  1. Albatros DI in campaign?

vonOben, the devs have made clear recently, that their announcements and previews in the past had been closely watched and then copied by the developers of another sim. For that reason, they will not release any such info. You can be sure though, that they are working on it, and that it will be released when ready. In other words - you will get the new P4 even faster than we would, if they took time off for talking about it. Seeing, how very much they worked on getting a historical accurate campaign together - something I haven't seen in any other sim to this extent - we can be very certain, that they will close the gaps of missing planes. If they do that following the importance, certain types had in the war, we may get other craft first than you or I might want to get. You may want a certain fighter, but maybe get more two-seaters - but that would then be due to the role, those types played. Some day, in the end of all development, they surely want to present to us ALL types and squadrons. Until then, just do what I do - enjoy the greatest WW1 air combat sim - until it gets even greater.
  2. Could it be "Fleury"? - still a French name, that means "flowery". Sorry, no Schuss nor Schus - nothing even near. Also no Flory or Fleury. But if we translate Fleury or Flory a little, we could use these (Flower = Blume): - Leutnant der Reserve ... Blum, Jasta 57 - (5 claims: Sopwith, 3x DH-9, Sop. Camel, RE 8 - 3 confirms: Sopwith, DH-9, Camel) - Leutnant der Reserve Fritz Blume, FAA 270, Jasta 37 - Leutnant der Reserve Walter Blume, FA 65, FEA 13, FAA 280, Jasta 26, Jasta 9 - (victories: 2x DH-4, Sop. Pup, 2x Sop. Triplane, RE 8, 12x SPAD, Breguet 14, Nieuport, S.E.5a, 2x Sop. Camel, 5x SPAD 2)
  3. Life span of a Pilot ?

bruceD, if you stay tuned with the sim and get addicted to it, your style may change after some time. In my case it took almost two years so far, still not ending. I started like Jarhead describes "having fun", I wanted immediate action and dogfights. For that, the Quick Combat is a good exercise, or, as Jarhead said, the "scrambles". But then I discovered more and more all the historical detail of the campaign, and I wanted to almost "be a pilot" in a Jasta of my choice. I discovered the varying qualities of the squadrons/Jastas, and the different opponents you get, depending were you fly. And now, almost two years later, my interest is much more, not only to survive but to bring my wingmen back alive as well. That is a real challenge, cause they can get killed very quickly, when running into an enemy ace squad. So I had to change my whole style. I'm content now with one kill per mission, and I am REALLY happy, when my wingmen are still with me after the fight. You see - there is a lot of possible development potential in this sim. Find your way, Bruce!
  4. By Any Other Name?

Some more possible Americans: Bud Wyser, Carl Cornflake, Frederick "French" Fry And some more French: Gregoire Gourmand, Pierre Passepartout, Adrien de l'Amour-Toujours
  5. Sorry, John - no Vossler in the list (only "Voss" and "Vossen"). If you have a letter that you want to know specificly, you could scan it and send me a PM of it - I can try to translate it (my reward would be, to read such an old letter, written by a German in the Civil War - a strong touch of history in that). But only if you don't think it's too private of course.
  6. Hihi - the "anti-aging cure" of OFF lies in the fact, that my pilots never get old.
  7. What do you always say - holy Schnickee?!?! Are you dressing up with that (French?) dark blue uniform, before you start OFF, Lou? What a fine piece, and well decorated with medals! Makes me think of co-starting another French campaign again - even without that blue dress.
  8. Rabu, thanks for the reminder! Since quite some time, I had planned to build my wall-mounted shelves behind the monitor a little higher, so that I could place TrackIR a bit behind the monitor. Did that today (some 12 cm / 4 - 5 inches), and the result is a great improvement! I can now lean out of my cockpit much further, or when rolling on the field, look forward left or right of the Albatros' nose, without getting stuck.
  9. Some things can make you feel not a day older than 19, Ras - and I wished I could have been there. That oil drop is an almost thrilling addition to zoom you back into the days, when those crates were made. Please release the link to Photobucket here, if possible.
  10. OFF Forum Pilots Maps

Update July 5; 2010; 11:40 h Berlin summertime (= GMT + 2) Blackadder33, England, added. All the maps are in post 1 of this thread
  11. Hell's Jester

A great work, Bullethead - the colours all look very believeable. And what the heck - maybe the Austrian monarch sent one of his best pilots to test the new fighter, before he buys it and brings it back. And the obliging Mr. Anthony Fokker himself gave order to paint that craft in the Austrian camo colours (adding sweets to the business). The Austrian ace Brumowski really flew in Flanders for some time. From Wikipedia: The next month, when Flik 41J was established on the Italian Front as Austro-Hungary’s first dedicated fighter squadron, Brumowski was chosen to command it. He spent nine days in March flying four sorties with the Germans of Jagdstaffel 24 to learn German fighter tactics, before assuming his command. While here he met the Red Baron, Manfred von Richthofen. Brumowski would later copy the baron's aircraft paint scheme for his own plane.

