then a minute later I sent one down into the Flanders mud. We lost two of the new boys. I put my leave request in. 06December 1917- Mission 18. It was a scramble this morning, Naps yelling at the new boys “Come on idiots, don’t just stand there, GET ONE UP!” MacLanachan crashed on take off, luckily wasn’t seriously hurt although his machine was a total wreck. The enemy must have been from Haubordin as they punctured a few tents. 07 December 1917 Mission 19- Revenge! Aerodrome attack at Haubordin. We put holes in their tents, they put holes in ours, then we do it all over again. I swear there are monkeys running HQ. This is routine, search lights, some mediocre ack-ack. Fire off a couple drums of Lewis, a bit of Vickers and Bob’s Your Uncle. Was given leave as of 08 December, the C.O gave me two 48 hour passes since the weather socked us in anyway. I spoke with Dorothy’s Matron and she was granted the same. I borrowed Dalgleish’s motorbike because it had a sidecar and we rode like mad people for Dieppe. Officially married there by a kindly old priest. No questions, just a donation, and it was done. The hotel we stayed at down by the beach was a fine establishment and treated us well. Dorothy’s French was very good (Leicester girls must get a decent education!)where mine was a smattering of bad Quebecois. Somehow we made it back safely. I need to be more responsible now. 12 December 1917- Mission 20– heavy weather, rain. Pesky enemy. Another early morning scramble. This time we all got up safely and we chased the rotters all the way back over German lines. We were embroiled in a massive scrap and I managed to assist Naps in knocking down two machines. McElroy went west. My claim was rejected. 13 December 1917- Mission 21--broken cloud cover- Escort of RE8's from RFC21 over the enemy sector at FA6102. We were met with heavy concentrations of ack-ack as the surveillance boys did their work. We were bounced on the way back over our lines by a couple of Albatrosses. ‘A’ flight killed them both, a revenge for McElroy. We landed after escorting the RE8's back over their field. I’ll write more later as I’m off to see my wife... So that's it for me I believe- 3 weeks x7 missions = 21 missions 11November1917 to 13December1917 which included two periods of washout days. Surviving is a first for me, I usually don't last that long, usually buying it on the first day or at the midpoint. I think the longest I've lasted was in one of Olhams DiD campaigns with Jasta V (but in the end Rolf Meyer still died). This RR Challenge was really fun. Some of my given missions were certainly lacklustre, but they were all exciting to fly. I felt it was more of a reflection of history-- not every sortie was a clash with the enemy nor very exciting (authors of that day didn't write about the boring bits I'll hazard). The weather in this campaign period also seemed to affect enemy activity, and may also reflect a need to preserve what they had for Ludendorff's Offensive. I'll send in the form. There are other survivors so I'm cheering them on.

for anyone else reading this, talks are underway on a newer model. a couple have sent me copies of the model and SF2 update for it and i thank you. still looking for newer but as i like to say; cant find it, make it yourself. again, thank you for the help you have given, and no need to send me the older stuff anymore. Wrench, when you find them, that would be a good release even for the planes that have since been updated.

Best Answer: They heard you were in the neighborhood, and ran away. Probable Real Answer: you don't need Dhimar and Paran listed; it's automatic on the desert terrain. By deleting the unused aircraft (which are all exported, including western birds ExportedToEnemy=TRUE), you removed the possibility of their random generation for Bad Guy (tm) usage. You'll have to reinstate them if you want E/As to show up

well, its CenUS folder and MidWest USA. plugged straight in from a copy of the mod folders on the semi retired laptop. was unaware of any other Midwest terrain. but presuming its yours, and if you ever retool it, the city is so damn close to Midway when i flew out in April i could see faces in cars going by . iirc, couple years back there was an accident where an airliner overran the runway, through a wall and into traffic! mandatory screenie

SF2 E-767 AWAC and KC-767 Cargo/Refueler Aircraft by Veltro2K = For SF2, Full 5 Merged RECCOMENDED! = This is a Re-release of the Veltro2k's KC and E-767 aircraft. It is REQUIRED that you have -at the VERY minimum- a Full-4 merged install. However, the AWACs makes use of SF2NA coding, and is NA is REQUIRED for everything to (more of less) work properly. Also, as these reference the stock 3W destroyed model (closest fit in shape, but not size...). Hence, the need for a Full 5 Merged install. It is usable without, but you may not have the dead burning wreckage on the ground. Included in this pack are the: E-767 AWAC: 602 AACS, JASDF KC-767 Refuler/Cargo Carrier: 14 Stormo, AMI 401 Squadron, JASDF Skins remain in their bmp format; the KC-767 makes use of Brain32's trick of having the one skin, resued for both, residing in MAIN aircraft folder. Decal radomization is set to TRUE (well, there's 4 aircraft for each user!). A user list is supplied for the KC-767. New damage textures are supplied, in DDS format. The skins have been 'partly' redone. The partial template I used in included. Other skinners are encouraged to 'have at it' While this mod IS supplied with a cockpit, the Standard Waring Disclaimer ™ for these High Value Assets ™ remains: let the AI handle them. As AFR isn't part of the game ... the word we're looking for is "eye candy". As always, fairly easy to follow, detailed install instructions are included. PLEASE read them!!! Also, give the "Note" section a read, in particular on operational usage. The Legal Statement has been changed with regards to these aircraft. For those that still have the original releases, as there HAVE been changes and additions in several of the inis you may wish to examine, mostly in respect to SF2NA, you may wish to replace the originals with these. **These aircraft herein are released in "AS IS" Condition. Any and all issues/problems that cannot be solved via ini edits will exist forever, as new models are unlikely to be created**. Happy Landings! wrench kevin stein

Only small edits to the radar so far, it needs some bigger changes by chance...
