  1. That has to be taken in context, though. Energy production was dirt cheap in the 90s. Oil and natural gas were at rock bottom prices.

Shortly after 9/11 the prices began to rise, hitting record prices by mid-decade. As a net exporter, Russia made a killing selling that stuff. He had little control over that.

Now how much oil and gas have directly contributed to the Russian economy is not a question I can answer, but I'm sure it's more than "just a bit".

  2. "Survival Kit contents check. In them you will find: one 45 caliber automatic, two boxes of ammunition, four days concentrated emergency rations, one drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills, one miniature combination Rooshan phrase book and Bible, one hundred dollars in rubles, one hundred dollars in gold, nine packs of chewing gum, one issue of prophylactics, three lipsticks, three pair of nylon stockings -- shoot, a fellah could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.... "

    Will there be a 'big-board'? :)

FYI the original line was "weekend in Dallas" (and you can see his lips actually say Dallas, it was looped over later) but was changed as the film came out not too long after JFK's death and Dallas was apparently "unfunny" at the time.

Anyway, while I agree starting from scratch doing that would cost big bucks, maybe you have the right idea but the wrong target. TK has proven very resistant to listening to others after his experiences with publishers like Strat First and Destineer.

However, ED is now working with numerous smaller devs (Thirdwire-sized) that have focused on FS9/FSX planes to have them make planes for DCS World. Perhaps what you want to do can be accomplished to some extent, for less money, with them?

Combined Arms is already adding an RTS-type element to DCS World. There will be planes from the hardcore DCS A-10C and Ka-50 to less rivet-counting models like the F-22.

I honestly don't know how much the 3rd party people will be able to do other than add planes, terrain has been mentioned, but only ED themselves know what their plans include. As a serious potential investor you may or may not get them to talk to you (depending on how much you can invest and what their numbers look like). If ED won't talk, maybe you can invest in IRIS or one of the other 3rd parties. You wouldn't be able to affect what ED will let the 3rd parties do, but you could affect what that particular 3rd party would look to do within ED's larger framework.

Some of the other stuff you've mentioned sounds like what Mad Catz is doing based on FSX, I forget the name of it now.

  3. JM

I will buy you a copy of FC3 when it comes out.

I am not to hurt by the price of FC3. I got Lock On (2 copies) for free. I never bought FC1 or BS1. I got Lock On Platimum for $19.99 and that came with FC2. So another $39.99 is no biggie. I have bought all the DSC series and that is well over $100 now.

TK needs to a unlock the stuff because I hate to break it to him his stuff is unlocked by a few people anyway. If he chaged they code they can adapt it in minutes. So he is spinning his wheels. The SF2 series got a boost with NA, new items under the hood and new capabilities etc but even now thats gotten old. TK needs to up his game big time or tell us he is done so we can press on ourselves. I am not buying a tablet version of SF.

Geez, thanks, but I feel a bit awkward accepting something like that. I mean I want to support ED (like I said I bought Combined Arms for $30 plus bought every title of theirs at full release price aside from BS2 where I got the $20 upgrade price), but it's not like you hit the Lotto and I'm expecting my freebie.

For the record, you hit the Lotto and all CA mods are entitled to an AWESOME gift.

Oh, that goes for me if I hit the Lotto as well. With my luck, however...

  4. US presidents do their stunts before they're elected. Or rather, they do it before they FAIL to be elected, as I can recall plenty of candidates that did them but none that became president.

Dukakis' head sticking out of the tank, Kerry in the clean room bunny suit at KSC...

  5. F-19 was good, but F-117 somehow missed the mark, despite having updated graphics, more theaters, and the proper stealth model. It just felt off.

Anyway, I'd like to see it.

  6. Right, and that's what gives me pause for FC3. I've already spent $100 on LOMAC/FC1/FC2, buying all at release for full price. To make that $140? Ok, FC1 added the Su-25T and was "1.1" for LOMAC, so I was fine with that. Played a ton of it before and after getting FC1, although only A2G as the A2A missiles were just too off for me. Still, a good $30.

FC2, updated terrain (matching BS1), MP integration with BS1, but was also "1.13" for FC1. A2A missiles better, but still needed work. Another $30. I was iffy, but relented. In the event I've spent maybe 10 hrs in FC2. Shouldn't have bothered.

FC3 has no new planes, no new FMs (like FC1 added the AFM for su-25 as well as Su-25T), just lots of improvements for one plane and the missiles. And it's $40.

As I'm out of work (and as of 2 weeks ago, so is my wife!!!!!!!!!!!), I can't justify $40 for FC3. I probably would've had trouble with $30. I spent $30 for Combined Arms anyway, but I'll have to wait for a sale or employment to get FC3.

  7. If they're going to be lucky to break even on FC3, I'd say their cost structure is the problem. Compared to what other sims I've paid $40 for (Il-2 series, ROF, etc), FC3 offers significantly less when seen as the FC2 upgrade that it is. If you never bought FC1 or 2, it's a good deal, yes. For someone like me that already spent $100 on the LOMAC/FC family (buying all at release @ full price), not so much.

A lot of these things are not FC3-specific, they're going to be part of DCS World for 3rd party planes, too. So it seems like they're charging FC3 customers for things they need to put into DCSW that will make it worthwhile for the 3rd parties to make their planes. I mean, who will buy an F-14 if the missiles won't shoot down anything? Maybe DCS World shouldn't have been free to play. Maybe it should've been "Buy any DCS module or FC3 and get DCS World with it that lets you integrate with the others". After all, free DCS World w/Su-25T and no MP isn't really that big as an ad. Maybe it should've had the A-10A?

  8. I'd Use SF1 as a base to maintain MP, tear apart the DLLs, add in Specular and Bump Maps, create better shaders... I mean, DCS is still DX9 for cripes sake and looks tons better.

Yeah, that's another one I don't get. It was MONTHS before A-10C's beta release that Wags announced "DX11 (or was it 10?) is being implemented to A-10C/DCS" and IIRC he posted some screenshots. Then just a month before the beta release came the word "Oh, it won't actually make it into A-10C's release, but should come later". It was not made clear whether that meant a patch post-release, or it was being planned for what we now know as DCS World. Yet here's DCSW and STILL nothing beyond DX9. In fact, since A-10's beta release I don't remember a single WORD about DX10/11.

If TK can implement DX10 improvements to his engine, why can't ED do it for DCS?