  13. Happy 4th of July!

Blimey, it's after midnite here! But for you guys over the pond, it must be 18 h or even less; so: I wish you a happy Independence Day (or better Independence Eve?), America!
  14. Hahaha! You Crumpets are really special at blending the old with the new! Pictures please - open & closed, Dej!
  15. Camel Caper Over London

So you're saving up for a good new rig, Slarti? Two months sounds long, but when I think about May and June rushing past me yesterday, it will be over soon. Make the best of it, and care for family, friends (barbeque) and possible roof works - soon you may not be available much for all this.
  16. Why "Happy Birthday"? Ah, you mean the Camel behind me? I shot him up alone, and then rushed through his fumes, when he pulled up.
  17. If you want "äktshönn" flying German side in summer 1917, fly with the aces von Richthofen, Bruno Loerzer, Erich Loewenhardt or Ernst Udet. There will be plenty of cannon fodder for you! It's the most perfect anti-aging cure by the way.
  18. Trees in the distance

Please send a screenshot of your "Overrides" in "Workshop". Maybe I can tell you, when I see, what I have clicked, but you haven't. Cause my scenery stretches out fine. To catch a screenshot from "Workshop", you press "Print", then close OFF, open a graphic prog like "Paint" or "Photoshop", click "New File", and when it's there, click "Insert".
  19. Camel Caper Over London

The "young guns" can never resist it - and from the saved guerdons of all the young pilots, "Old Blighty" could build another 100 Camels. A cute little movie with nice song, Lou!
  20. By Any Other Name?

Rickitycrate: German - Frank N. Stein Bullethead: All my German pilots have the surname Geschosskopf. ... ... My German pilots have ironic, fatalistic names like Massengrab, Nachgeschmack, Opfertodt, etc. Cripes, we really seem to have a sinister and fatalistic appearance in your common memories. But there were pilots with such light names like Wilhelm Sommer or Carl Holler; the latter even was an entertainer, who sang songs, accompanied by his own guitar playing. But worldwide common memory makes us still rather look like this guy: PS: the director of the movie "Frankenstein" with Boris Karloff - James Whale - tried to ban his WW1 nightmare in that mask: a British officer had been in the wasteland forward of their trenches. Returning, he got shot dead, and hung in barbed wire. They couldn't get near him to bring him back and burry him; so he stuck there dead, staring at them. From day to day, he began to look worse, and showed a very pale face with violett shaded eyes. Whale told the make-up artist, how Karloff should be looking for the movie. So, what we saw in the movie, was the face of a dead WW1 officer - although not a German one.
  21. Fascinating Story

Ha, great story! Now, no one dare to say, writers were of no use in a war! Kipling proved the opposite. After the loss of his own son, whom he pressed to get into that terrible war, with the result of loosing him, this may have been a little relief for him.
  22. Hey, Wels, nice to see you! Found this about Berthold Schilling in the "Frontflieger" website here: http://www.frontflieger.de/3-s-f.html There is a crew photograph. Schilling, Berthold (Ob.Masch.Mt.) L 59 geb. 24.03.1885 in Köblitz + 07.04.1918 Otrando Straße / Italien Das Luftschiff ging ohne Feindeinwirkung verloren und stürzte über der Otrando-Straße (östlich Italien) ins Mittelmeer. No Jasta pilots of the name Bellin, Schilling or Schnittger in the list; but there is one Schmacher: Vizefeldwebel Friedrich 'Fritz' Schumacher, Jasta 10 - 5 victories (Spad, 3x Ballon, Spad) - served March - July 1918 That match against Argentina showed again, how devastating an early goal might be. Like when the "Bismark" met the "Hood" so to say. Argetinians struggled on until the last minute, but didn't seem to find a common team play strategy. The 4. goal really hurt - it was humiliating, and Argentina must be very sad now. But "our" team is doing so great - you can't say, they just muddle through the competition, like it used to be at various other competitions. No, this team would really deserve the cup.
  23. By Any Other Name?

mighty: (presumably the Remarx brothers) What about Capt. Cal Amity? Private Pit Spitter? Lt. Dick Drillwinkle? (OMG - my brain must have evaporated - 37° is rare here!)
  24. You should be grateful, Lou - you might have drowned in work again, and then you'd threaten us with another sabbatical. But I have an idea. Perhaps you can find out, how that intermediate picture is called, that we get between "Briefing" and getting to the field/aircraft. You could offer a simple guidance for how to replace that pic with an individual flying license.
  25. FIFA World Cup

Netherlands vs Germany - a classical war (many there still hate us for the past). But this kind of war is okay for me to cheer. The "Bordeaux-Red Baron" would say: "Ze Dsherrmans vill vinn ze warr!!!" Me, personally , I'm not so sure - the Dutch are quite good!
