  1. My Swiss ancestry must have helped me with Corsair's "cryptic" quiz. frantics.gif.pagespeed.ce.IFeUW3Vimt.gif

Somewhat off-topic, but related to my Swiss ancestry: My ancestor, Jacob Staub, immigrated from the Swiss Canton of Glarus to the United States in 1856. Although one of his reasons for leaving may have been because he was tired of the continuing European and Swiss turmoil that finally culminated in the Revolution of 1848, his timing was poor, and he wound up in Knoxville, Tennessee on the eve of the U.S. civil war. The story goes that either shortly before or during the battle of Knoxville in the fall of 1863, Jacob was shot and killed by Yankee soldiers who were trying to steal--er requisition--one of his cows. His son, Thomas, later grew up to become mayor of Knoxville.

Interestingly, I have dug up some preliminary (and admittedly rather speculative) information that Jacob may not have been shot by Yankees after all--instead he may have been a victim of a Rebel sniper. Part of my theory (I don't want to bore anyone with all the details) involves the election of Thomas as mayor of Knoxville. Although the town of Knoxville was quite pro-Union during the war, it gradually became quite conservative and strongly pro-Southern after the war. My guess is that Thomas changed the story from his father being shot by a Rebel to being shot by a Yankee because it was advantageous to him politically. At this point, I don't have anything to back up my theory, but I may have opened up somewhat of a small debate inside the family at least!

As far as the quiz is concerned, would Elephant care to pose the next question? I wouldn't know where to start in finding a good question to ask. My WWI knowledge is embarrassingly limited, I'm afraid.

  2. After a little more research, I'm guessing you are referring to Marc Birkigt, Swiss auto and aircraft engine designer for Hispano-Suiza. His first aircraft engine was based on a 90hp automobile engine design and was the powerplant for the Airco DH-6. The Hispano-Suiza 8a (150hp) and 8c (220hp) went on to power the Spad VII and XIII, respectively. After the war, he went back to automobiles and produced the engines for several successful racecars.

  3. Since nobody jumped in, I propose you a quicky :

    8 -  90 - 7 - 150 - 13 - 220

Who is the man behind these numbers ? (name and explanation, please...)  you have half an hour...

My guess is the numbers refer either to:

aircraft: Sopwith Pup 90 hp, Spad VII 150hp, and Spad XIII 220hp, or more likely

    engines: perhaps Hispano-Suiza variants?

So the man behind the numbers is either a pilot who flew the above types or a designer of these aircraft engines.

    Are we getting warmer?

  4. Are you basing your data on top speed of rotary engines on the listed top speed on the aircraft information page, or on actual game performance? In OFF, I found that the listed top speed was always about 4 mph faster than the top speed as measured in the game (using the F5 key speedometer). Here are my observations on the in-game top speed (sea level) for selected rotary engine planes in OFF:

    Camel 113.5 mph
    DR1 112.5
    N11 96.25
    N16 91.5
    N17 106.0
    N24 110.75
    Pup 107.0
    Tripe 122.0

With the exception of the Tripe and perhaps the Pup, these measured top speeds, while a little too fast, aren't too far off the mark, IMO. I don't have WOFF, so I have to hope OBD tamed the Tripe somewhat--it also had the fastest measured dive speed in OFF--273 mph!!--so I hope that still isn't the case in WOFF.

  5. I propose the following compromise: Those who use Lothar's program to manage their mods or in order to play OFFbase will use the self-installer put together by Lothar. This version of my mod will not contain a version number.

For those who prefer not to use OFFbase, I will upload a version of the mod which contains a version number in the filename.

I will revise the readme file to clarify the installation instructions depending on whether you use OFFbase or not.

Now can we please return to the thread topic?

  6. It should level out the fps so you shouldn't have so much of the fps in the 60's or 70's suddenly dropping into the 20's all the time. Although you won't get as many slow downs in your fps, the top fps rate may decrease a bit, too.

BTW, sportserjim, I've just uploaded an update to my FM which should restore the turning speed to your Triplane that was a little slow in FM 3.0.

  7. I figured it is about that time to foist (love that word!) another update of my FM on the unsuspecting public, so here it is: the HPW FM and EW Campaign Mod 4.0.0 is now ready and waiting to be approved for download by the admins. This is a major update of my FM and I encourage everyone to try it out at least once. You will either be able to download and install it either as a stand-alone mod, or, using Lothar's handy self-installer, in conjunction with Lothar's OFFice and OFFbase programs.

