With "The Blue Max" and "Aces High", two good story lines were made into good movies. But I think, that it wouldn't suit our more modern and de-romanticised times, to make another movie like that. If there were ladies in towels involved, okay (I doubt there were many), but there were entertaining "side stories" which could be shown, like the story, when Udet and comrades built a huge kite, and then tied a little French girl to it and let her fly, to show her how wonderful it was. The chubby mother comes to the scene in a rage, all pilots run away except the one, who has to bring the kite back down. The lady cries, and hits him with a bag again and again, but he doesn't fail to bring kite and girl back down safe. There must be many stories like that. A scene with a lady was in Julius Buckler's memories. He and his friend, a Hauptmann, go out one evening, and get pretty drunk. Buckler is flirting with the French lady, who runs the pub. But then he falls asleep. When he wakes up, his Hauptmann is kissing with the lady, and Buckler is very upset and angry for days, until his friend gets into a nasty situation in the air, and Buckler helps him out. And all was forgotten. The best I could imagine Peter Jackson to come up with, would be a well produced series about the aces; showing their lifes and fights, their victories and deaths - as historically accurat as any possible.

Your Family Name in a German Jasta ?
Olham replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Stary, Jewish and German don't exclude each other (although the Nazis tried to force that to happen). There were times, when Jewish people lived their German lives, just like Huguenots and other minorities. And there are Jewish communities again here, at least in Berlin, where they have their most grand synagoge. If you give me the name, I can check for a pilot bearing it. Creaghorn, KuK pilots are not included. But if your name has a meaning, you could give me the German word. -

You seem to have fun, Duce! I am more with Richthofen in my fights, which may be boring to watch. He didn't use "aerobatics", but made a decided attack, in which he mostly shot his opponent up. If he failed, he would go for an advantage position again. I use "desperate maneuvers" like half loops only, when really desperate. Triplane aces can force me to try that, but very rarely does it happen. My most successful "tactic" is to damage the opponent's kite right at the beginning of a fight. After that, he is only half the match, and as good as dead. -
Timewarp! My god, Barkhorn - I have "Wings of Glory" and used to fly it back in the days when it was the latest sim! I would have thought, that it had looked much greater - I remembered it more detailed; which shows, that we fill up the gaps between the pixels with our imagination. That old cheap, but effective synthetic music also brought thememory, the feelings back - it was FUN! Thanks for posting!

Ras, the only source I know is the book "The Jasta Pilots" by Norman Franks, Frank Bailey and Rick Duiven, as Dej already said. I just recently got this book. It contains a long list of names of the Jasta pilots, and the Marine Jasta pilots. I would see through the alphabetical names lists for you, if you could send me a PM with your ancestors' names. What I can say already, is that there is no "Rasmussen" in any written form of that name in both lists. -

Lou, you seem to be even more fit on Photoshop than I should be as a graphic designer! The headover word in the stamp should be "Charlottenburg", which is a central district of Berlin city. I'll have to re-do it anyway after putting my photo in. Thanks a lot - you have done most of the work! -

On the Waterfront Whenever I want to feel free, and closer to my homeland Ostfriesland, I fly with MFJ 1. Today I was flying with the aces Leutnant zur See Voss, Flugobermaat Luitjens and Flugmeister Brenner. We had a great harvest - we sent down 5 FE2b; and returning we ran into four Nieuport 24, which we also destroyed. -

Barkhorn, the Dr.1 is perhaps easy to fly, but not at all easy to aim and hit with. And by the way, it turns better than the Camel. -

Bruce, your processor is a bit slow for this sim, I'm afraid. What you should try once, is to RAISE the setting - it is often heard here, that OFF runs more smooth with HIGHER settings. Leave terrain detail on 2 or 3, put scenery detail to 1 or 2; but push up the others. Aircraft: 5 Effects: 3 or 4 Clouds: 3 - 5 (clouds don't seem to be a problem) You can switch off "shadows" in Workshop; also set "Scenery detail" low there. -

Looks great, Lou! I love such additions to our immersion! With this idea, you got me hooked for another British Campaign carreer now. I don't have the time right now, but will later send you all required to make me one. I'll have to do a decent pilot photo. I might even add a German license, if you don't mind? Or did you intend to make one? -

Well, in it's time, when it was new, it was a good fighter! After some training, you can get used to this pusher, and I would always prefer it to the Eindecker. I even had a DH-2 campaign - until Rudolf Berthold finished my young life. He KNEW how to fly and win in the Eindecker! -

bruce, after a while, there won't be no need for E-mails telling you that someone answered - you will be unable to resist checking the forum at least three times a day! Easy British craft: early: Sopwith Pup, Sopwith Strutter mid: Sopwith Triplane, Sopwith Strutter, S.E.5a, Bristol Fighter late: S.E.5a Viper, Bristol Fighter -

George, if you search through my recent posts, there were three with video links to the Vintage Aviator Airshow. Here is the address of Part One - you'll like it! http://combatace.com/topic/56605-the-vintage-aviator-airshow-2010-in-hd-part-one/page__view__findpost__p__418917

The ways you British win your wars!

You noticed the tail sections - very good. But what I was wondering about, is that there is a Mosquito in the picture.
-
Don't even have to watch - I remember, that the aircraft in "Flyboys" were too fast all the time, and those in "The Red Baron" part of the time, too - especially in dives. One should think, it wouldn't be too hard to find advisors, who KNOW how those craft did fly. They could even only watch some of Wanaka Airshow to get the idea. Do they think, people today would not like watching any craft flying below jet speed?

Jack, would you please send me a PM with your town and country? I'll add you to our "OFF Forum Pilots Map" then (see Sticky Threads above).

Best(easiest) aircraft to begin with in OFF?
Olham replied to bruceD's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Welcome to Flanders Fields, Bruce! Easiest plane German side should be the Albatros D.II - you can get it in September 1916 with Jasta 2. You don't even have the "Coolie Hat" on your joystick, to change views with? Don't say, you are trying to fly this with mouse and keyboard? No way to survive that! You should get at least a joystick like the THRUSTMASTER T.Flight Stick X; it provides you with a coolie hat and the throttle; it also has a vertical twist axis for rudder. If you stay with flight sims in general, and particularly Over Flanders Fields, I recommend to save some money for the view system TrackIR Pro 5 by NaturalPoint. It's not cheap, but worth every penny. Please send me a PM with your town and country - I'll add you to our "OFF Forum Pilots map" then. -
Not particularly the Snipe or any other plane - the German aircraft were equal enough. No, it was just that sheer amount of resources and so much larger number of men, that stood against Germany. My map only shows the nations opposing at the Western front alone. It couldn't be won.

What I must try, is to choose an Elite Jasta or Squadron, and click on enemy skill "aces". That should (hopefully) be a bit tougher then?