Here are some excerpts from the readme file which explain some of the major changes to the FM in my new update:

This important update changes many FM settings on most of the aircraft currently existing in OFF. The most significant include changes to the elevator, rudder, and center of gravity (CoG) and center of lift (CoL) values in order to reduce the sluggish turn performance of several aircraft in version 3.0 of the FM mod. In addition to being more tail-heavy, most aircraft should feel more nimble and will now require a more delicate touch on the controls. As a result, while you will be able to fly much closer to the edge of an aircraft's "envelope" with this FM, you also bear the increased risk of possibly stalling and spinning your aircraft if you are not careful! This update also revises the moment of inertia (MOI) values of many aircraft in order to improve the performance of AI controlled aircraft, particularly at low altitude. Although I do not have access to and have not changed any of the AI routines, it is hoped that changes to the MOI values will result in the AI being somewhat more likely to "choose" turn, rather than climb-n-stall, tactics at low altitudes.

    Update History

    FM 4.0.0

--Major update with substantial FM revisions to many aircraft.

--Elevator values and pitch damping values modified in order to eliminate the "sluggish" turn performance of several aircraft in FM 3.0.

--Center of gravity (CoG) and center of lift (CoL) locations adjusted to give many aircraft a more tail-heavy feel. In contrast to the original OFF FM and previous versions of my FM mod, all planes (including Albatros series) will now stall and spin if not flown with care.

--Unnecessarily high positive and negative G-force settings lowered for several aircraft, particularly two-seaters.

--Rudder values adjusted on a few aircraft in order to improve rudder control and avoid excessive side-slipping.

--Adjusted empty weight and parasitic drag settings of RAF Fe2b, RAF Be2c, RAF Re8, Sopwith Pup 80 HP, and Halberstadt to eliminate crashing into trees and hills at end of runway problem.

--Moment of Inertia (MOI) values adjusted further on every aircraft in order to improve the performance of AI controlled aircraft, particularly at low altitude.

    --Numerous other changes

Please note that this update only includes updates to the FM and empty weight of campaign aircraft. While all QC aircraft get the FM update, the empty weight values are the same for both human and AI aircraft. If there is a great clamoring for an update to the Quick Battle aircraft, I will consider it, but right now I want to sit back and take a bit of a rest!

  8. .

That aeroplane would be one of the Rumpler C.VIIs that were delivered to Belgium after WWI as part of Germany's war reparations to that country.

I know, I know ... show off.

    .

    Ding, ding, ding, ding!!

Lou, you Barmy old goat! I should have excluded you from the contest as a courtesy to the other people on the board! From the Belgian website where I grabbed the pic: http://www.belgian-w...t_1910_1918.htm

In the months after the end of the First World War, Germany delivered no less than 354 aircraft to Belgium as war reparation. All of these machines were stored at Evere airfield and together with vast numbers of abandoned aircraft recuperated at former German airbases in Belgium added up to almost 700 machines. A large number of these aircraft were returned to flying condition to be test-flown by the Aviation Militaire Belge or to be used operationally. At least one Rumpler C.VII flew with the Aviation Militaire Belge and was presented between July 19th and 27th 1919 at the "Exposition des Avions de Guerre et du Matériel aéronautique" (Exhibition of Warplanes an Aeronautical Equipment).

For your prize, do you prefer Cognac or a Cuban cigar?

  9. I am pleased to announce a couple of updates to my damage model. The new version is 1.3.1 and contains the following updates to version 1.2.5:

    1.3.1

--Decreased wing-tip hit point values for the Fokker EIII.

--Slightly decreased engine hit point values for the Alb DIII early.

--Decreased engine hit point values for the Hannover CIIIa.

--Slightly increased engine hit points for the Alb DVa 200.

    1.3

--Engine threshold values adjusted again to reduce chance of engine fires and the "forever flying flamers" bug. You should see less fires than in version 1.2.5 but more than you get using Buddy1998's damage model.

--Engine hit points reduced somewhat on two-seaters and "pusher" types (DH-2 and Fee's) for better game balance.

--File structure revised in order to comply with Lothar of the Hill Peoples Offbase program and proper placement of JSGME inside the OBDSoftware game folder.

--Added HPW UltimateDM.exe self-installer program created by Lothar.

Installation is easier than ever, thanks to Lothar's automatic self-installer program. Simply download the zip file and then click on the HPW UltimateDM.exe program, which will search for your OFF and JSGME installation and install the mod to the correct location on your computer (HPW UltimateDM file is also included for those who wish to install the program manually).

Please leave any feedback about the mod or any questions you have about installation in this thread.
